  • In this paper, a Raman spectrometer is designed to detect chemicals contaminating the ground. The system is based on Raman spectroscopy, which is spectral analysis of scattered light from chemicals, induced by a laser. The system consists of a transmitting-optics module with a laser to induce Raman-scattered light from the sample, a receiving-optics module to collect the scattered light, and a spectrograph to separate the collected light into a wavelength spectrum. The telescope, a part of the receiving-optics module, is designed to produce a focal spot in the same position for variable measurement distances using the code V simulator, considering the distance change between the system and the road. The Raman spectra of 12 chemicals on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were measured. Intensity differences between the Raman spectra acquired on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were observed, but the characteristics of the spectra according to the chemicals on them were similar. Additionally, the Raman spectrum of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) was measured at various distances. The measured and simulated optical throughputs were similar. In conclusion, it is confirmed that with this system the Raman spectrum can be measured, irrespective of the distance change.

  • When constructing LNG storage structures using the cast-in-place method in extreme areas, the construction cost and time may be increased due to the poor working environments and conditions. Therefore, demand for modular energy storage tanks is increasing. In this study, we propose using an SCP module as an alternative for lighter-weight LNG storage tanks. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of LNG storage outer tanks by performing bending tests on the thickness of composite steel plate concrete under field conditions. The loads on specimens with thicknesses of 100 mm and 200 mm were linearly increased to the design final loads of 413 kN and 822 kN, respectively. The slope was rapidly changed, and fracture occurred. The two test conditions showed linear behavior until the steel plate yielded, and after an extreme load behavior, sudden yielding of the steel plate yield occurred in the SCP bending test according to the INCA guidelines. The results satisfied the design flexural load and showed the possibility of using the specimens in a modular LNG outer tank. However, it is necessary to evaluate the structural performance of the SCP by performing compression and shear tests in future research.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Mario Botta's residential design. The characteristics of Mario Botta's residential design are following as : 1. The residential design of Mario Botta planed from 1960' to 1970's is based on the style composition method of modern design, specially by the influence of Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. Botta's residential design of the 1980's is generally affected by A. Palladio, and is characterized as the representation of classic standard. The residential design of the 1980's shows the establishment level of Mario Botta's residential design, and produces particular Botta's facade. 2. The characteristics of Mario Botta's spatial composition on residential design could be implicated by the spatial distribution of each floor which is divided by three floors, simple and primitive volume which has a symmetry, opening through the massive elimination n the center of front, double skin, the contrast between void and solid, and the inflow of light through the top-light. 3. Most Botta's residential designs have Loggia in the center of facade working as a buffer space which joins outside and inside space together. They also lead the spatial continuous flow. The inside space is combined by the light coming through top-light and vertical opening. 4. They have high accomplishment in complicating details. They show the outside design of a horizontal belt according to the module of concrete block and the decorated design using compositional materials such as an unevenness piled up askew concrete block .

  • Modular construction is an emerging technology to accommodate the increasing restrictions in terms of construction period, energy efficiency and environmental impacts, since each structural module is prefabricated offsite beforehand and assembled onsite using industrialized techniques. However, some innate structural drawbacks of this innovative method are also distinct, such as connection tying inaccessibility, column instability and system robustness. This study aims to explore the theoretical and numerical stability analysis of a tenon-connected square hollow section (SHS) steel column to address the tying and stability issue in modular construction. Due to the excellent performance of composite structures in fire resistance and buckling prevention, concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are also taken into account in the analysis to evaluate the feasibility of adopting composite sections in modular buildings. Characteristic equations with three variables, i.e., the length ratio, the bending stiffness ratio and the rotational stiffness ratio, are generated from the fourth-order governing differential equations. The rotational stiffness ratio is recognized as the most significant factor, with interval analysis conducted for its mechanical significance and domain. Numerical analysis using ABAQUS is conducted for validation of characteristic equations. Recommendations and instructions in predicting the buckling performance of both SHS and CFST columns are then proposed.

  • In the present study, the cavity module of the MELCOR code is used for the simulation of molten corium concrete interaction (MCCI) during the late phase of postulated large break loss of coolant (LB-LOCA) accident in the APR1400 reactor design. Using the molten corium composition data from previous MELCOR Simulation of APR1400 under LB-LOCA accident, the ex-vessel phases of the accident sequences with long-term MCCI are recalculated with stand-alone cavity package of the MELCOR code to investigate the impact of water ingression and melt eruption models which were hitherto absent in MELCOR code. Significant changes in the MCCI behaviors in terms of the heat transfer rates, amount of gases released, and maximum cavity ablation depths are observed and reported in this study. Most especially, the incorporation of these models in the new release of MELCOR code has led to the reduction of the maximum ablation depth in radial and axial directions by ~38% and ~32%, respectively. These impacts are substantial enough to change the conclusions earlier reached by researchers who had used the older versions of the MELCOR code for their studies. and it could also impact the estimated cost of the severe accident mitigation system in the APR1400 reactor.

  • Currently, the Off-Site Construction (OSC) construction method, which emphasizes the minimization of field work, is being emphasized at construction sites due to the lack of construction skilled manpower, extreme weather, and the Severe Disaster Punishment Act. In this study, we developed a stacked PC modular, which is a method of stacking PC modules, and solved the lifting problem by reducing the weight of the unit module, which is emerging as the biggest disadvantage of PC modules, to around 20 tons. For the connection between modules, structural safety was secured through repeated history tests of the wall and slab connection. Walls and slabs satisfied all statutory fire resistance times through fire resistance tests, and residential performance was evaluated to be satisfactory through mock-up demonstration. The developed PC modular has been applied to the construction of commercial houses, detached houses, shopping malls, churches, etc., and has design results for many buildings such as dormitories, detached houses with 4 floors or more, and resorts, so it is expected that an atmosphere of revitalization of construction methods will be created.

  • Ubiquitous is an information communication environment which peoples could connect on network without being conscious of the network and computer condition at anytime and anywhere. Presently, advanced technology, digital cities and eco-friendly cities using Ubiquitous technology are being focused through out the world. As recent information industry and communication technology have developed remarkably, studies on intelligent structures and structural maintenance methods by combining a general idea of connecting all objects on network by interpolating computers which is called Ubiquitous Computing, and USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) are being attempted. In this paper, a basic experiment on penetration of RF(Radio Frequency) sensor nodes using an experimental sample setting concrete and reinforcing bar as variables is studied to estimate the possibility of applying wireless sensor networks in structures. The spring of reinforcing bars, concrete thickness, intensity of radio frequency were set up as variables, transmitting and receiving distance were checked vertically and horizontally. Moreover, Spectrum Analyzer was used for checking the magnitude of the frequency used in order to measure the reduction of radio wave exactly. The radio wave reduction was numerically analyzed, and the influence of the wavelength was analysed as well. As a result, the penetration depth in concrete without reinforcing bars was 45cm, and in reinforced concretes which reinforcing bars placed at spacing of 5cm and 15cm, the penetration depth were 37cm and 45cm each. No influence on radio wave penetration depth were found when the spacing of reinforcing bars in the reinforced concrete structures becomes over 15cm.

  • The thermal characteristics of concrete fabricated with blast furnace slag were investigated in this paper. Test parameters included water-binder ratio and the content of furnace slag. Experimental program were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength and split tensile strength under high-temperature thermal cycling, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. Test results showed that the residual compressive strength of mixtures with blast furnace slag was greater than that of mixture without blast furnace slag. In addition, thermal conductivity of mixtures with blast furnace slag was greater than that of mixtures without blast furnace slag. It indicates that blast furnace slag was favorable for charging and discharging in thermal energy storage system. Test results of this study would be used to design concrete module system of thermal energy storage.

  • In recent years, the reversed L-shaped perforated shear connector has been developed to mitigate the problem associated with headed stud and Perforbond shear connector and to simulate the simultaneous failure of concrete and shear connector. And FRP perforated shear connector has been applied to composite concrete and FRP module in the FRP-concrete composite bridge deck. The design criterion of the reversed L-shaped and FRP perforated shear connector has not been established yet since the lack of experimental and analytical study results. In this paper, the existing design equations for the Perforated were briefly discussed and the equation fur the prediction of shear resisting capacity of the reversed L-shaped and FRP perforated shear connector was suggested based on the experimental test, FEM analysis. and the existing equation for the Perfobond. The predict results obtained by the suggested equation arc compared with the experimental results, the applicability and effectiveness of suggested equation was verified.

  • In this study, specimens were made with profile thicknesses and shear reinforcement as parameters. The bending and shear behavior were checked, and comparative analysis was conducted of the results and the theoretical values in order to see the applicability of T-section Modular Composite Profiled Beams (TMPB). In TMPB, the profiles of formwork functions play a structural role resisting the load. Also, the module concept, which is introduced into TMPB, has advantages: it can be mass-produced in a factory, it is lighter than an existing H-beam, it can be fabricated on the spot, and its section size is freely adjustable. The T1 specimens exhibited ductile behavior, where the whole section displayed strain corresponding to yielding strain at least without separation between modules. They also exhibited maximum strength similar to the theoretical values even if shear reinforcement was not applied, due to the marginal difference between shear strength and maximum bending monment of the concrete section. A slip between modules was incurred by shear failure of the bolts in all specimens, excluding the T1 specimen, and therefore bending moment could not be fully displayed.
