  • The use of prefabricated concrete piles have been gradually increased in many construction sites. One of main works for building a concrete pile foundation is to crush a part of pile head which is compressed with more than $800kg/cm^2$. A pile cutting work is usually performed by a crusher and three to four skilled workers. Recent reports on the pile cutting work reveal that a lot of cracks which significantly reduce the strength of the pile and are frequently made during pile cutting operations and it is very repetitive and labor intensive work. To improve productivity, safety, and quality of the conventional concrete pile cutting work, the research on developing an automated concrete pile cutter has been performed. In this paper, sensing methods for detecting a pile cutting line are suggested with operation process algorithms. The suggested methods are very important to develop the automated pile cutter. A pilot-type of the automated pile cutter that adopt one of the suggested sensing methods, is developed and tested in a construction site.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of the pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was 1.9 times larger than that of the steel pipe pile and similar with that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • Up to date, high-strength concrete pile which is producing in factory sells in the market. But according to the site and the construction conditions, the system to produce high-strength concrete pile directly in site is utilized in advanced country. Such the production system is the technique phenomenon very disirable in the side of quality control in site and the construction schedule, the time and the cost saving. This study is a fundamental experiment including concrete mixing design, non-autoclave curing method and the optimum condition to produce high-strengh concrete pile in site. As results of this study, High-strength concrete pile in site which target strength is 400kg/ $\textrm{cm}^2$ is able to produce it with optimum curing ciondition(75$^{\circ}C$, 9hr)and mixing design.

  • Recently, foundation designs based on piled raft concept have been increasing, where the piles are required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducer. When a concrete track is constructed on soft ground, excessive settlements may occur, while it rarely has bearing capacity problems. In this case, the settlement of the concrete track may be effectively reduced by arranging a small number of small-diameter piles beneath the track. This paper presents the effect of pile installation on the reduction of concrete track's settlement. A 3D finite difference method was employed to model the piled concrete tracks. A parametric study was carried out to assess the effect of varying soil condition and pile arrangements. From the analysis results, it is verified that the effect of the pile installation is significant to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track. Optimal number of pile rows and pile spacings was proposed for the economical design of a piled concrete track. The bearing mechanism of piles was also investigated by analyzing load sharing characteristics of pile according to soil conditions and pile arrangements.

  • With the advantages of high permeability and strength, pervious concrete piles can be suitable for ground improvement with high water content and low bearing capacity. By comparing the strength and permeability of pervious concrete with different aggregate sizes (3-5 mm and 4-6 mm) and porosities (20%, 25%, 30% and 35%), the recommended aggregate size (3-5 mm) and porosity (30%) can be achieved. The model tests of the pervious concrete piles in soft soil (silt and clay) foundations were conducted to evaluate the bearing characteristics, results show that, for the higher consolidation efficiency of the silty foundation, the bearing capacity of the silty foundation is 16% higher, and the pile-soil stress ratio is smaller. But when it is the ultimate load for the piles, they will penetrate into the underlying layer, which reduces the pile-soil stress ratios. With higher skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation, the pile penetration is smaller, so the decrease of the pile axial force can be less. For the difference in consolidation efficiency, the skin friction of pile in silt is more affected by the effective stress of soil, while the skin friction of pile in clay is more affected by the lateral stress. When the load reaches 4400 N, the skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation is about 35% higher than that of the clay foundation.

  • Composite piles have been used in ground conditions where conventional piles are unsuitable or uneconomical. They may consist of a combination of timber and concrete pile in Europe. One method of doing this was to drive a steel tube to just below water level, and a concrete pile was lowered down it and driven to the required level where corrosion was susceptible in U.K. Recently, a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pile was developed to use in many marine locations for piers and waterfront buildings in the USA(Hoy, 1995; Phair, 1997). A steel composite (SC) pile reinforced concrete spun pile with steel tube was also proposed and used for the foundation acting a high lateral earthquake load. Composite piles have been developed and researched to increase lateral resistance or to prevent corrosion in marine structures. In paper, the composite pile consisting of the steel upper portion and the concrete lower portion is proposed and are carried out several tests to confirm the capacity of the pile such as lateral load test, dynamic load tests and bending test. It is noted that the composite pile would be a economical pile being capable of increasing lateral resistance.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of the concrete pile under the horizontal loads by the model tests in laboratory. The rock ground was modeled by the concrete of about 30MPa, and a model pile was made of some mortar with the capacity of 24MPa. The diameter(D) and length(L) of a model pile was each 1200mm and 1800mm. The embedment depth into the concrete block was varied with 1.0D, 1.5D, and 2.0D in the model tests. The results of model tests showed that the lateral resistance of a pile with the embedment depth of 2.0D was more large than other cases, and the lateral displacement of yielding was similar.

  • Deep pile caps usually contain no transverse shear reinforcement and only small percentages of longitudinal reinforcement. The current design procedures including ACI 318-02 for the pile caps do not provide engineers with a clear understanding of the physical behavior of deep pile caps. In this study, the failure strengths of nine pile cap specimens tested to failure were evaluated using 3-dimensional strut-tie models. The analysis results obtained from the present study were compared with those obtained from several design methods, and the validity of the present method implementing 3-dimensional strut-tie models was examined.

  • This study evaluated the applicability of in-situ concrete pile as a stabilization materials of embankment slopes including agricultural reservoir and rural road etc. The experimental embankment slopes was constructed to investigate the strength properties of in-situ concrete pile with embankment materials and boring methods. The test variable were applied the boring method(driving and augering) and water-cement ratio. In order to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of embankment materials, permeability and water contents test were was performed. Also, the freshly and harden of in-situ concrete properties were measured by the slump and compressive strength tests. The results showed the water content and permeability of embankment materials and boring methods affected on compressive strength of in-situ concrete pile.

  • The experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of centrifugal condition on the segregated layers of materials and the compressive strength of concrete for pretensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile. The considering factors in the test were the centrifugal time and the magnitude of centrifugal force. These factors have been found to have found to have the great influence on the segregation and the concrete strength. The moderate centrifugal condition has to be fitted for the quality assurance in the production of PHC pile, especially to provide the adequate concrete cover over the tendons.
