Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a sustainable desalination technology to solve the water and energy problems faced by the modern society. In particular, the surface wetting properties of the membrane have been recognized as a key parameter to determine the performance of the MD system. In this study, a novel surface modification technique was developed to induce a Janus-type hydrophilic/hydrophobic layer on the membrane surface. The hydrophilic layer was created on a porous PVDF membrane by vapor phase polymerization of the pyrrole monomer, forming a thin coating of polypyrrole on the membrane walls. A rigid polymeric coating layer was created without compromising the membrane porosity. The hydrophilic coating was then followed by the in-situ growth of siloxane nanoparticles, where the condensation of organosilane provided quick loading of hydrophobic layers on the membrane surface. The composite layers of dual coatings allowed systematic control of the surface wettability of porous membranes. By the virtue of the photothermal property of the hydrophilic polypyrrole layer, the desalination performance of the coated membrane was tested in a solar MD system. The wetting properties of the dual-layer were further evaluated in a direct-contact MD module, exploring the potential of the Janus membrane structure for effective and low-energy desalination.
This paper investigated acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in association with various fracture processes of glass fiber reinforced plastic skin/ aluminum honeycomb core (GF-AH) hybrid composites under compressive and bending loads. Various failure modes such as skin layer fracture, skin/core interfacial fracture, and local plastic yield buckling and cell wall adhesive fracture occurring in the honeycomb cell wall were classified through the fracture identification in association with the AE frequency and amplitude analysis. The distribution of the event-rate in which it has a high amplitude showed a procedure of cell wall adhesive fracture, skin/core interfacial debonding and fiber breakage, whereas distribution of different peak frequencies indicated the plastic deformation of aluminum cell wall and the friction between honeycomb walls. Consequently, the fracture behaviors of GF-AH hybrid composites could be characterized through a nondestructive evaluation employing the AE technique.
Grouted sleeve splice (GSS) is an effective type of connection applied in the precast concrete structures as it has the advantages of rapidly assembly and reliable strength. To decrease the weight and cost of vertical rebar connection in precast shear walls, a light-weight sleeve is designed according to the thick-cylinder theory. Mechanical behaviour of the light-weighted GSS is investigated through experimental analysis. Two failure modes, such as rebar fracture failure and rebar pull-out failure, are found. The load-displacement curves exhibit four different stages: elastic stage, yield stage, strengthening stage, and necking stage. The bond strength between the rebar and the grout increases gradually from outer position to inner position of the sleeve, and it reaches the maximum value at the centre of the anchorage length. A finite element model predicting the mechanical properties of the light-weighted GSS is developed based on the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model and the Brittle Cracking (BC) model. The effect of the rebar anchorage length is significant, while the increase of the thickness of sleeve and the grout strength are not very effective. A model for estimating ultimate load, including factors of inner diameter of sleeves, anchorage length, and rebar diameter, is proposed. The proposed model shows good agreement with various test data.

When restoring endodontically treated teeth is the mismatch between fiber post size and post space diameter, the resin cement layer is excessively thick in post space and voids are likely to form in it, thus predisposing to de-bonding. The method to overcome this problem is to reline the fiber post with composite resin. This individual anatomic post improves the adaptation of post to root walls and decreases the resin cement thickness. The purpose of this in vivo study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength of fiber post according to relining procedure and luting agents type used for simplicity of clinical procedure. Forty-two extracted teeth were divides into six groups.(n=7) A1: relined fiber post cemented with Luxacore/all-bons 2, A2: non-relined fiber post cemented with Luxacore/all-bond2, B1: relinind fiber post cemented with Calibra/XP-bond, B2: non-relined fiber post cemented with Calibra/XP-bond, C1: relined fiber post cemented with RelyX Unicem, C2: non-relined fiber post cemented with RelyX Unicem Push-out bond strength was affected by interaction between relining procedure and luting agent type. Relined fiber post presented higher push-out bond strength value than non-relined fiber post and statically significant differences(p<0.05) Cementation with RelyX Unicem showed significantly higher bond strength than other luting agents(p<0.05).

Recently, the use of TiO2 as a phtocatalyst has been diversely investigated due to its excellent durability performance and high photocatalytic reaction efficiency. Active researches have particularly focused on the development of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites in order to remove the atmospheric pollutants. Furthermore, the potential utilization of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites as road accessories such as tunnels, road median separators and soundproof walls in the form of tiles, blocks and structural components has been widely examined. In this regard, a thorough understanding on the material characteristics of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites should be preceded. The present overview article, therefore, revisits previous studies of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites and summarizes their various physicochemical properties and atmospheric pollutants removal performance.
Competition will usually develop between the opposing walls as the restorative resin shrinks during polymerization. Magnitude of this phenomenon may be depended upon cavity configuration and volume. The purpose of this sturdy was to evaluate the effect of cavity configuration and volume on microleakage of composite resin restoration that has margins on the enamel site only. The labial enamel of forty bovine teeth was ground using a model trimmer to expose a flat enamel surface. Four groups with cylindrical cavities were defined, according to volume and configuration factor(Depth x Diameter / C-factor) - Group I : 1.5 mm ${\times}$ 2.0 mm / 4.0, Group II : 1.5 mm ${\times}$ 6.0 mm / 2.0, Group III : 2.Omm ${\times}$ 1.72 mm / 5.62, Group IV : 2.0 mm ${\times}$ 5.23 mm / 2.54. After treating with fifth-generation one-bottle adhesive - BC Plus$^{TM}$ (Vericom, AnYang, Korea), cavities were bulk flted with microhybrid composite resin - Denfill$^{TM}$ (Vericom). Teeth were stored in distilled water for one day at room temperature and were finished and polished with Sof-Lex system. Specimens were thermocycled 500 times between 5$^{\circ}$C and 55$^{\circ}$C for 30 second at each temperature. Teeth were isolated with two layers of nail varnish except the restoration surface and 1 mm surrounding margins. Electrical conductivity (${\mu}$A) was recorded in distilled water by electrochemical method. Microleakage scores were compared and analyzed using two-way ANOVA at 95% level. The results were as follows: 1. Small cavity volume showed lower microleakage score than large one, however, there was no statistically significant difference. 2. There was no relationship between cavity configuration and microleakage. Factors of cavity configuration and volume did not affect on microleakage of resin restorations with enamel margins only.

Recently, self-etching adhesive system have been developed and bonding procedures simplified into one or two steps, which are simultaneously applied to both enamel and dentin. These systems are easy to use and have the potential for good clinical success. The purpose of this study is to evaluate in vitro the microleakage on the cementum/dentin and enamel walls in composite resin restoration of Class V cavities, regarding the use of different adhesive systems. 30 human premolars were divided into 3 groups. A standardized Class V preparation was prepared on the buccal and lingual surface of each premolar. The preparation were made parallel to the cementoenamel junctions, with the gingival half of the preparation extending 1mm apical to the cementoenamel junction. After adhesive system was applied to teeth as manufacture's recommendation, hybrid resin composite was filled in bulk into the preparation and light polymerized according to manufacturer's recommendations. Specimen were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 5 days and thermocycled 1000 times ($5^{\circ}C{\pm}2^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$, then immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution for 12 hours. After sectioning mesio distally through the restorations, the degree of dye penetration was scored under a stereomicroscope at ${\times}\;25$ magnification. The data were analyzed statistically using t-test and one-way ANOVA. The results were as follows: ${\cdot}$ There is no adhesive system which can prevent microleakage perfectly. ${\cdot}$ There is significant difference in microleakage between enamel margin and dentin margin (p<0.0001). ${\cdot}$ In enamel margin, self-etching primer systems did not show any significant difference comparing total-etching system. In denin margin, self-etching primer systems did not show any significant difference comparing one-bottle adhesive system used in combination with total-etching.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cavity shape, bond quality of bonding agent and volume of resin composite on shrinkage stress developed at the cavity floor. This was done by measuring the shear bond strength with respect to iris materials (cavity shape , adhesive-coated dentin as a high C-factor and Teflon-coated metal as a low C-factor), bonding agents (bond quality: $Scotchbond^{TM}$ Multi-purpose and Xeno III) and iris hole diameters (volume; 1mm or 3mm in $diameter{\times}1.5mm$ in thickness). Ninety-six molars were randomly divided into 8 groups ($2{\times}2{\times}2$ experimental setup). In order to simulate a Class I cavity, shear bond strength was measured on the flat occlusal dentin surface with irises. The iris hole was filled with Z250 restorative resin composite in a bulk-filling manner. The data was analyzed using three-way ANOVA and the Tukey test. Fracture mode analysis was also done When the cavity had high C-factor, good bond quality and large volume, the bond strength decreased significantly The volume of resin composite restricted within the well-bonded cavity walls is also be suggested to be included in the concept of C-factor, as well as the cavity shape and bond quality. Since the bond quality and volume can exaggerate the effect of cavity shape on the shrinkage stress developed at the resin-dentin bond, resin composites must be filled in a method, which minimizes the volume that can increase the C-factor.

In case of retrofitting a concrete structure subjected to blast load by using retrofit materials such as FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), appropriate ductility as well as raising stiffness must be obtained. But the previous approximate and simplified models, which have been generally used in the design and analysis of structures subjected to blast load, cannot accurately consider effects on retrofit materials. Problems on the accuracy and reliability of analysis results have also been pointed out. In addition, as the response of concrete and reinforcement on dynamic load is different from that on static load, it is not appropriate to use material properties defined in the previous static or quasi-static conditions to in calculating the response on the blast load. In this study, therefore, an accurate HFPB (high fidelity physics based) finite element analysis technique, which includes material models considering strength increase, and strain rate effect on blast load with very fast loading velocity, has been suggested using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. Through the suggested analysis technique, the behavior on the blast load of retrofitted concrete walls using CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) have been analyzed, and the retrofit capacity analysis has also been carried out by comparing with the analysis results of a wall without retrofit. As a result of the analysis, the retrofit capacity showing an approximate $26{\sim}28%$ reduction of maximum deflection, according to the retrofit, was confirmed, and it is judged ate suggested analysis technique can be effectively applicable in evaluating effectiveness of retrofit materials and techniques.
CAD/CAM-fabricated ceramic restorations nowadays are used as alternatives of amlagam and posterior composite resin restorations, especially in the cases of inlay restorations. But the reported results on marginal and internal fit of CAD/CAM-fabricated ceramic inlay have showed considerable difference. In this study, to evaluate the marginal and internal fit of CEREC2-fabricated ceramic inlay restoration and to compare with the fit of gold inlay and amalgam restoration, standardized Class II MO cavities were prepared in forty extracted caries-free human premolars. The teeth with prepared cavities were divided into 4 groups of ten teeth each. In group 1, CEREC2-fabricated ceramic inlays were treated with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus(SMP plus) and cemented with Scotchbond Resin Cement. In group 2, casted gold inlays were cemented in the same method as in group 1. In group 3, casted gold inlays were cemented with zinc-phosphate cement. And in group 4, the prepared cavities were restored with amalgam. Restored teeth were thermocycled, stored in 1% methylene blue for 24 hours, and sectioned faciolingually and mesiodistally using EXAKT. Sectioned surfaces were observed with stereomicroscope and the gaps were measured at 9 points of mesiodistally sectioned surface and 7 points of faciolingually sectioned surface. The measured data were treated by Kruskal-Wallis one way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test. 1. The differences among measured gaps at each points were statistically significant for 4 experimental groups (P<0.05). 2. There were statistically significant differences in the measured gaps at each points between group 1 and group 2, group 1 and group 3, group 1 and group 4, group 2 and group 4, and group 3 and group 4 (P<0.05). 3. There were not statistically significant differences in the measured gaps at each points between group 2 and group 3 (P>0.05). 4. In the cases of inlay restorations(group 1, group 2, group 3), the gaps at internal line angle(distopulpal, axiogingival, faciopulpal, linguopulpal line angle) had a tendency to increase. In the cases of amalgam restorations(group 4), the gaps at occlusal margin, gingival margin and axiogingival line angle were greater than those at the other parts of cavities. 5. In CEREC2-fabricated ceramic inlays which were treated with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus and cemented with Scotchbond Resin Cement, the mean gaps were $111{\mu}m$ at cavity margins, $168{\mu}m$ at vertical walls of cavities, $225{\mu}m$ at internal line angles and $123{\mu}m$ at cavity floors.
