  • Using the results from laboratory soil test, field vane test and piezocone penetration test, the engineering characteristics of the soft ground at east side of Gwangyang Port, which is located at south coast of Jeollanam-do, were investigated and optimal piezocone penetration test depth was derived to calculate piezocone factor. In this paper, the results of 61 laboratory soil tests, 226 times of field vane tests and 26 piezocone penetration tests were used. The result of laboratory soil test suggested that some physical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, liquid limit and plastic index and others are higher than other south coast regions, meanwhile uniaxial compression strength, undrained shear strength, defined as mechanical property, appeared to be relatively small, distributed widely. According to the plastic chart, the ground was classified as high compressibility clay and low compressibility clay, mostly represent to Type 3 clay by Robertson (1990)'s classification chart. Piezocone factor was calculated by empirical method, based on the undrained shear strength which was obtained by the field vane test. According to the analysis with 3 different depth range, to set the appropriate measured depth range of piezocone penetration for comparation, using average value of the range of 5 times the vane length showed the highest correlation.

  • Base pressure at the base of high-speed jet has long been one of the important issues from both the view points of fluid dynamics as well as practical engineering applications. The base pressure characteristics of incompressible flows have been well known to date. However, the base pressure at transonic or supersonic speeds would be different due to the compressibility effects and shock waves. In the present paper, a CFD study has been performed to understand the base pressure characteristics at transonic and supersonic speeds, prior to experimental work. An emphasis is placed on the control of the base pressure using a simple orifice. A variety of supersonic jet plumes have been explored to investigate the flow variables influencing the base pressure. The results obtained were validated with existing experimental data and discussed in terms of the base pressure and discharge coefficient of the orifice.

  • To implement the insects' flapping flight for developing flapping MAVs(micro air vehicles), the unsteady flow characteristics of the insects' forward flight is investigated. In this paper, two-dimensional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) simulations are conducted to examine realistic flow features of insects' flapping flight and to examine the flexibility effects of the insect's wing. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method are implemented as the fluid module while the dynamic finite element equations using a direct integration method are employed as the solid module. In order to exchange physical information to each module, the common refinement method is employed as the data transfer method. Also, a simple and efficient dynamic grid deformation technique based on Delaunay graph mapping is used to deform computational grids. Compared to the earlier researches of two-dimensional rigid wing simulations, key physical phenomena and flow patterns such as vortex pairing and vortex staying can still be observed. For example, lift is mainly generated during downstroke motion by high effective angle of attack caused by translation and lagging motion. A large amount of thrust is generated abruptly at the end of upstroke motion. However, the quantitative aspect of flow field is somewhat different. A flexible wing generates more thrust but less lift than a rigid wing. This is because the net force acting on wing surface is split into two directions due to structural flexibility. As a consequence, thrust and propulsive efficiency was enhanced considerably compared to a rigid wing. From these numerical simulations, it is seen that the wing flexibility yields a significant impact on aerodynamic characteristics.

  • The settlement characteristics of waste landfill site must be considered in the design of sanitary landfill as well as in the course of the rehabilitation of the landfill site. Among prediction methods for settlement of landfill site, especially Gibson and Lo model and Power Creep Law have been successfully applied to the landfill site where the amount of settlement was large and the secondary settlement was obvious. Therefore, the effects of organic content on the model parameter values utilized in both Gibson Lo model and Power Creep Law were studied by using a large consolidation testing apparatus. The organic content is each 20%, 40%, 60% of total volume and consolidation load is $0.1{\sim}1.6kg/cm^2$. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) The reference compressibility of Power Creep Law is decreased according to the increments of consolidation load: (2) The field measurement is more similar to the Power Creep Law than the Gibson and Lo model.

  • Ground improvement technique of cement stabilization via Deep Soil Mixing with dry cement is gaining popularity, particularly in Japan and other parts of Southeast Asia and in Scandinavia. Cement can be mixed with deep soft clay deposits, typical of marine environments, to improve the bearing capacity and/or reduce the compressibility of the material so that an otherwise poor site can be developed. However, the strength/deformation behaviour and resulting soil structure of the clay-cement mixture is presently not well understood with respect to both dry and wet mix methods. An extensive laboratory test was carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of kaolin-cement, with some brief examination of the effects of curing environment. Laboratory tests include triaxial tests, unconfined compression tests, isotropic consolidation testis and oedometer tests. Cement contents up to 10 percent were considered and water curing was employed. Samples were cured for 7 to 112 days while submerged in distilled water. Conventional laboratory tests were also performed. In this paper, the laboratory testing program is described and various sample preparation techniques are discussed. Preliminary triaxial compression test results and trends at varying moisture contents, cement contents, confining pressures and curing times will be presented.

  • Pneumatic motors are quite attractive for many applications because of their competitive price, light-weight, easy assembly, safety in hazardous areas as well as other features, such as a good force/weight ratio and operation in exceptionally harsh environments. In contrast to these advantages, pneumatic motors have limited use in applications, particularly those requiring a fast and precise response. These undesirable characteristics are due to the high compressibility of air and from the nonlinearities in pneumatic systems. This paper presents the sliding mode controller based on 3-loop(SMCB3L), which increases the load stiffness to control the rotation angle of a pneumatic motor. The characteristics for the step responses and load disturbances of the proposed controller were compared with the conventional PID controller. The experimental results showed that a properly designed SMCB3L is capable of high positioning accuracy within ${\pm}0.05mm$. Furthermore, the load stiffness of the SMCB3L can be improved 3.5 fold compared to that of PID controllers.

  • The flow characteristics of supersonic ejectors is often subject to compressibility, unsteadiness and shock wave systems. The numerical works carried out thus far have been of one-dimensional analyses or some Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) which has been applied to only a very simplified configuration. For the design of effective ejector-pump systems the effects of secondary mass flow on the supersonic ejector flow should be fully understood. In the present work the supersonic ejector-pump flows with a secondary mass flow were simulated using CFD. A fully implicit finite volume scheme was applied to axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The standard two-equation turbulence model was employed to predict turbulent stresses. The results obtained showed that the flow characteristics of constant area mixing tube types were nearly independent of the secondary flow rate, but the flow fields of ejector system with the second-throat were strongly dependent on the secondary flow rate due to the effect of the back pressure near the primary nozzle exit.

  • Factors affecting on dewatering characteristics of anaerobically digested or/and elutriated sludges were examined from 15 January 1982 to 30 April 1982, results obtained were as follows 1. Sludges, either anaerobically digested or/and elutriated sludges, which were produced at the Joong Rang Cheon Sewage Treatment Plant wore found to be compressive in its nature, coefficient of compressibility ranged from 0.83 for unelutriated and 1.10 for elutriated. 2. Dosage of FeC13 for the anaerobically digested sludges were difficult to establish for the most favorable dosage rate, though the filterability indicated linear improvement with increased dosage from dosing rate excess of over 15% in terms of dry solids by weight, under the conditions of this examination. Optimum filterability were obtained with 9~11% of $FeCl_3$ for elutriated sludges, and required CaO, as aids, were appeared to be 2.5~3.5 times that of the $FeCl_3$ at that point by weight. 3. The specific resistances for anaerobically digested sludges showed higher value than the elutriated one, being $11 \times 10^{12} ~ 20 \times 10^{12}$ cm/g with no chemical conditioning, and $2 \times 10^{12} ~ 11 \times 10^{12}$ cm/g with conditioned ($FeCl_3$ + CaO) contrast to $0.5 \times 10^{12} ~ 2.0 \times 10cm/g$ for the elutriated. 4. The strength of the alkalinities before and after elutriation were measured to 10,000 ~ 15,000 mg/l and 1,500 ~ 2,000mg/l respectively. These alkalinities affected greatly on the filterabilities together with concentration of the organic matters in the sludges. 5. The yields with 11% $FeCl_3$, by weight to the DS, on the elutriated sludges averaged to $14.7 kg/m^2.hr$, and $3.2kg/m^2.hr$ for unelutriated sludges. Which was 4.6 times of not elutriated sludges. Elutriated sludges without chemical conditioner added showed much better filterabilities than with 15% of $FeCl_3$ added to the anaerobically digested and unelutriated sludges.

  • The compression index, representing the compressibility of clay, is generally obtained from the consolidation test, or predicted by empirical correlations using soil properties. However, empirical methods have regional limitations, because the compression index is affected not only by soil properties but also by site characteristics, such as deposition conditions and stress history. In this study, a method evaluating the compression index from typical soil properties is suggested using the characteristics of reconstituted clay. By analyzing the consolidation test results of Busan clay, the suggested method is verified, and the analysis of prediction error is carried out. It is shown that the proposed method evaluates the compression index more accurately than empirical methods previously suggested. The prediction errors occur by assumption, and are inversely proportional to $e_{cross}/e_0$, obviously.

  • A vacuum pressure method has been developed to solve many problems in the conventional surcharge method such as embankments, and its application has increased in the country. Recently, to control target settlements in the field, there have been many studies on the comparison of settlements between vacuum pressure method and surcharge load method in the same conditions. In this study, the settlement characteristics of soil subjected to vacuum pressure and surcharge pressure are discussed. The results indicate that if vacuum pressure is applied to the improvement of soft ground, there will be inward lateral displacement and the vacuum pressure will induce generally less settlement than a surcharge load of the same magnitude. The range of settlement reduction ratio is 0.54~0.67 based on Hooke's law, 0.91 based on field cases, 0.81 based on laboratory oedometer tests, 0.75 based on the theory of elasticity and coefficient of volumetric compressibility and 0.77~0.93 in its recent applications to the thick soft ground.
