  • This paper aims to improve the current state-of-the-art in long-term deflection prediction in steel-concrete composite beams. The efficiency of a time-dependent finite element model based on linear creep theory is verified with available experimental data. A parametric numerical study is then carried out, which focuses on the effects of concrete creep and/or shrinkage, ultimate shrinkage strain and reinforcing bars in the slab. The study shows that the long-term deformations in composite beams are dominated by concrete shrinkage and that a higher area of reinforcing bars leads to lower long-term deformations and steel stresses. The AISC model appears to overestimate the shrinkage-induced deflection. A modified ACI equation is proposed to quantify time-dependent deflections in composite beams. In particular, a modified reduction factor reflecting the influence of reinforcing bars and a coefficient reflecting the influence of ultimate shrinkage are introduced in the proposed equation. The long-term deflections predicted by this equation and the results of extensive numerical analyses are found to be in good agreement.

  • Reinforced concrete floors constructed between movement restraints often crack seriously due to shrinkage after completion. One common mitigation measure is to construct the concrete floors in stages to allow part of the shrinkage movement to take place before completion. However, shrinkage movement analysis of concrete floors constructed in stages is quite cumbersome, as the structural configuration changes during construction, thus necessitating reanalysis of the partially completed structure at each stage. Herein, a finite element method for shrinkage movement analysis of concrete floors constructed in stages is developed. It analyses the whole structure, including the completed and uncompleted portions, at all stages. The same mesh is used all the time and therefore re-meshing and location matching are no longer necessary. This is achieved by giving negligibly small stiffness to the uncompleted portions, which in reality do not exist yet. In the analysis, the locked-in strains due to increase in elastic modulus as the concrete hardens and the creep of the hardened concrete are taken into account. Most important of all, this method would enable fully automatic shrinkage movement analysis for the purpose of construction control.

  • Creep, drying shrinkage, modulus of elasiticity and Poisson's ratio of concrete are influenced by a number of factors such as mix type, member thickness, curing condition and loading cases. Particularly, creep and shrinkage in concrete have yet to be studied due to its complicated time-dependent properties. In this study, the concrete creep tests were carried out at varous ages of loading-7, 28, 90, 180 and 365 days in order to investigate and quantify its long-term properties. The test procedures and analysis of the test results were also described herein. The results of this study will enable A/E to calculate effective prestressing forces considering time-dependent prestressing loss and evaluate the structural integrity of the prestressing system using the representative values derived from this property test.

  • The objectives of this study are to develop and evaluate the Neural Network algorithm which can predict the inelastic shortening such as the creep strain and the drying shrinkage strain of reinforced concrete members using the previous test data. New learning algorithms for the prediction of creep strain and the drying shrinkage strain are proposed focusing on input layer components and a normalization method for input data and their validity is examined through several test data. In Neural Network algorithm, the main input data to be trained are the compressive strength of the concrete, volume to surface ratio, curing condition, relative humidity, and the applied load. The results show that the new algorithms proposed herein successfully predict creep strain and the drying shrinkage strain.

  • This study is to measure the creep coefficient by 3 days, 7 days and 28 days in the age when loading for the quality assessment of $350kgf/cm^2$ in the high-strength concrete. And it is to analyze the behavior of creep coefficient by applying the experimental data though the compressive strength test, the elastic modulus test and the dry shrinkage test to the ACI-209, AASHTO-94 and CEB/FIP-90, the prediction mode, and the basis of concrete structural design. Also it is to analyze the behavior of short-term creep coefficient during 91 days in the age when loading through the experiment by using the regression analysis, the statistical theory. As applying it to the long-term behavior during 365 days and comparing with the creep prediction mode and examining it, the result from the analysis of the quality of the concrete is as follows. As the result of comparison and analysis about the ACI-209, AASHTO-94 and CEB/FIP-90, the prediction mode, and the basis of concrete structural design, the normal Portland cement class 1 shows the approximate value with the prediction of GEE/PIP-90 and the basis of concrete structural design, but in case of the prediction of ACI-209 and AASHTO-94, there would be worry of underestimation in the application.

  • Day by day, concrete buildings and structure became high-rising and magnificently vast scheduled, as contributed from the development of improved equipments that suitable to specific construction works and high qualitied Material, the durability of the concrete was highly improved. The temporary elastic reduction occur at vertical members such as walls and columns under vertical loads. Specially, inelastic reduction such as creep and shrinkage occur long termly with elastic one in case of reinforced concrete members. Generally, creep and shrinkage depend on time and this is affected by concrete strength, concrete type, member size, steel ratio, and relative humidity. And elastic reduction rely on time, too because concrete is loaded before revelation of perfect strength in terms of construction conditions. So, tests on mechanical properties of concrete certainly need in order to apply to construction by forecasting an amount of reduction caused by the complex factors. Therefore, in this study the tests on creep, shrinkage are carried out to offer basic data for predicting an amount of long-term Properties at the concrete columns of an object structure, and results of the tests are described.

  • Under sustained load, the stress variation occurs due to creep and shrinkage of concrete on the sections of steel-concrete composite girders. In standard specification for highway bridge, the method of stress estimation considering time effects is based on the concept of Yassumi method. In this study, comparing the analysis results using the AEMM and Yassumii method long-term behaviors, the rationality of specified requirements is checked.

  • Concrete filled steel tubes (CFSTs) are extensively used in a variety of structures due to their structural and economic advantages over other types of structures. Considerable research has been conducted with regards to their short-term behaviour, and very limited studies have focused on their long-term behaviour. In this study, a series of tests were carried out on high strength squat (short) CFSTs and concrete cylinders under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity to better understand their time dependent behaviour. A number of parameters were investigated including the influence of steel and concrete bond, confinement, level of sustained load and sizes of specimens. The results revealed that creep strains increased by more than 40% if there was no bonding between steel tube and concrete core. As expected, creep and shrinkage of concrete inside a steel tube were significantly less than those developed in exposed concrete. At the end of a creep period of six months, all the specimens were tested to failure to observe the influence of sustained loads on the ultimate strength. It was found that creep does not have a major effect on the strength of short CFSTs in the specific experimental study conducted here, which was less than 2.5%.
