Anchored blind bolted composite connection to a concrete filled steel tubular column

  • A new type of moment-resisting bolted connection was developed for use in composite steel- concrete construction to connect composite open section steel beams to concrete filled steel square tubular columns. The connection was made possible using anchored blind bolts along with two through bolts. It was designed to act compositely with the in-situ reinforced concrete slab to achieve an enhanced stiffness and strength. The developed connection was incorporated in the design of a medium rise (five storey) commercial building which was located in low to medium seismicity regions. The lateral load resisting system for the design building consisted of moment resisting frames in two directions. A major full scale test on a sub-assembly of a perimeter moment-resisting frame of the model building was conducted to study the system behaviour incorporating the proposed connection. The behaviour of the proposed connection and its interaction with the floor slab under cyclic loading representing the earthquake events with return periods of 500 years and 2500 years was investigated. The proposed connection was categorized as semi rigid for unbraced frames based on the classification method presented in Eurocode 3. Furthermore, the proposed connection, composite with the floor slab, successfully provided adequate lateral load resistance for the model building.

Nonlinear analysis on concrete-filled rectangular tubular composite columns

  • A 3D nonlinear finite element computation model is presented in order to analyze the concrete filled rectangular tubular (CFRT) composite structures. The concrete material model is based on a hypo-elastic orthotropic approach while the elasto-plastic hardening model is employed for steel element. The comparisons between experimental and analytical results show that the proposed model is a relatively simple and effective one. The analytical results show that the capacity of inner concrete of CFRT column mainly depends on the two diagonal zones, and the confining effect of CFRT section is mainly concentrated on the corner zones. At the ultimate state, the side concrete along the section cracks seriously, and the corner concrete softens with the increase of compressive strains until failure.

  • 강관에 콘크리트를 충전하는 경우, 콘크리트 충전강관 기둥은 뛰어난 내력과 변형성능을 발휘한다. 그리고 콘크리트의 축열효과에 의해서 일정시간은 내화피복 없이도 내력을 유지할 수 있다. 화재발생동안 콘크리트 충전강관 기둥의 거동을 알아보고자 강관과 콘크리트의 온도에 따른 특성치 변화를 가정하고 온도 해석 및 축력-모멘트관계에 대한 수치해석을 수행하여 시간변화에 따른 변수별로 비교평가하였다. 온도에 따른 특성치는 기존문헌의 데이터를 이용하였으며 온도해석은 범용 해석프로그램인 ANSYS로 유한요소해석을 하였고 이를 바탕으로 내력에 대한 수치해석을 수행하였다.

Confining effect of concrete in double-skinned composite tubular columns

  • A double-skinned composite tubular (DSCT) column, which consists of concrete and inner and outer tubes, was finally developed to overcome the weaknesses of concrete filled tube columns by reducing the self-weight of the column and confining the concrete triaxially. Research pertaining to the stiffness and strength of the column and the confining effect in a DSCT column has been carried out. However, detailed studies on the confining stress, especially the internal confining stress in a DSCT column, have not been carried out. Internal and external confining stresses should be evaluated to determine the effective confining stress in a DSCT column. In this paper, the confining stresses of concrete before and after insertion of an inner tube were studied using finite element analysis. The relationship between the internal or external confining stresses and the theoretical confining stress was investigated by parametric studies. New modified formulae for the yield and buckling failure conditions based on the formulae suggested by former researchers were proposed. Through analytical studies, the modified formulae were verified to be effective for economic and reasonable design of the inner tubes in a DSCT column under the same confining stress.

Tests and numerical behavior of circular concrete-filled double skin steel tubular stub columns under eccentric loads

  • This article describes experimental and numerical analyses of eccentrically loaded over the axially loaded circular concrete filled double-skinned steel tubular (CFDST) short columns. Tests on circular CFDST short columns under eccentric and concentric loading were conducted to assess their responses to the frequent intensity of 5-30 mm at the interval of each 5 mm eccentric loading conditions with constant cross-sectional proportions and width-to-thickness ratios of the outside and internal tubes. The non-linear finite-element analysis of circular CFDST short columns of eccentrically loaded over the axially loaded was performed using the ABAQUS to predict the structural behavior and compare the concentric loading capacity over the various eccentric loading conditions. The comparison outcomes show that the axial compressive strength of the circular CDFST short columns was 2.38-32.86%, lesser than the concentrically loaded short column with the inner circular section. Also, the influence of computer simulation employed is more efficient in forecasting the experimentally examined performance of circular CFDST stub columns.

Experimental study on behavior of tri-directional prestressed composite bridge column under low cyclic loading

  • To improve the seismic behavior of composite column with high strength concrete-filled steel tubular in bridge engineering, four column specimens, including one specimen with vertical prestressing force and three specimens with tri-directional prestressing force, were conducted under low cyclic loading. Test parameters including axial compression ratio, degree of vertical prestressing and existence of prestressed steel strips were emphatically analyzed. Experimental results revealed that applying tri-directional prestressing force to column with high strength concrete-filled steel tubular produced more beneficial behavior in terms of ductility, energy-dissipation and self-centering capacity over that of specimens only with vertical prestress. Moreover, ultimate bearing capacity of composite column was improved with increase of degree of vertical prestress and external axial force, while ductility would be reduced. External axial force showed slight influence on the self-centering behavior. Finally, a calculation equation for predicting the shear capacity of the tri-directional prestressed composite column was proposed and the accuracy of the calculated results validated by experimental data.

Initial stiffness and moment capacity assessment of stainless steel composite bolted joints with concrete-filled circular tubular columns

  • This paper numerically assesses the initial stiffness and moment capacity of stainless steel composite bolted joints with concrete-filled circular tubular (CFCT) columns. By comparing with existing design codes including EN 1993-1-8 and AS/NZS 2327, a modified component method was proposed to better predict the flexural performance of joints involving circular columns and curved endplates. The modification was verified with independent experimental results. A wide range of finite element models were then developed to investigate the elastic deformations of column face in bending which contribute to the corresponding stiffness coefficient. A new design formula defining the stiffness coefficient of circular column face in bending was proposed through regression analysis. Results suggest that a factor for the stiffness coefficient of endplate in bending should be reduced to 0.68, and more contribution of prying forces needs to be considered. The modified component method and proposed formula are able to estimate the structural behaviour with reasonable accuracy. They are expected to be incorporated into the current design provisions as supplementary for beam-to-CFCT column joints.

강관 보강형 충전 각형강관 기둥-보 플랜지 접합부의 인장거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (Tensile Behavior of Concrete-Filled Square Steel Tubular Column-Beam Flange Connections with Stiffeners)

  • 본 연구는 콘크리트충전 각형강관을 이용한 기둥-H형 보 접합부에 있어서 시공성과 충전성을 고려하여 강관 기둥을 외부에서 보강한 충전 각형강관 기둥-H형강보접합부를 개발하고자 하며 이러한 접합방식 개발을 위한 기초적 연구로 보의 인장플랜지와 강관기둥 접합부의 인장거동을 실험적으로 관찰하여 제시한 접합부의 내력 및 변형 특성을 파악한다. 시험체의 변수는 각형강관 기둥의 보강 두께(T=9, 18, 27mm)와 높이(H=50, 80mm)로 계획하여 총 4개의 시험체를 제작하였다. 접합부의 항복내력의 평가로 항복선 이론을 적용한 기존의 연구를 수정하여 실험치와 비교한 결과 비교적 좋은 대응을 나타냈다. 본 연구의 접합방식은 외부에서 강관 기둥을 보강하는 간단한 방법으로 보붕괴형의 강접합을 얻을 수 있으며, 콘크리트 충전성을 확보할 수 있어 시공성에 있어서 장점으로 인정된다. 강관기둥의 두께가 8mm 인 것을 고려하면 실제 구조물의 설계에 적용할 수 있는 가능성이 있는 것으로 판단되며, 구체적인 설계방법을 위해서는 추치해석적인 방법에 의한 연구와 보완적인 실험이 필요한 것으로 생각된다.

반복하중을 받는 콘크리트충전 각형강관 보-기둥의 거동 (Behavior of Concrete-Filled Square Tubular Beam-Column under Cyclic Load)

  • 본 연구는 콘크리트충전 각형강관(CFT) 기둥의 강도와 변형능력의 평가 및 내진성능에 대한 기초 자료의 제시를 목적으로 한다. 실험체는 초고층 건물의 최하단기둥의 응력분포를 가정하여 켄틸레버형 기둥으로 하고, 총 18개의 실험체가 일정 축력과 반복 횡하중 하에서 실험되었다. 본 실험에 적용된 주요변수는 강관의 폭/두께 비, 세장비 (LO/D), 그리고 축력비이다. 각 변수가 기둥의 강도, 변형능력, 그리고 에너지 흡수능력에 미치는 영향이 기술되었고, 각국 규준식과 실험결과를 비교하였다. 분석결과, 피복형 한국강구조학회 규준은 합성 단면적과 탄성계수를 AIJ와 AISC-LRFD 수준으로 수정한다면, 충전형에도 적용가능 할 것으로 판단된다. 마지막으로, 구속효과를 고려하여 단면의 소성해석을 통하여 구한 B. Kato의 CFT 기둥의 휨내력 제안식은 실험결과와 좋은 대응을 나타내고 있다.

  • 본 논문은 중심축하중을 받는 콘크리트충전 각형강관 단주의 거동에 관한 연구이다. 총 11개의 실험체가 실험되었고, 실험의 변수는 강관의 폭/두께비와 강재의 항복 응력도에 대한 콘크리트의 압축강도비(응력도비)이다. 폭/두께비의 범위는 20.22에서 91.75이고 응력도비는 0.068에서 0.0955이다. 본 실험의 변수범위를 초과하는 기존의 실험결과를 수집하고 변수의 범위를 확장하여, 각각의 변수가 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 또한, Hajjar가 제안한 다항식의 모델을 수정하여 콘크리트충전 각형강관 단주의 내력식을 제안하였고.
