This Paper Presents a new model, called the “shear-friction truss model,” for slender reinforced concrete beams to derive a clear and simple equation for their ultimate shear strength. In this model, a portion of the shear strength is provided by shear reinforcement as in the traditional truss model, and the remainder by the shear-friction mechanism. Friction resistance is derived considering both geometrical configuration of the rough crack surface and material Properties. The inclined angle of diagonal strut in the traditional truss model is modified to satisfy the state of balanced failure, when both stirrups and longitudinal reinforcement yield simultaneously. The vertical component of friction resistance is added to the modified truss model to form the shear-friction truss model. Test results from published literatures are used to find the effective coefficient of concrete strength in resisting shear on inclined crack surfaces.

To modify some problems of ACI shear provisions, ultimate shear strength equation considering size effect and arch action to compute shear strength in high-strength concrete beams without stirrups is presented in this research. Three basic equations, namely size reduction factor, rho factor, and arch action factor, are derived from crack band model of fracture mechanics, analysis of previous some shear equations for longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and concrete strut described as linear function in deep beams. Constants of basic equations are determined using statistical analysis of previous shear testing data. To verify proposed shear equation for each variable, namely d, , ρ, f/sub c/' and aid, about 250 experimental data are used and proposed shear equation is compared with ACI 318-99 code, CEB-FIP Model code, Kim & Park's equation and Zsutty's equation. While proposed shear equation is simpler than other shear equations, it is shown to be economical predictions and reasonable safety margin. Hence proposed shear strength equation is expected to be applied to practice shear design.
In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.
A simplified method, developed from the softened strut-and-tie model, for determining the mid-span deflection of deep beams at ultimate state is proposed. The mid-span deflection and shear strength predictions of the proposed model are compared with the experimental data collected from 70 simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams, loaded with concentrated loads located at a distance a from an end reaction. The comparison shows that the proposed model can accurately predict the mid-span deflection and shear strength of deep beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios, different concrete strengths, and different horizontal and vertical hoops.

A corrugated steel plate wall (CSPW) system is advantageous to secure the strength and stiffness required for lateral force resistance because of its high out-of-plane stability. It can also stably dissipate large amounts of energy even after peak strength. In this paper, a preliminary study has been carried out to use the CSPW system in the seismic retrofit of existing reinforced concrete (RC) moment frame buildings. The seismic performance for an example building was evaluated, and then a step-by-step retrofit design procedure for the CSPW was proposed. An equivalent analytical model of the CSPW was also introduced for a practical analysis of the retrofitted building, and the strengthening effect was finally evaluated based on the results of nonlinear analysis.
The function of diaphragms at abutments and piers of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder train bridge is to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or column and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in-plane deformation. Due to large stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than designs for other structual members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from behavior of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis far the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling. Then, strut-and-tie model is applied to design the diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge. The modeling techniques in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.
In order to perform a step-by-step force-displacement response analysis or dynamic time-history analysis of large buildings with masonry infilled R/C frames, a continuous force-deformation model based on an equivalent strut approach is proposed for masonry infill panels containing openings. The model, which is applicable for degrading elements, can be implemented to replicate a wide range of monotonic force-displacement behaviour, resulting from different design and geometry, by varying the control parameters of the model. The control parameters of the proposed continuous model are determined using experimental data. The experimental program includes fifteen 1/3-scale, single-story, single-bay reinforced concrete frame specimens subjected to lateral cyclic loading. The parameters investigated include the shape, the size, the location of the opening and the infill compressive strength. The actual properties of the infill and henceforth the characteristics needed for the diagonal strut model are based on the assessment of its lateral resistance by the subtraction of the response of the bare frame from the response of the infilled frame.
The strut-and-tie method (STM) has been widely accepted and used as a rational approach for the design of disturbed regions ('D' regions) of reinforced concrete members such as in corbels and deep beams, where traditional flexure theory does not apply. This paper evaluates the applicability of the equilibrium based STM in strength predictions of deep beams (with rectangular and circular cross-section) and corbels using the available experiments in literature. STM is found to give fairly good results for corbel and deep beams. The failure modes of these deep members are also studied, and an optimum amount of distribution reinforcement is suggested to eliminate the premature diagonal splitting failure. A comparison with existing empirical and semi empirical methods also show that STM gives more reliable results. The nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) of 50 deep beams and 20 corbels could capture the complete behaviour of deep members including crack pattern, failure load and failure load accurately.
Ring beam is the main anchorage zone of the tendons in the nuclear power prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV). Its safety is crucial and has a great influence on the overall performance of PCCV. In this paper, two half-scale ring beams were tested to investigate the mechanical performance of the anchorage zone in the PCCV under multidirectional pressure. The effect of working condition with different tension sequences was investigated. Additionally, a half axisymmetric plane model of the containment was established by the finite element simulation to further predict the experimental responses and propose the local reinforcement design in the anchorage zone of the ring beam. The results showed that the ultimate load of the specimens under both working conditions was greater than the nominal ultimate tensile force. The original reinforcement design could meet the bearing capacity requirements, but there was still room for optimization. The ring beam was generally under pressure in the anchorage area, while the splitting force appeared in the under-anchor area, and the spalling force appeared in the corner area of the tooth block, which could be targeted for local strengthening design.

Since clear span-to-depth ratio is used to define what is so called a deep beam, it is an important parameter ratio for study about deep beam. Deep beams can be designed by flexure design method, and shear provided by concrete ($v_c$) and by steel ($v_s$) for deep flexure members are provided in ACI 318-99 [1]. But in later version of ACI (from ACI 318-02) it is not provided and deep beams shall be designed either by taking into account nonlinear distribution of strain or by Appendix A of Strut-and-Tie Models (STM). The trend of deep beam design seems to be familiar with strut-and-tie model, but ACI traditional design is not forgotten. By comparing these two method, there should a point which definitely explain the different between the two methods. In this study, 68 samples result of steel, after reinforcement arrangement, are taken to be analyzed.
