  • Solar cells have widely been utilized for a satellite to convert sunlight energy into electricity in space. Many different types of solar cells appropriate for each satellite program are available in current markets, which enables us to construct a solar array light and small often required from a low Earth orbit (LEO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite. Thus, it is important to choose a proper solar cell satisfying the requirements of mass and size for the solar array. In this article, we have surveyed typical suppliers and have discussed some characteristics of solar cells. Conceptual design examples of the solar array for LEO SAR satellites using several types of solar cells have been performed to show the pros and cons of solar cells by comparison of the total mass and size necessary for the solar array.

  • The purpose of this study is to explain the tectonic characteristics of 'Kan' which is an unit of composition in the head residence of Uisong Kims. Here, the 'Kan' is assumed as a conceptual framework to organize a house and also a maneuvering tool to control the spatial order with relationship between the whole and the part. Not limited to the simple conceptual aspects, but the interrelated elements such as the site conditions, modules, functions, structure and aesthetic factors. Through the process of the study, the role of 'Kan' is proved to be a tectonic tool for self-regulating architectural order by relation matrix of elements. 'Kan' is not only a fixed measuring tool for functions and material of a house but also a flexible device to control the building composition. 'Kan' is certainly a relative subject for measurement of form, space and aesthetic quality.

  • In the history of art and architecture, there are different characteristics in relationship between light and space. Among them, two characteristics seem to be fundamental : The first is that contrast between light and darkness is more articulated. Direct sunlight penetrates into the dark interior space made by heavy masonry structure. This is generally found in the traditional western religious buildings. The second is that light is mixed with darkness and becomes shade. Shade is different from shadow that is usually perceived as the opposite of light. Sunlight is filtered under through the big horizontal roof and rice paper walls in the traditional far-east Asian architecture and becomes weak ambient light. In this shade, there is no strong contrast between light and darkness. This difference is not only originated from the architectural differences, but also originated from the conceptual differences about light, space, and the world in two cultures. This paper tries to study the philosophical, aesthetical backgrounds as well as case examples in art and architecture of two characteristics. Based on the case studies, this paper aims to analyze the main perceptual structure. Finding the relationship between light, space, and human body by making three dimensional models is the crucial analysis method of this research. Although in real life and experiencing the world, these two characteristics are not clearly separated, comparative study based on different cultures gives opportunity to think of diverse perspectives on light and space.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret Korean traditional space as text on the basis of Structuralism. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this research contains basic concepts and theories of Structuralism and discusses the possibilities of typological approaches in Korean traditional space interpretation. Secondly, As typological structure of traditional space, spacial and visual expressive characteristics in traditional residential space based on traditional thoughts of Koreans formed with inherent consciousness are considered with Hjelmslev's Structuralism and Wonhyo's Whajaeng theory. Finally, This study tries conceptual analysis based on Lacan's Metaphor and Metonymy emerged from unconscious mechanisms about interpretation and induction of the traditional spacial structure for contemporary Application. Structure is a group of elements forming a covariant ensemble. From this point of view, this study validates that texts are understood when methods that bring back to the creative processes and intentions are found by Text Hermeneutics.

  • As today's cultural environment entered the information society, one of the biggest trends of future is the interests of nationalism. The purpose of this study is to interpret interrelation between sign and space design and analyze Korean contemporary space how to universalize traditional conception and attitude in design. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this study contains basic concepts and theories of semiotics and discusses the possibilities of semiotic approaches in spatial designs. Since the most outspoken theorist in this field can be found in writings of C.S. Peirce, American philosopher, the theoretical basis for this research Is taken from the Peirce's Semiotics. Secondly, this research tries the conceptual approaches based on traditional thoughts of Koreans formed with the philosophic background occurred with the universe, religion and the nature. And then, it approaches for the typical characteristics of Korean traditional space to interpret the meaning and adopt the triadic structure of sign. The structure is classified in status, icon, index, and symbol to analyze the Korean contemporary space design. Finally, it examines the expression structure of the nature of Korea that is succeeded in contemporary space design as the semiotic analysis of the application examples ; and studies the examples that try to set and solve the concept of space in modern society as the real issues in our cultural situations.

  • We present a three-mirror anastigmat(TMA) optical system for New Generation GOCI. In order to reduce the ghost optimized filter and baffle. By using carefully chosen antireflective coating and tilted filter angle, we fulfilled the design SNR requirement of 1500. We then designed a new entrance baffle and an internal baffle capable of producing the ghost ratio better than 0.01% of the nominal signal. The entrance baffle limits FOV to $0.75^{\circ}$ (E/W) $\times$ $0.60^{\circ}$ (S/N), and prevents the system from strong sun illumination, and the internal baffle prevents stray and scattered ray from entering into the telescope cavity. From these filter and baffle design, we confirmed that the instrument signal to noise ratio can be met with the current conceptual opto-mechanical design.

  • With increased human activity in space, the risk of re-entry and collision between space objects is constantly increasing. Hence, the need for space situational awareness (SSA) programs has been acknowledged by many experienced space agencies. Optical and radar sensors, which enable the surveillance and tracking of space objects, are the most important technical components of SSA systems. In particular, combinations of radar systems and optical sensor networks play an outstanding role in SSA programs. At present, Korea operates the optical wide field patrol network (OWL-Net), the only optical system for tracking space objects. However, due to their dependence on weather conditions and observation time, it is not reasonable to use optical systems alone for SSA initiatives, as they have limited operational availability. Therefore, the strategies for developing radar systems should be considered for an efficient SSA system using currently available technology. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance of a radar system in detecting and tracking space objects. With the radar system investigated, the minimum sensitivity is defined as detection of a $1-m^2$ radar cross section (RCS) at an altitude of 2,000 km, with operating frequencies in the L, S, C, X or Ku-band. The results of power budget analysis showed that the maximum detection range of 2,000 km, which includes the low earth orbit (LEO) environment, can be achieved with a transmission power of 900 kW, transmit and receive antenna gains of 40 dB and 43 dB, respectively, a pulse width of 2 ms, and a signal processing gain of 13.3 dB, at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. We defined the key parameters of the radar following a performance analysis of the system. This research can thus provide guidelines for the conceptual design of radar systems for national SSA initiatives.

  • For the very light jet aircraft design, the design baseline configuration has been selected using the logical decision making process, and the design optimization problem is formulated by considering the airworthiness regulations as design constraints. Airworthiness regulations are the minimum requirements for the safe aircraft flight and must be considered from the conceptual design stage. After carefully selecting the airworthiness constraints and the user specified requirements, a series of design making models including the affinity diagram, nested column diagram, quality function deployment (QFD), Pugh concept selection matrix, are used to find and evaluate alternative configuration baselines. From the feasible design space searching process, the best altenative design, which satisfies the airworthiness constraints while excluding the user subjective decisions as much as possible, has been successfully derived.

  • Today, a definition of tourism is shifting from simple sightseeing to experiencing various cultures directly and/or indirectly. Along with the shift, all countries of the world dedicate their full attention on globalization project. In order to do so, they try to promote their images and cultures through eating and drinking spaces for food where the rest of the world can approach with ease. China is a country of diverse culinary culture. By analyzing eating and drinking spaces operated in four Chinese cities, this research studies how the traditional Chinese elements are expressed in modernization. With the research, it will navigate a direction as a new design way to establish modernized traditionality in the future. The research conducted an advanced research that set up and analyzed a standard frame of realizing practice for traditionality. By doing so, it sorted out and reviewed the characteristics of interior space into four styles; an indicative imitation method, a partial invoked method, a partial transformation method and a conceptual reception method. According to the outcome of an analysis, (a) the indicative imitation method that directly employed Chinese tradition was most used one, followed by (b) the partial invoked method that carried a part of traditional space, (c) the partial transformation method that simplified or transformed the tradition, and (d) the conceptual reception method that interpreted hidden minds and concepts by illustrating modern spirit over an inherent order in traditional Chinese space, in respective order.
