  • This study is to present explicit analytical expressions for calculating bearing capacity factor $N_{\gamma}$, to provide results of the numerical computation instead of the graphical method. In this study, $N_{\gamma}$ is proposed in the critical failure surface on assumption that the center of log spiral in the radial shear zone can be located at the any points of around footing. The critical failure surface is one which yields minimum passive pressure $P_{\gamma}$ on the radial shear zone from the family of log spirals accoding to change of the center of log spiral. This study adoptes Terzaghi's bearing capacity principle(e.g., Prandtl's mechanism, limit equilibrium equation, superposition principle) but the soil wedge in an elastic zone makes angle $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$ with the horizontal and the location of the log spiral's center.

  • This paper proposes a method of solving a unit commitment problem using parallel tabu search (PTS). The TS is efficient optimization method using meta-heuristic. In this paper, to reduce the computation time for evaluating the neighborhoods, an evaluating method only on changed part and a path relinking method as diversification strategy are proposed. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, we simulated for 10 units system and 110 units system. Numerical results show improvements in the generation costs and the computation time compared with conventional methods. Numerical results show improvements in the generation cost and the computation time compared to previously obtained results.

  • A numerical computation is carried out to analyse characteristics of flow fields around Air Supported Ships having arbitrary form. The computations are performed in a rectangular grid system with MAC(Marker And Cell) method. The governing equations are represented in a Finite Difference form by forward differencing in time and centered differencing in space except for convection terms. For validation of this numerical analysis method, the computation of flow fields around Catamaran and ACV(Air Cushion Vehicle) with pressure distribution on free surface are done, and that around Surface Effect Ship is also carried out. The results of the computations are compared with the those of existed numerical computation and experimental results with the same condition.

  • A novel adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) strategy based on the Moment-of-Fluid (MOF) method for volume-tracking dynamic interface computation is presented. The Moment-of-Fluid method is a new interface reconstruction and volume advection method using volume fraction as well as material centroid. The mesh refinement is performed based on the error indicator, the deviation of the actual centroid obtained by interface reconstruction from the reference centroid given by moment advection process. Using the AMR-MOF method, the accuracy of volume-tracking computation with evolving interfaces is improved significantly compared to other published results.

  • In mechanical design, design process is mainly composed of design, explanation and evaluation. In this paper, Using Genetic Algorithms (GA), Evolutionary computation is introduced as new design process. This method promote the efficiency and power of design. Due to the known characteristics of the stage, the approach basically involves a synthetic design method with the composition of building blocks representing the elements of mechanical objects. In order for the building blocks to be more suitable for representation and evolution of mechanical structures, Elementary Cell Blocks (ECBs) are introduced as new building blocks. In this paper, we have demonstrated the implementation of the approach with the design of gear systems.

  • In multibody dynamic analysis, one of the most important problems is to reduce computation times for real-time simulation. This paper presents the derivation procedure of equations of motion of a 6${\times}$6 autonomous vehicle in terms of chassis local coordinates which do not require coordinates transformation matrix to enhance efficiency for real-time dynamic analysis. Also, equations of motion are derived using the VT(velocity transformation) technique and symbolic computation method coded by MATLAB. The Jacobian matrix of the equations of motion of a system is derived from symbolic operations to apply the implicit integration method. The analysis results were compared with ADAMS results to verify the accuracy and approve the feasibility of real time analysis.

  • In the present paper is presented a new matrix pencil-based numerical approach achieving the computation of the elemen-tary divisors of a given matrix $A \in C^{n\timesn}$ This computation is at-tained without performing similarity transformations and the whole procedure is based on the construction of the Piecewise Arithmetic Progression Sequence(PAPS) of the associated pencil $\lambda I_n$ -A of matrix A for all the appropriate values of $\lambda$ belonging to the set of eigenvalues of A. This technique produces a stable and accurate numerical algorithm working satisfactorily for matrices with a well defined eigenstructure. The whole technique can be applied for the computation of the first second and Jordan canonical form of a given matrix $A \in C^{n\timesn}$. The results are accurate for matrices possessing a well defined canonical form. In case of defective matrices indications of the most appropriately computed canonical form. In case of defective matrices indication of the most appropriately computed canonical form are given.

  • In rigid-plastic finite element method, there is a heavy computation time and convergence problem. In this study. static-explicit rigid-plastic finite element method will be introduced. This method is the way that restrict the convergence interval. In result, convergence problem and computation time due to large non-linearity in the existing numerical analysis method were no longer a critical problem. Also, we investigated the effect of punch stroke and the strain increment this method. It is expected that various results from the numerical analysis will give very useful information for the design of tools in sheet metal forming process.

  • We present numerical and experimental result of the rotating flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify, if any, the fundamental reasons of discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. Specifically, we check if the various assumptions prerequisite for the validity of the classical Ekman pumping law are satisfied for periodic flows under a background rotation.
