In the present study, a first order shear deformable Loop-subdivision triangular element which can handle transverse shear deformation of moderately thick shell and composite laminated or sandwich shells are developed. The developed element is more general than the previous one based on classical shell theory, since it includes the effect of transverse shell deformation and has standard five degrees of freedom per node. The quartic box spline function is employed as the interpolation basis function. Numerical examples for the benchmark static shell problems are analyzed to assess the performance of the developed subdivision shell element and locking trouble.
In this paper, dynamic buckling of truncated conical shell made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is studied. In aerospace industries, this category of structures is utilized extensively due to wide range of engineering applications. To calculate the effective material properties of the nanocomposite, The Mori-Tanaka model is applied. Also, the motion equations are derived with the assistance of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), Hamilton's principle and energy method. Besides, In order to solve motion equations and analyze dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure, mixed model of differential quadrature method (DQM) and Bolotin's method is used. Moreover, investigation of the different parameters effects such as geometrical parameters and volume fraction of CNTs on the analysis of the DIR of the structure is done. In accordance with the obtained results, the DIR will occur at higher frequencies by increasing the volume fraction of CNTs.

This paper deals with the dynamic stability of embedded functionally graded (FG)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-reinforced micro cylindrical shells. The structure is subjected to harmonic non-uniform temperature distribution and 2D magnetic field. The CNT reinforcement is either uniformly distributed or FG along the thickness direction where the effective properties of nano-composite structure are estimated through Mixture low. The viscoelastic properties of structure are captured based on the Kelvin-Voigt theory. The surrounding viscoelastic medium is considered nonhomogeneous with the spring, orthotropic shear and damper constants. The material properties of cylindrical shell and the viscoelastic medium constants are assumed temperature-dependent. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) or Mindlin theory in conjunction with Hamilton's principle is utilized for deriving the motion equations where the size effects are considered based on Eringen's nonlocal theory. Based on differential quadrature (DQ) and Bolotin methods, the dynamic instability region (DIR) of structure is obtained for different boundary conditions. The effects of different parameters such as volume percent and distribution type of CNTs, mode number, viscoelastic medium type, temperature, boundary conditions, magnetic field, nonlocal parameter and structural damping constant are shown on the DIR of system. Numerical results indicate that the FGX distribution of CNTs is better than other considered cases. In addition, considering structural damping of system reduces the resonance frequency.
Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted considerable attention as a promising candidate for next-generation power sources due to their high theoretical energy density, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, the poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and its insoluble discharging products (Li2S2/Li2S), large volume changes, severe self-discharge, and dissolution of lithium polysulfide intermediates result in rapid capacity fading, low Coulombic efficiency, and safety risks, hindering Li-S battery commercial development. In this study, a three-dimensionally (3D) connected hierarchical porous carbon framework (HPCF) derived from waste sunflower seed shells was synthesized as a sulfur host for Li-S batteries via a chemical activation method. The natural 3D connected structure of the HPCF, originating from the raw material, can effectively enhance the conductivity and accessibility of the electrolyte, accelerating the Li+/electron transfer. Additionally, the generated micropores of the HPCF, originated from the chemical activation process, can prevent polysulfide dissolution due to the limited space, thereby improving the electrochemical performance and cycling stability. The HPCF/S cell shows a superior capacity retention of 540 mA h g-1 after 70 cycles at 0.1 C, and an excellent cycling stability at 2 C for 700 cycles. This study provides a potential biomass-derived material for low-cost long-life Li-S batteries.
Enhanced lower order shear deformation theory is developed in this study. Generally, lower order theories are not adequate to predict accurate deformation and stress distribution through the thickness of laminated plate. For the accurate prediction of detailed stress and deformation distributions through the thickness, higher order zigzag theories have been proposed. However, in most cases, simplified zigzag higher order theory requires $C_1$, shape functions in finite element implementation. In commercial FE softwares, $C_1$, shape functions are not so common in plate and shell analysis. Thus zigzag theories are useful for the highly accurate prediction of thick composite behaviors but they are not practical in the sense that they cannot be used conveniently in the commercial package. In practice, iso-parametric $C_0$ plate model is the standard model for the analysis and design of composite laminated plates and shells. Thus in the present study, an enhanced lower order shear deformation theory is developed. The proposed theory requires only $C_0$ shape function in FE implementation. The least-squared energy error between the lower order theory and higher order theory is minimized. An enhanced lower order shear deformation theory(ELSDT) in this paper is proposed for smart structure under complex loadings. The ELSDT is constructed by the strain energy transformation and fully coupled mechanical, electric loading cases are studied. In order to obtain accurate prediction, zigzag in-plane displacement and transverse normal deformation are considered in the deformation Held. In the electric behavior, open-circuit condition as well as closed-circuit condition is considered. Through the numerous examples, the accuracy and robustness of present theory are demonstrated.
This paper deals with the low velocity impact response and dynamic stresses of composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with compressible or incompressible core. Impacts are assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet and the interaction between the impactor and the structure is simulated using a new equivalent three-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) spring-mass-damper (SMD) model. The displacement fields of core and face sheets are considered by higher order and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), respectively. Considering continuity boundary conditions between the layers, the motion equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal incorporating the curvature, in-plane stress of the core and the structural damping effects based on Kelvin-Voigt model. In order to obtain the contact force, the displacement histories and the dynamic stresses, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The effects of different parameters such as number of the layers of the face sheets, boundary conditions, semi vertex angle of the cone, impact velocity of impactor, trapezoidal shape and in-plane stresses of the core are examined on the low velocity impact response of STCS. Comparison of the present results with those reported by other researchers, confirms the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that increasing the impact velocity of the impactor yields to increases in the maximum contact force and deflection, while the contact duration is decreased. In addition, the normal stresses induced in top layer are higher than bottom layer since the top layer is subjected to impact load. Furthermore, with considering structural damping, the contact force and dynamic deflection decrees.
CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) of the advanced composite materials as structural materials for vehicle, has a wide application in light-weigh structural materials of airplanes, ships and automobiles because of high strength and stiffness, However, there is a design variable to be considered in practical application of the laminate composite materials, these materials are vulnerable to transverse impact. This paper is to study the effects of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristics of composite laminate shell. They are stacked to $[0_3/90_3]S,\;[90_3/0_3]s\;and\;[0_2/90_3/0]s,\;[90_2/0_3/90]s$ and their interlaminar number two and four. They are manufactured to various curvature radius (R=100, 150, 200mm and $\infty$), When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the velocity of the steel ball was measured both before and after impact by determing the time for it to pass two ballistics-screen sensors located a known distance apart. The critical penetration energy of specimen A and B with less interfaces were a little higher than those of C and D. As the curvature increases, the critical penetration energy increases linearly because the resistance to the in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. The specimen A and C have higher critical penetration energy than B and D because of different stacking sequences. We examined crack length through a penetration test. For the specimen A with 2interfaces, the longest circumferential direction crack length were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B 4-interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length were observed on the second interface from the impact point.
Cylindrical shell structures buckle at service loads which are much lower than their associated theoretical buckling loads. The main source of this discrepancy is the presence of various imperfections which are created on the cylinder body during different processes as manufacturing, handling, assembling and machining. Many cylindrical shell structures are still designed against buckling based on the experimental data introduced by NASA SP-8007 as conservative lower bound curves. This study employed the numerical based Linear Buckling mode shape Imperfection (LBMI) method and modified it using a stochastic method to assess the effect of geometrical imperfections in more details on the buckling of cylindrical shells with and without the cutout. The comparison of results with those obtained from the numerical Simcple Perturbation Load Imperfection (SPLI) method for cylinders with and without cutout revealed a good correlation. The effect of two parameters of size and number of cutouts on the buckling load was investigated using the linear buckling and Modified LBMI methods. Results confirmed that in cylinders with a small cutout inserting geometrical imperfection using either SPLI or modified LBMI methods significantly reduced the value of the predicted buckling load. However, in cylinders with larger cutouts, the effect of the cutout is dominant, thus considering geometrical imperfection had a minor effect on the buckling loads predicted by both SPLI and modified LBMI methods. Furthermore, the modified LBMI method was employed to evaluate the combination effect of cutout numbers and size on the buckling load. It is shown that in small cutouts, an increasing in the cutout size up to a certain value resulted in a remarkable reduction of the buckling load, and beyond that limit, the buckling loads were constant against D/R ratios. In addition, the cutout number shows a more significant effect on decreasing the buckling load at small D/R ratios than large D/R ratios.
In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the seismic performance of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete-filled hollow core precast concrete columns (HPCC) constructed using steel ducts and rubber tubes. The outer shells of HPCC, with a hollow ratio of 47%, were fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes, respectively. Two combinations of shear studs & long threaded bars or cross-deformed bars & V-ties were employed to ensure the structural integrity of the old concrete (outer shell) and new CIP concrete. Up to a drift ratio of 3.8%, the hysteresis loop, yielding stiffness, dissipated energy, and equivalent damping ratio of the HPCC specimens were largely comparable to those of the solid columns. Besides the similarities in cyclic load-displacement responses, the strain history of the longitudinal bars and the transverse confinement of the three specimens also exhibited similar patterns. The measured maximum moment exceeded the predicted moment according to ACI 318 by more than 1.03 times. However, the load reduction of the HPCC specimen after reaching peak strength was marginally greater than that of the solid specimen. The energy dissipation and equivalent damping ratios of the HPCC specimens were 20% and 25% lower than those of the solid specimen, respectively. Taking into account the overall results, the structural behavior of HPCC specimens fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes is deemed comparable to that of solid columns. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the two combinations for securing structural integrity functioned as expected, and that rubber air-tubes can be effectively used to create well-shaped hollow sections.
