  • Since the concrete covers most structures in modern architecture and it is composed of aggregates of about 75%, the appropriate selection of aggregates is valuable for the durability of concrete. A major cause of the expansion of mortar-bar measured by ASTM C 227-90 has been accounted by the alkali-aggregate reaction. This study carried out designed experiments on some aggregates including basalt and sandstone, to classify the expansion factors into the alkali-aggregate reaction, the increase of the gel pore volume, and the interstitial water that could expand physically the cracks or foliation developed in aggregates itself. The quantitative analyses of expansion by each factor indicated that the interstitial water and/or the alkali-aggregate reaction had major roles in the concrete expansion. Thus, if the supplied aggregates have deteriorated the structural framework, it is important to investigate the exact causes through this suggested method.

  • Our ability to predict hydration behavior is becoming increasingly relevant to the concrete community as modelers begin to link material performance to the dynamics of material properties and chemistry. At early ages, the properties of concrete are changing rapidly due to chemical transformations that affect mechanical, thermal and transport responses of the composite. At later ages, the resulting, nano-, micro-, meso- and macroscopic structure generated by hydration will control the life-cycle performance of the material in the field. Ultimately, creep, shrinkage, chemical and physical durability, and all manner of mechanical response are linked to hydration. As a way to enable the modeling community to better understand hydration, a review of hydration models is presented offering insights into their mathematical origins and relationships one-to-the-other. The quest for a universal model begins in the 1920's and continues to the present, and is marked by a number of critical milestones. Unfortunately, the origins and physical interpretation of many of the most commonly used models have been lost in their overuse and the trail of citations that vaguely lead to the original manuscripts. To help restore some organization, models were sorted into four categories based primarily on their mathematical and theoretical basis: (1) mass continuity-based, (2) nucleation-based, (3) particle ensembles, and (4) complex multi-physical and simulation environments. This review provides a concise catalogue of models and in most cases enough detail to derive their mathematical form. Furthermore, classes of models are unified by linking them to their theoretical origins, thereby making their derivations and physical interpretations more transparent. Models are also used to fit experimental data so that their characteristics and ability to predict hydration calorimetry curves can be compared. A sort of evolutionary tree showing the progression of models is given along with some insights into the nature of future work yet needed to develop the next generation of cement hydration models.

  • Prefabrication technologies are making bridge construction safer and less disruptive to the environment and traveling public, making bridge designs more constructible and, improving the quality and durability by shifting site work to a more controllable environment. Modular bridge substructures with concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) piers and composite pier caps were suggested to realize accelerated bridge construction. The precast segmental pier cap consists of a composite pier table and precast prestressed segments on the table. The pier table has embedded steel section to mitigate stress concentration at the connection by small tubes. Each bridge pier has four or six CFT columns which connect to the pier cap. Shear strength of the pier cap was obtained by extending vertical reinforcing bars from the table to the precast segment. Transverse prestressing was introduced to control tensile stresses by service loadings. Structural performance of the proposed modular system was evaluated by static tests. Design requirements of the composite pier cap were satisfied by continuous reinforcing bars and prestressing tendons. Standardized modular substructures can be effectively utilized for the fast replacement or construction of bridges.

  • Carbonation resistance is one of the most influencing factors on durability of concrete. Alkali activated slag (AAS) is known to have weaker resistance for carbonation than OPC due to the low calcium contents. In this paper, the carbonation characteristic of AAS mortar which is related to the basicity (CaO/$SiO_2$) was investigated. In order to give the various basicity conditions, SM (source material) was blended with quicklime (CaO) and silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) by adopting mechano-chemical treatment method. Experiments including flow test, compressive strength test, carbonation depth test, together with XRD, FTIR and TGA were employed to evaluate the effects of basicity of SM on the carbonation characteristics. The test results showed that the carbonation resistance effectively increased with the increase of the basicity of SM.

  • The Crack, occurred in the concrete structure, is a major cause of function deterioration such as strength, durability and waterproof. Therefore the need for crack reduction will continue as long as there is concrete structure. But, it is not easy to reduce or prevent crack cause of impact factor of it. There are so many factors of crack such as material, construction and maintenance environment, and structure, and these are acting in combination. So, this study derives a correlation between the cracks and members through reviewing member crack occurred. And member's attribute, related crack, is analyzed by it. It consider that the basic attribute of member is similar when its requirements are similar. Through this study, therefore, foundation of countermeasure of crack will be provided by prediction of crack shape through member's attribute.

  • The new asphalt surface reinforcement method (ASRM) is one of the preventive maintenance methods in asphalt concrete pavements. The adhesion performance of new ASRM satisfied the standard of non-slip pavement and bridge waterproofing materials. As a results of durability tests (as wheel load, rolling bottle and UV resistance test), the new ASRM showed sufficient resistance to traffic and environmental loads. The waterproof and chemical resistance tests of new ASRM were conducted to evaluate whether the pavement could be protected from water and chemicals and the performances of new ASRM were satisfactory. Furthermore, the new ASRM demonstrated some rejuvenation effects due to its toughness increases in recycled asphalt concrete mixture by 5% compared to the conventional hot mix asphalt mixture using reclaimed asphalt pavement. In conclusion, the new ASRM was evaluated to protect the asphalt concrete pavement and increase the lifetime.

  • In the construction industry, due to the cost rise of raw material for concrete, we have looked into recycling by-products which came from foundry. When using the Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag(SG), it is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat, increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems : construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, therefore, to enhance the early strength of SG mortar, we used some alkali activators(KOH, NaOH, $Na_2CO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$, water glass, $Ca(OH)_2$, alum. This paper deals with reacted products, setting time, heat evolution rate, flow and the strength development of SG cement mortar activated by alkali activators. From the results, if alkali activators were selected and added properly, SG is good for using as the materials of mortar and concrete.

  • Carbon nanotube(CNT) is one of the promising construction materials to produce concrete with high strength and durability by adding in the concrete mixtures from various researches. Also, its superior heat conductivity can be one of the options to develop self-heating concrete. In this research, the fundamental study was conducted to investigate mechanical properties and microstructures of cement pastes and mortars by strength tests and porosity measurement with several CNT additions, which were 0 wt%, 0.115 wt%, 0.23 wt% and 0.46 wt% of CNT-cement ratio. Compressive and flexural strength test were conducted at 3, 7 and 28 days, and pore characteristics were investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry. SEM-EDS and Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) were conducted to prove the hydration product types and CNT dispersion in the cement matrix. As a result, even though high amount of CNT additions were caused worse performance, mixtures with 0.115 wt% of CNTs developed the similar performance with plain mixture.

  • The introduction of advanced water treatment facilities has increased as the conventional purification method cannot remove the substance clearly. However, the internal waterproofing and Anticorrosion materials of the advanced water treatment facility using ozone deteriorate due to the oxidation power of ozone and affects the concrete, which causes a decrease in durability. This study is to evaluate the ozone resistance according to the type of spray metal and the surface treatment method of the coating, and the bond strength after ozone treatment in order to develope a finishing method to prevent deterioration of concrete structure of water treatment facility using metal spraying method as a way to construct metal panel with excellent ozone resistance and chemical resistance by an easier way than the previous. The Experimental results show that spray metal Ti has superior ozone resistance even after spraying. It is considered to be the most suitable method for ozone resistance and bond performance by finishing using Teflon sealing as surface treatment method.
