Internal voids affecting the mechanical properties of wood composite were classified into two catagories and characteristics of voids were examined according to density variation of strandboard. The void distribution and content of strandboard according to board density were measured by X-ray computed tomography system and analized using image processing software. Prior to investigation, the densities of strandboard were measured by densitometer and the results were showed high correlation with conventional oven drying method. Based on the image analysis conducted on captured images by X-ray tomography, low resolution can be used to capture the macro-voids (between strand) but not the micro-voids (within strands). Intermediate resolution can be used to capture both the macro and the micro-voids and high resolution can be successfully used to capture the majority of the micro-voids. The content of macro-void was measured and content of micro-void was computed by corresponding related equation. The macro-void distribution can be successfully understood and void content can be correctly estimated through the results.
Purpose. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of image matching experience of operators on the accuracy and working time of image registration between radiographic and optical scan images. Materials and methods. Computed tomography and optical scan of a dentate dental arch were obtained. Image matching between the computed tomography and the optical scan (IDC S1, Amann Girrbach, Koblah, Austria) was performed using the point-based automatic registration method in planning software programs (Implant Studio, 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) using two different experience conditions on image registration: experienced group and inexperienced group (n = 15 per group, N = 30). The accuracy of image registration in each group was evaluated by measuring linear discrepancies between matched images, and working time was recorded. Independent t test was used to statistically analyze the result data (α = .05). Results. In the linear deviation, no statistically significant difference was found between the experienced and inexperienced groups. Meanwhile, the working time for image registration was significantly shorter in the experienced group than in the inexperienced group (P = .007). Conclusion. Difference in the image matching experience may not influence the accuracy of image registration of optical scan to computed tomography when the point-based automatic registration was used, but affect the working time for the image registration.

In this paper, a novel tissue engineering scaffold design method based on triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is proposed. After generating the hexahedral elements for a 3D anatomical shape using the distance field algorithm, the unit cell libraries composed of triply periodic minimal surfaces are mapped into the subdivided hexahedral elements using the shape function widely used in the finite element method. In addition, a heterogeneous implicit solid representation method is introduced to design a 3D (Three-dimensional) bio-mimetic scaffold for tissue engineering from a sequence of computed tomography (CT) medical image data. CT image of a human spine bone is used as the case study for designing a 3D bio-mimetic scaffold model from CT image data.

Aneurysms arising from the ophthalmic artery itself are very rare compared with aneurysms originating from the bifurcation of the ophthalmic artery and carotid artery. There was only one reported case of a ruptured aneurysm of the ophthalmic artery itself. We discuss clinical significance of an aneurysm at this site, as well as the role of three dimentional image of multislice computed tomography angiogram[3D-image of MCTA] in determining the cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage[SAH].

The decrease of the distance between particle centers due to the growth of the sinter necks can be explained by the well known two-particle model. Unfortunately this model fails to provide a comprehensive description of the processes for 3D specimens. Furthermore, there is a significant discrepancy between the calculated and the measured shrinkage because particle rearrangements are not considered. Only the recently developed analysis of the particle movements inside of 3D specimens using micro focus computed tomography $({\mu}CT)$, combined with photogrammetric image analysis, can deliver the necessary experimental data to improve existing sintering theories. In this work, ${\mu}CT$ analysis was applied to spherical copper powders. Based on photogrammetric image analysis, it is possible to determine the positions of all particle centers for tracking the particles over the entire sintering process and to follow the formation and breaking of the particle bonds. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of the obtained data. In the future, high resolution synchrotron radiation tomography will be utilized to obtain in-situ data and images of higher resolution.
Objective: Computed tomography (CT) is an established method for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of multiple myeloma. Here, we investigated the potential of photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) in terms of image quality, diagnostic confidence, and radiation dose compared with energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT). Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, patients with known multiple myeloma underwent clinically indicated whole-body PCD-CT. The image quality of PCD-CT was assessed qualitatively by three independent radiologists for overall image quality, edge sharpness, image noise, lesion conspicuity, and diagnostic confidence using a 5-point Likert scale (5 = excellent), and quantitatively for signal homogeneity using the coefficient of variation (CV) of Hounsfield Units (HU) values and modulation transfer function (MTF) via the full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the frequency space. The results were compared with those of the current clinical standard EID-CT protocols as controls. Additionally, the radiation dose (CTDIvol) was determined. Results: We enrolled 35 patients with multiple myeloma (mean age 69.8 ± 9.1 years; 18 [51%] males). Qualitative image analysis revealed superior scores (median [interquartile range]) for PCD-CT regarding overall image quality (4.0 [4.0-5.0] vs. 4.0 [3.0-4.0]), edge sharpness (4.0 [4.0-5.0] vs. 4.0 [3.0-4.0]), image noise (4.0 [4.0-4.0] vs. 3.0 [3.0-4.0]), lesion conspicuity (4.0 [4.0-5.0] vs. 4.0 [3.0-4.0]), and diagnostic confidence (4.0 [4.0-5.0] vs. 4.0 [3.0-4.0]) compared with EID-CT (P ≤ 0.004). In quantitative image analyses, PCD-CT compared with EID-CT revealed a substantially lower FWHM (2.89 vs. 25.68 cy/pixel) and a significantly more homogeneous signal (mean CV ± standard deviation [SD], 0.99 ± 0.65 vs. 1.66 ± 0.5; P < 0.001) at a significantly lower radiation dose (mean CTDIvol ± SD, 3.33 ± 0.82 vs. 7.19 ± 3.57 mGy; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Whole-body PCD-CT provides significantly higher subjective and objective image quality at significantly reduced radiation doses than the current clinical standard EID-CT protocols, along with readily available multi-spectral data, facilitating the potential for further advanced post-processing.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to apply a newly developed free software program, at low cost and with minimal time, to evaluate the quality of dental and maxillofacial cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: A polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom, CQP-IFBA, was scanned in 3 CBCT units with 7 protocols. A macro program was developed, using the free software ImageJ, to automatically evaluate the image quality parameters. The image quality evaluation was based on 8 parameters: uniformity, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), spatial resolution, the artifact index, geometric accuracy, and low-contrast resolution. Results: The image uniformity and noise depended on the protocol that was applied. Regarding the CNR, high-density structures were more sensitive to the effect of scanning parameters. There were no significant differences between SNR and CNR in centered and peripheral objects. The geometric accuracy assessment showed that all the distance measurements were lower than the real values. Low-contrast resolution was influenced by the scanning parameters, and the 1-mm rod present in the phantom was not depicted in any of the 3 CBCT units. Smaller voxel sizes presented higher spatial resolution. There were no significant differences among the protocols regarding artifact presence. Conclusion: This software package provided a fast, low-cost, and feasible method for the evaluation of image quality parameters in CBCT.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the developed air mattress for reducing the deterioration of image quality due to the scattered radiation generated on the computed tomography equipment table. 5 cm and 10 cm thick air mattresses were developed and the image quality was measured by scanning the AAPM phantom according to thickness and thickness. Statistical significance was confirmed by One Way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) Compared with the AAPM phantom scanned in the standard method, the image with the air mattress did not show any difference, but when the air mattress was not applied, the CT number and uniformity were low and the noise was high, and the spatial resolution Respectively. The developed air mattress has no harmful effect on the diagnostic image, it is very effective in improving the image quality and can increase the CT image quality by simply applying Air Mattress to existing equipment without using the technology applied to the latest and high-cost equipment.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reproducibility and usefulness of an image through the fusion of the computed tomography image and the magnetic resonance image by using a self-produced phantom when planning the treatment, and also to compare and analyze the target dose on the acquired image. The size of small hole and the reproducibility of capacity existed in the phantom on the image of the phantom obtained by the computed tomography and the magnetic resonance image of the phantom scanning with different intensity of magnetic field are compared, and the change of dose in the random target is compared and analyzed.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of linear measurements of 3-dimensional (3D) images generated by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and facial scanning systems, and to assess the effect of scanning parameters, such as CBCT exposure settings, on image quality. Materials and Methods: CBCT and facial scanning images of an anthropomorphic phantom showing 13 soft-tissue anatomical landmarks were used in the study. The distances between the anatomical landmarks on the phantom were measured to obtain a reference for evaluating the accuracy of the 3D facial soft-tissue images. The distances between the 3D image landmarks were measured using a 3D distance measurement tool. The effect of scanning parameters on CBCT image quality was evaluated by visually comparing images acquired under different exposure conditions, but at a constant threshold. Results: Comparison of the repeated direct phantom and image-based measurements revealed good reproducibility. There were no significant differences between the direct phantom and image-based measurements of the CBCT surface volume-rendered images. Five of the 15 measurements of the 3D facial scans were found to be significantly different from their corresponding direct phantom measurements(P<.05). The quality of the CBCT surface volume-rendered images acquired at a constant threshold varied across different exposure conditions. Conclusion: These results proved that existing 3D imaging techniques were satisfactorily accurate for clinical applications, and that optimizing the variables that affected image quality, such as the exposure parameters, was critical for image acquisition.
