In this study, polyurethane-silica composite foams were synthesized to analyze thermal insulation characteristics and mechanical properties. In order to synthesize polyurethane-silica composite foams, polyester-silica composite polyols were first synthesized via a polymerization reaction with silica sol, dicarboxylic acid and glycol in monomer state. Physical properties of polyurethane-silica composite foams synthesized using the composite polyols were analyzed. From the thermal conductivity analysis, no significant differences among HPUF0, HPUF1, HPUF3 and HPUF5 were found. The compressive strength of polyurethane-silica composite foams increased as the silica content increased. The mechanical property of HPUF5 was also about 25% higher than that of HPUF0.
The engineering properties of composite silicate grout materials that were developed recently were analyzed. In this laboratory tests, OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) was mainly used as grout materials. Moreover, the properties of composite silica, silica sol and sodium silicate (No.3) acting as coagulating agent were analyzed and compared with each other. For the purpose of finding the engineering properties of composite silicate grout materials, various physical and chemical tests were performed : naked eye measurement, photographing by using SEM, uniaxial compression test and in-situ application test. A series of test results showed that the strength of composite silicate grout materials was about 3~6 times that of ordinary sodium silicate grout materials in 6~24hr. Especially, based on the evaluation of the application of JS-CGM grout to the construction fields, composite silicate grout would be very effective in reducing the coefficient of permeability.
A sol-gel derived carbon composite electrodes (CCEs) were fabricated by mixing horseradish peroxidase (HRP), sol of tetraethoxysilane (TESO), and graphite powder. The HRP solution was added to the sol solution of TEOS, and then graphite powder was added to this mixture. The resulting carbon ceramic network effectively encapsulated HRP and shows a catalytic reduction starting at -0.2 V for $H_2O_2$. The optimum conditions for $H_2O_2$determination have been characterized with respect to the enzyme loading ratio and pH. The linear range and detection limit of $H_2O_2$ detection were from 0.2 mM to 2.2 mM and 0.035 mM, respectively. The common electroactive interferences such as ascorbic acid, acetaminophene, and uric acid were not affected upon the response to $H_2O_2$ at the HRP biosensor due to low detection potential.
The physicochemical properties such as surface hardness, solvent mechanical wear resistance, and resistance to scratch properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin film prepared by vapor phase polymerization (VPP) was effectively improved by post-treatment of various metal alkoxide sol solutions. Metal oxide layer derived from sol-gel process of metal alkoxide was generated on the PEDOT thin film layer by VPP, resulting in improving mechanical properties of the conductive thin films without any deterioration of their original surface resistance. Several kinds of silicone and titanium alkoxide derivatives with various functional groups were used as metal alkoxide sol sources. Among them, PEDOT-metal oxide composite thin film derived tetraethyl orthosilicate showed the best performance in the terms of surface resistance, transmittance, and various physicochemical properties. The effect of metal alkoxide content in washing solution, oxidant content and drying temperature have been investigated in order to optimize the various properties of PEDOT-metal oxide composite thin film.

Absorption and luminescence characteristics of disperse red-19 (DR-19) and $TiO_2$ composite have been investigated with various poling electric field strengths. Two step synthetic processes were employed to employ the DR-19 to the $TiO_2$ sol-gel. Firstly, urethane bond formation between DR-19 (-OH) and 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICPTES, -N=C=O) performed (ICPDR) prior incorporation to the $TiO_2$ sol-gel. Secondary, the hydrolysis of the ethoxy group from the ICPTES and condensation reaction between silanol groups from ICPTES and $TiO_2$ sol-gel were performed. The ICPDR and $TiO_2$ sol-gel ($DRTiO_2$) were mixed and stirred for several days. The composite was coated to the ITO coated glass substrate. Corona poling were performed before drying the composite with various electric field strengths. The absorption intensity decreased with the increase of the poling field strength, which resulted in the increase of poling efficiency. The photoluminescence also decreased as the poling field strength increased. There is long luminescence tail for the poled $DRTiO_2$ film compared with unpoled $DRTiO_2$ film. The luminescence long tail indicates that the self-trapped excitons and polarons were generated when the $DRTiO_2$ film was poled with electric field.
Two types of polyimide/silica composite films were prepared using sol-gel method through hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with the polyamic acid (PAA) and end-capped PAA solution. Samples were characterized by the means of differential thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, universal test, impedance analyzer, chemical resistance test, etc. All of the PAA/silanol solutions heat-treated at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 6h were transformed to polyimide/silica composites. It has been demonstrated that the properties of polyimide/silica composites were affected by the amount of silica addition and the bend type existed between polyimide and silica.
The effect of $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding on preparation of zirconia/alumina gel fragment prepared by sol-gel processing was characterized through XRD, SEM, TG/DTA and IR analysis. Aluminum isopropoxide and zirconium butoxide were used as starting materials. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding restrained grain growth of alumina and zirconia, and decreased tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation of zirconia on cooling. Therefore, fine zirconia-toughened alumina composite having the relative sintered density of about 98% of theoretical at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h could be obtained.

In this study, nanocomposite layer composed of PMMA-co-MMA and $TiO_2$ was prepared by sol-gel process using TTIP as a precursor and was utilized as a gate insulator of OTFTs. The composite insulator provides the lower threshold voltage and the enhanced sub threshold slope of OTFTs mainly due to its higher dielectric constant than that of the bare PMMA-co-MMA. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the sol-gel process can open an interesting direction for the fabrication of high-performance OTFTs, and contribute for OTFTs to be feasible for real applications.
10 wt.% and 20 wt.%$Li-TiO_2$ composite powders are synthesized by a sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide and $Li_2CO_3$ as precursors. The as-received amorphous 10 wt.%$Li-TiO_2$ composite powders crystallize into the anatase-type crystal structure upon calcination at $450^{\circ}C$, which then changes to the rutile phase at $750^{\circ}C$. The asreceived 20 wt%$Li-TiO_2$ composite powders, on the other hand, crystallize into the anatase-type structure. As the calcination temperature increases, the anatase $TiO_2$ phase gets transformed to the $LiTiO_2$ phase. The peaks for the samples obtained after calcination at $900^{\circ}C$ mainly exhibit the $LiTiO_2$ and $Li_2TiO_3$ phases. For a comparison of the photocatalytic activity, 10 wt.% and 20 wt.% $Li-TiO_2$ composite powders calcined at $450^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, and $750^{\circ}C$ are used. The 20 wt.%$Li-TiO_2$ composite powders calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ show excellent efficiency for the removal of methylorange.
$ZrO_2$ and Al-Zr composite oxide film was prepared by vacuum assisted sol-gel dip coating method and anodizing. $ZrO_2$ films annealed above $400^{\circ}C$ have tetragonal structure. $ZrO_2$ layers inside etch pits were successfully coated from the $ZrO_2$ sol. The double layer structures of samples were obtained after being anodized at 100 V to 600 V. From the TEM images, it was found that the outer layer was $Al_2O_3$, the inner layer was multi-layer of $ZrO_2$, Al-Zr composite oxide and Al hydrate. The capacitance of $ZrO_2$ coated foil exhibited about 28.3% higher than that of non-coating foil after being anodized at 100 V. The high capacitance of $ZrO_2$ coated foils anodized at 100 V can be attributed to the relatively high percentage of inner layer in total thickness. The electrical properties, such as withstanding voltage and leakage current of coated and non-coated Al foils showed similar values. From the results, $ZrO_2$ and Al-Zr composite oxide is promising to be used as the partial dielectric of high voltage capacitor to increase the capacitance.
