A feasibility study on the alternating jet flow under the static electromagnetic field was carried out. When a fluid with electrical conductivity lies in the static electromagnetic field and moves electric current occurs in the fluid. Due to the electromagnetic field and the electric current, lorentz force generates in the fluid, which undergo the 'breaking' effect to the fluid. In order to simulate the complex fluid flow in the magnetic field, electromagnetic and fluid flow analysis need to be solved simultaneously. In the present study, a SOLA (SOLution Algorithm) scheme was used in order to calculate electromagnetic and fluid flow field. Jet flow without an electromagnetic field was compared with analytical solution in order to validate the flow analysis scheme. Effect of jet velocity on the flow pattern down the jet was investigated.

In this study, flow-induced vibration (FIV) analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. Fluid domains are modeled using the computational grid system with local grid deforming and remeshing techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating compressor model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.

A series of 1/5 scale-down reactor flow distribution tests had been conducted to determine the hydraulic characteristics of an APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus), which were used as the input data for an open core thermal margin analysis code. In this study, to examine the applicability of computational fluid dynamics with the porous model to the analysis of APR+ internal flow, simulations were conducted using the commercial multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX V.14. It was concluded that the porous domain approach for some reactor internal structures could adequately predict the flow characteristics inside a reactor in a qualitative manner. If sufficient computational resources are available, the predicted core inlet flow distribution is expected to be more accurate by considering the real geometry of the internal structures, especially upstream of the core inlet.
Hydraulic servo valves are widely used in various fluid power systems because of their fast response and precision control. In this paper, we studied the effect of metering notch shapes and amount of their openings on the flow characteristics within the spool valve using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code, FLUENT. To obtain the results for more realistic operating conditions, viscous heating due to the jet flow and viscosity variation of the hydraulic fluid with temperature were considered. For two types of notch shape, streamlines, oil temperature and viscosity distributions, and variations of flow and friction forces acting on spool were showed. The flow and friction forces affected by the metering notch shapes and their openings, and oil temperature rise near metering notch was significant enough to results in the jamming phenomenon. A thermohydrodynamic (THD) flow analysis adopted in this paper can be used in optimum design of hydraulic servo valves.
We make use of cubic B-spline interpolation function in two cases: heat conduction and fluid flow problems. Cubic B-spline test function is employed because it is superior to approximation of linear and non-linear problems. We investigated the accuracy of the numerical formulation and focused on the position of the breakpoints within the computational domain. When the domain is divided by partitions of equal space, the results show poor accuracy. For the case of a heat conduction problem this partition can not reflect the temperature gradient which is rapidly changed near the wall. To correct the problem, we have more grid points near the wall or the region which has a rapid change of variables. When we applied the unequally spaced breakpoints, the results show high accuracy. Based on the comparison of the linear problem, we extended to the highly non-linear fluid flow problems.
Flow-field design has much influence over the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) because it affects the pressure magnitude and distribution of the reactant gases. To obtain the pressure magnitude and distribution of reactant gases in four kinds of flow-field designs without additional measurement equipment, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed. After the CFD analysis, the performance values of PEMFC according to the flow-field configurations were measured via a single cell test. As expected, the pressure differences due to different flow-field configurations were related to the PEMFC performance because the actual performance results showed the same tendency as the results of the CFD analysis. A large pressure drop resulted in high PEMFC performance. So, the single serpentine configuration gave the highest performance. On the other hand, the parallel flow-field configuration gave the lowest performance because the pressure difference between inlet and outlet was the lowest.

In this study, in order to examine the applicability of computational fluid dynamics with the porous model to the analysis of APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus) internal flow, simulation was conducted with the commercial multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS CFX V.14. In addition, among the various reactor internals, the effect of flow skirt geometry on reactor internal flow was investigated. It was concluded that the porous model for some reactor internal structures could adequately predict the hydraulic characteristics inside the reactor in a qualitative manner. If sufficient computation resource is available, the predicted core inlet flow distribution is expected to be more accurate, by considering the real geometry of the internal structures, especially located in the upstream of the core inlet. Finally, depending on the shape of the flow skirt, the flow distribution was somewhat different locally. The standard deviation of the mass flow rate (${\sigma}$) for the original shape of flow skirt was smaller, than that for the modified shape of flow skirt. This means that the original shape of the flow skirt may give a more uniform distribution of mass flow rate at the core inlet plane, which may be more desirable for the core cooling.

This paper deals with finite element analysis for incompressible viscous flow problem By formulating the governing equation based on the streamline upwind concept , the wiggle phenomenon of fluid flow is minimized in spite of a few number of finite element used. The penalty function method which can reduce the number of independent variables is adopted for the purpose of computational efficiency and the selected reduced integral is carried out for the convection and pressure terms to reserve the stability of solution. In time-history analysis of fluid flow, the accuracy and reliability of an obtained solution are established by using the predictor-corrector method. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted wi th the object ive to establish the validity of the proposed numerical approach.
We conducted the three-dimensional fluid flow analysis in a Taylor reactor using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Taylor flow can be categorized into five regions according to Reynolds number, i.e., circular Couette flow (CCF), Taylor vortex flow (TVF), wavy vortex flow (WVF), modulated wavy vortex flow (MWVF), and turbulent Taylor vortex flow (TTVF), and we investigated the flow characteristics at each region. For each region, the shape, number and length of vortices were different and they influenced on the bypass flow. As a result, the Taylor vortex was found at TVF, WVF, MWVF and TTVF regions. The highest number of Taylor vortex was observed at TVF region, while the lowest at TTVF region. The numerical model was validated by comparing with the experimental data and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental data.
