  • The purpose of this study was to examine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP strips. A total of 12 rectangular beams were tested. Test variables in this study were the shapes, bonded length and the number of longitudinal layers of CFRP strips. From the experimental study, flexural capacity of the beams strengthened with CFRP strips significantly increased compared to the reinforced concrete beam without a CFRP strip. Maximum increase of ultimate strength was found about 120% more than the control beam. In this test, most of the strengthened beams failed suddenly due to the debonding of CFRP strips. It is also observed that the debonding of the strip was initiated in the flexural zone of the beam and propagated rapidly to the end of the beam. The ultimate tensile strains of CFRP strips in this test were occurred at the level of 36% of rupture tensile strength of the CFRP strip, and an analytical approach to compute the flexural strength of reinforced beams strengthened with CFRP strips based on the effective stresses was conducted.

  • Researches and studies which have been conducted so far on external confinement of long span concrete columns have mainly concentrated on concentric loading. But, long span bridge concrete columns over the sea are mainly subjected to concentrated axial load, and at the same time lange amount of moment by eccentric load. This paper experimentally investigates the performance of externally confined high-strength concrete columns subjected to loading mechanism and evaluates the effectiveness of two confinement materials carbon fibre and high performance glass fibre. Twelve short columns with the same dimensions were cast and tested Six columns were reinforced with hoop bars, the remaining six columns were reinforced with spiral bars and wrapped with three layers of carbon failure and high performance glass FRP sheets. Test variables considered were the shape of internal reinforcement and strengthening materials according to loading location. The experimental results showed that eccentric load could obviously lower down the maximum failure load of FRP-confined concrete columns, compared with the columns under concentric load. And compared with the carbon FRP-confined reinforced concrete columns, high performance glass FRP-confined columns displayed a higher load capacity and ductility, when tested both concentrically and eccentrically.

  • Layered Double Hydroxides is known as a hydrotalcite-like material. It is a type of anionic clay with planar structure. It is composed of layer structure which is able to exchange anion between two layers which includes divalent ion and trivalent ion. Therefore, layered double hydroxide is applicable for eliminating harmful heavy metals and anionic substances which exist in the concrete. Because it is also able to be used as catalyst and has high possibility of utilization, It is getting an large amount of attention recently. In this study, an analysis on the structure of the layerd double hydroxide (LDH) which is possible to bind the anion was carried out.

  • This paper deals with the analysis for column shortening of RC frame structure considering the construction sequences. The time-dependent effects of concrete are taken into consideration in this study to simulate the actual structural behavior. The stiffness matrix of a beam element is derived on the bases of the layer approach, dividing a section with imaginary layers. Creep and shrinkage strains at each layer are calculated by using the first-order algorithm based on the expansion of creep compliance. Finally, the correlation studies with the purpose of analyzing the time-dependent behavior of building structure are conducted using the analytical model proposed in this study.

  • When seismic isolation system is applied to high aspect-ratio (height/wide-ratio) steel structures, there are several problems to be taken into consideration. One is lifting up tensile force on the isolation bearing by overturning moment caused by earthquake. Another is securing building stiffness to produce seismic isolation effects. Under these conditions, this paper reports the structural design of high-rise research building in the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology. With the stepping-up system for the corner bearings, the narrow sides of single span framework are designed to concentrate the dead load as counter-weight for the tensile reaction under earthquake. Also we adopted concrete in-filled steel column and Mega-Bracing system covering four layers on north & south framework to secure the horizontal stiffness of the building.

  • Deep Convolution neural network (DCNN) has been widely used in the healthy maintenance of civil infrastructure. Using DCNN to improve crack detection performance has attracted many researchers' attention. In this paper, a light-weight spatial attention network module is proposed to strengthen the representation capability of ResNet and improve the crack detection performance. It utilizes attention mechanism to strengthen the interested objects in global receptive field of ResNet convolution layers. Global average spatial information over all channels are used to construct an attention scalar. The scalar is combined with adaptive weighted sigmoid function to activate the output of each channel's feature maps. Salient objects in feature maps are refined by the attention scalar. The proposed spatial attention module is stacked in ResNet50 to detect crack. Experiments results show that the proposed module can got significant performance improvement in crack detection.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation on the contribution of RCC strip in the in-filled RC frames. In this research, two frames were tested to study the behavior of retrofitted RC frame under cyclic loading. In the two frame, one was three bay four storey R.C frame with central bay brick infill with RCC strip in-between brick layers and the other was retrofitted frame with same stiffened brick work. Effective rehabilitation is required some times to strengthened the RC frames. Ferrocement concrete strengthening was used to retrofit the frame after the frame was partially collapsed. The main effects of the frames were investigated in terms of displacement, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Diagonal cracks in the infill bays were entirely eliminated by introducing two monolithic RCC strips. Thus more stability of the frame was obtained by providing RCC strips in the infill bays. Load carrying capacity of the frame was increased by enlarging the section in the retrofitted area.

  • This paper presents experimental studies aiming at evaluation of structural behaviors of RC (Reinforced Concrete) beams externally strengthened with taper ended CFRPs(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers). Experiments are performed with RC beams having different numbers of CFRP layers and length of each layer. The beams are subjected to four point-bending with simply supported condition. Test results of taper ended CFRPs and non-tapered CFRPs are compared and the better strengthening effect is observed from tapered ended CFRPs.

  • The entire nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete frames up to collapse, is analyzed by the displacement control method and the combined layered and nonlayered method. All of the rigidities of section are calculated approximately by a sum over all the layers for the layered method, are used the integral values over the cross section area for the nonlayered method. The spurious sensitivity to the chosen element size in the result of analysis by finite element method for the materials with strain-softening can be overcome by modifying the strain distribution based on the concept of fracture energy at plastic hinge considering the applied axial load.

  • The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. As ship collision protection, artificial island with concrete block quay wall is planned. The risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are introduced to consider the ship collision effects. In the Gwangyang bay area, there are some different sedimental conditions in clayey stratums. For a desirable design, we classify into four zones and 2 layers in each zone, and then determine suitable soil properties considering these zones. As a ground improvement under artificial island, DCM and SCP methods are Planned.
