Mechanism of a periodic oscillation of shock-induced combustion over a two- dimensional wedges and axi-symmetric cones were investigated through a series of numerical simulations at off-attaching condition of oblique detonation waves(ODW). A same computational domain over 40 degree half-angle was considered for two-dimensional and axi-symmetric shock-induced combustion phenomena. For two-dimensional shock-induced combustion, a 2H2+02+17N2 mixture was considered at Mach number was 5.85with initial temperature 292 K and initial pressureof 12 KPa. The Rankine-Hugoniot relation has solution of attached waves at this condition. For axi-symmetric shock-induced combustion, a H2+2O2+2Ar mixture was considered at Mach number was 5.0 with initial temperature 288 K and initial pressure of 200 mmHg. The flow conditions were based on the conditions of similar experiments and numerical studies.[1, 3]Numerical simulation was carried out with a compressible fluid dynamics code with a detailed hydrogen-oxygen combustion mechanism.[4, 5] A series of calculations were carried out by changing the fluid dynamic time scale. The length wedge is varied as a simplest way of changing the fluid dynamic time scale. Result reveals that there is a chemical kinetic limit of the detached overdriven detonation wave, in addition to the theoretical limit predicted by Rankine-Hugoniot theory with equilibrium chemistry. At the off-attaching condition of ODW the shock and reaction waves still attach at a wedge as a periodically oscillating oblique shock-induced combustion, if the Rankine-Hugoniot limit of detachment isbut the chemical kinetic limit is not.Mechanism of the periodic oscillation is considered as interactions between shock and reaction waves coupled with chemical kinetic effects. There were various regimes of the periodicmotion depending on the fluid dynamic time scales. The difference between the two-dimensional and axi-symmetric simulations were distinct because the flow path is parallel and uniform behind the oblique shock waves, but is not behind the conical shock waves. The shock-induced combustion behind the conical shockwaves showed much more violent and irregular characteristics. From the investigation of characteristic chemical time, condition of the periodic instability is identified as follows; at the detaching condition of Rankine-Hugoniot theory, (1) flow residence time is smaller than the chemical characteristic time, behind the detached shock wave with heat addition, (2) flow residence time should be greater than the chemical characteristic time, behind an oblique shock wave without heat addition.

In this study, 1-way fluid structure interaction analysis(FSI) for the shutter, component of side jet thruster was performed to evaluate the safety. Driving torque to open nozzle, thermal and high pressure load of hot gas was applied to shutter. Thus, the shutter must be designed to endure this load during combustion. We carried out computational fluid dynamics analysis to obtain the pressure, temperature, and heat transfer coefficient of hot gas of side jet thruster. We then used the data as the load condition for a thermal structural analysis using a mapping method. The locations with the maximum stress and temperature distributions were found. We compared the maximum stress with the tensile stress of shutter material according to temperature to evaluate the safety. We also analyzed the radial deformation of the shutter to set the proper interface gap with the side jet thruster parts.

In this paper, the scavenging process of various transfer ports was evaluated to improve the performance of a small two-stroke engine for unmanned aerial vehicles. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to four transfer ports for the evaluation, and a three-phase scavenging model was developed and applied to the simulation results for the quantitative comparison of scavenging performance. the short-circuit of fresh charge was restrained and an in-cylinder turbulent kinetic energy was enhanced by changing the transfer port. Also, a difference in the scavenging for each port were confirmed by applying the three-phase model to the simulation results.
This study investigated the influence of air staging on combustion and NOx emission in a tangential-firing boiler at a 560 MWe capacity. For air staging, the stoichiometric ratio (SR) for the burner zone was varied from 0.995 to 0.94 while the overall value was fixed at 1.2. The temperature and heat flux in the burner zone and upper furnace corresponded to the distribution of SR, while the total boiler efficiency remained similar. The NOx emission at the furnace exit was reduced by up to 20% when the SR in the burner zone decreased to 0.94. However, the amount of unburned carbon and slagging propensity was not noticeably influenced by the changes in the SR of the burner zone. Therefore, it was favorable to lower the SR of the burner zone for reduction of NOx emission.

The shock-induced combustion ramjet (shcramjet) is a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion concept which over-comes the drawbacks of the long, massive combustors present in the scramjet by using a standing oblique detonation wave (a coupled shock-combustion front) as a means of nearly instantaneous heat addition. A novel shcramjet combustor design that makes use of wedge-shaped flameholders to avoid detonation wave-wall interactions is proposed and analyzed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in this study. The laminar, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a non-equilibrium hydrogen-air combustion model based on chemical kinetics are used to represent the physical system. The equations are solved with the WARP (window-allocatable resolver for propulsion) CFD code (see: Parent, B. and Sislian, J. P., “The Use of Domain Decomposition in Accelerating the Convergence of Quasihyperbolic Systems”, J. of Comp. Physics, Vol. 179, No. 1,2002, pages 140-169). The solver was validated with experimental results found in the literature. A series of steady-state numerical simulations was conducted using WARP and it was deter-mined by means of thrust potential calculations that this combustor design is a viable one for shcramjet propulsion: assuming a shcramjet flight Mach number of twelve at an altitude of 36,000 m, the geometrical dimensions used for the combustor give rise to an operational range for combustor inlet Mach numbers between six and eight. Different shcramjet flight Mach numbers would require different combustor dimensions and hence a variable geometry system in or-der to be viable.
A fire resistance certification needs to be obtained before fire protection paint can be used in Korea. In the case of paint, the tests for certification are fire, gas hazard and bond strength. According to the hazard test standard of combustion gas, 16 mice are sacrificed every test. Therefore, there are ethical problems for the experimenter and legal problems for the laboratory. Accordingly, many alternatives are being assessed, such as combustion gas analysis, but they have not replaced animal testing yet. With gas hazard testing, the exhaust gas temperature can be measured. The property of the initial reaction of a specific fire paint can be characterized by this temperature. The purpose of this study was to consider the improvement point for a gas hazard test through comparative analysis of the exhaust temperature and the time of death of the mice.

The common-rail injectors are the most critical component of the CRDI diesel engines that dominantly affect engine performances through high pressure injection with exact control. Thus, from now on the advanced combustion technologies for common-rail diesel injection engine require high performance fuel injectors. Accordingly, the previous studies on the numerical and experimental analysis of the diesel injector have focused on a optimum geometry to induce proper injection rate. In this study, computational predictions of performance of the diesel injector have been performed to evaluate internal flow characteristics for various needle lift and the spray pattern at the nozzle exit. To our knowledge, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the internal flow passage of an entire injector duct including injection and return routes has never been studied. In this study, major design parameters concerning internal routes in the injector are optimized by using a CFD analysis and Response Surface Method (RSM). The computational prediction of the internal flow characteristics of the common-rail diesel injector was carried out by using STAR-CCM+7.06 code. In this work, computations were carried out under the assumption that the internal flow passage is a steady-state condition at the maximum needle lift. The design parameters are optimized by using the L16 orthogonal array and polynomial regression, local-approximation characteristics of RSM. Meanwhile, the optimum values are confirmed to be valid in 95% confidence and 5% significance level through analysis of variance (ANOVA). In addition, optimal design and prototype design were confirmed by calculating the injection quantities, resulting in the improvement of the injection performance by more than 54%.

Design of a shape transition nozzle is carried out as a part of building a lab-scale supersonic combustion experimental equipment. In order to connect directly the circular shaped vitiation air heater to the square shaped scramjet combustor, area change is evaluated by using the method of characteristics. Shape transition function is introduced to control the transition rate. Boundary layer correction was made through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics with the assessment on the several shape transition functions. The shape transition nozzle is proved minimizing the growth of boundary layer at the center of the rectangular nozzle surfaces that caused by the pressure gradient at the corners of the rectangular nozzle and the following recirculation regions.

Analysis of conjugated heat transfer has been conducted for the diffuser exposed to hot combustion gas to design the mechanical durability in high temperature. All the heat transfer means, conduction, convection and radiation have been considered to calculate the total heat flux from hot gas to diffuser surface. The calculation has been implemented by two kinds of methods. One thing is one dimensional method based on empirical equations. The other is CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) axisymmetric calculation containing ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST(Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model and DO(Discrete Ordinate) radiation model. The derived results of two methods have compared and showed similar values. From this result, the amount of cooling water and the dimension of water cooling channel were decided.

A computational fluid dynamics simulation of pyrotechnic material combustion inside a cylindrical closed vessel was carried out using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The 5th order upwind WENO scheme and the improved delayed detached eddy turbulence model were implemented to capture shock waves. The flow structure was analyzed inside the cylindrical vessel with a pressure sensor installed at the side wall center. The analysis revealed that the pressure oscillated because of the shock wave vibration. Additionally, the simulation results with four different sensor tab depths implied that, inside the sensor tab, eddies were generated by the excessively large gap between the sensor diaphragm and the side wall. These eddies caused irregularity to the measured time-pressure curve, which is an undesirable characteristic.
