  • PURPOSES : This paper numerically evaluates the contribution of transverse steel to the structural behavior of continuously reinforced concrete pavements to understand the role of transverse steel. METHODS : Two-lane continuously reinforced concrete pavements with and without transverse steel were analyzed through finite element analysis with the aid of commercial finite element analysis program DIANA; the difference in their structural behavior such as deflection, joint opening, and stress distribution was then evaluated. Twenty-node brick elements and three-node beam elements were used to model concrete and steel, respectively. Sub-layers were modeled with horizontal and vertical tensionless spring elements. The interactions between steel and surrounding concrete were considered by connecting their nodes with three orthogonal spring elements. Both wheel loading and environmental loading in addition to self-weight were considered. RESULTS : The use of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements does not have significant effects on the structural behavior. The surface deflections change very little with the use of transverse steel. The joint opening decreases when transverse steel is used but the reduction is quite small. The transverse concrete stress, rather, increases when transverse steel is used due to the restraint exerted by the steel but the increase is quite small as well. CONCLUSIONS : The main role of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements is supporting longitudinal steel and/or controlling unexpected longitudinal cracks rather than enhancing the structural capacity.

  • The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a substitute for natural aggregates in new concrete produces both economic and environmental advantages. Most of the RCA applications for pavements have been primarily applied to support layers for roads and airfields. This paper summarizes a work completed at the University of Illinois in partnership with the O'Hare Modernization Program to examine the effect of coarse and fine RCA on the concrete's fresh and hardened properties for airfield rigid pavement applications. Ten different RCA concrete mixtures were prepared with the incorporation of different percentages of RCA fines as well as replacement of cement with high volume percentages of supplementary cementitious materials such as Class C fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag to improve the workability and long-term properties of RCA concrete. All the mixes on this stage included 100% recycled coarse aggregates and the Two-Stage Mixing Approach was used as a mixing procedure. Based on the results obtained in the research, mixes with high percentages of recycled fine and coarse aggregates could be used for construction of airfield concrete pavements in conjunction with supplementary cementitious materials

  • PURPOSES : Analysis and design of asphalt concrete (AC) and continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) composite pavements. METHODS : In this study, the service life of the AC/CRC composite pavements was determined based on the probabilistic method in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide(MEPDG). Typical pavement design was provided with respect to heavy truck traffic volume of highways. RESULTS : The service life of the composite pavements based on IRI was shorter than that based on rutting at lower traffic volume, but this trend was switched at higher traffic volume. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the main distress affecting the service life of the composite pavements was longitudinal roughness and rutting. Roughness became lower, but rut depth became greater as the stiffness of the CRC increased.

  • Although concrete pavements were successfully widespread throughout the nation due to the desirable surface characteristics, durability, and economy, it still causes several transverse cracking and joint failure problems in some areas. In this paper, the major emphasis was given to provide a rational analytical approach on joint failure mechanisms, considering several sets of joint stiffnesses on different subgrade moduli. Besides , load transfer mechanisms on concrete pavement joints were highlighted with finite element method and computer modeling.

  • In road pavements, it is known that cement concrete pavement has superior durability, safety in compared with asphalt concrete pavement. But in reparing pavement cement concrete pavement is not usually applied because of the length of time while the road is interrupted when using Ordinary and Rapid-hardening Portland Cement. And Super High Early Strength Cement and Ultra Super High Early Strength Cement are not favorable for ready mixied concrete because of rapid setting time, high slump loss and other restrictions. We aim to develope specific cement and concrete developing 1 day strength of over 300 kg/$cm^{2}$ to open the road within one day and workable time is maintained over 1 hour that can be used as ready mixed concrete. In this study, we Produced cement using rapid-hardening cement, Hauyne clinker, anhydride gypsum and accelerator and studied on its properties. The concrete strength was over 300 kg/$cm^{2}$ at 1 day and 550 kg/$cm^{2}$ at 28 day and workable time was maintained for over 1 hour.

  • In concrete pavements with uniform tining space, the whine noise which has high frequency spectrum related to the uniform tining space exist. In this paper, randomization procedure of tining space for concrete pavements is proposed. The proposed procedure developed based on the LCG(Linear Congruential Generator) algorithm. And the factor concerned in the procedure are drag span length, number of different tining space, ratio of each tining space, total tinings of each size, sequence of actual tining.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of expedite repairing of concrete pavements using precast concrete pavement method and to investigate the effectiveness of slab connection methods. In the demonstration construction, four slabs of jointed concrete pavements were replaced with the precast slabs. First, precast concrete slabs were designed and fabricated, then existing slabs were cut and removed, and finally precast slabs were installed. The slabs were leveled and pockets, holes, and space between the slab bottom and the underlying layer were grouted. From the demonstration construction, details about the design and construction of the precast pavements for repairing of pavements were evaluated. In addition, the slab connection methods such as pocket and hole connection methods were applied in the construction and the slab curling behaviors at the joints that include those connection methods were compared. The results showed that both slab connection methods were applicable, and the hole connection method was superior.

  • Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements are more durable and have superior surface friction compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. Recent research has shown that some of the new concrete pavement textures are worthy of further examination. One of these, exposed aggregate surfaces, appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, we considered the relationship between noise level and various textures of exposed aggregate concrete (EAC) pavement by tire impact noise measurement. As the results of that, it was suggested that optimum surface texture and manufacturing condition of EAC in order to reduce tire and pavement interaction noise. Conclusively, we would like to recommend optimum condition of EAC pavement at the respects of materials and treatment. Furthermore, Frequency spectrum as well as A-weighted noise level was also evaluated to analyze properties of noise between PCC and EAC.
