In this study, the stability of laminated homogeneous and non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells with freely supported edges under a uniform hydrostatic pressure is investigated. It is assumed that the composite material is orthotropic and the material properties depend only on the thickness coordinate. The basic relations, the modified Donnell type stability and compatibility equations have been obtained for laminated non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells. Applying Galerkin method to the foregoing equations, the expression for the critical hydrostatic pressure is obtained. The appropriate formulas for the single-layer and laminated, cylindrical and complete conical shells made of homogeneous and non-homogeneous, orthotropic and isotropic materials are found as a special case. Finally, effects of non-homogeneity, number and ordering of layers and variations of shell characteristics on the critical hydrostatic pressure are investigated.
This paper depicts the diagram of cylindrical shells as an essential idea. It centers around an outline of exploration and use of cylindrical shell in expansive current circumstance. In view of investigation of the current and prospect of model as a piece of present exploration work, a straightforward contextual analysis is examined with Love's shell theory based on Galerkin's method. The cylindrical shells are attached from one end of the cylindrical shells. The frequencies of ring support shells are investigated against the half axial wave mode. The frequencies increase on increasing the half axial wave mode. Also, the frequencies are downsized with ring supports. The software MATLAB is preferred to others because in this software computing coding is very easy to do. Just single command 'eig' furnishes shell frequencies and mode shapes by calculating eigenvalues and eigenvectors respectively. The shell vibration frequencies for cylindrical shells are compared with those results found in the open literature.

An efficient method was developed in this study to obtain optimal stacking sequences, thicknesses, and minimum weights of stiffened laminated composite shells under combined loading conditions and stiffener layouts using genetic algorithms (GAs) and finite element analyses. Among many parameters in designing composite laminates determining a optimal stacking sequence that may be formulated as an integer programming problem is a primary concern. Of many optimization algorithms, GAs are powerful methodology for the problem with discrete variables. In this paper the optimal stacking sequence was determined, which gives the maximum critical buckling load factor and the minimum weight as well. To solve this problem, both the finite element analysis by ABAQUS and the GA-based optimization procedure have been implemented together with an interface code. Throughout many parametric studies using this analysis tool, the influences of stiffener sizes and three different types of stiffener layouts on the stacking sequence changes were throughly investigated subjected to various combined loading conditions.

Thermal Buckling and free vibration analyses of multi-layered composite conical shells based on a layerwise displacement theory are performed. The Donnell's displacement-strain relationships of conical shell structure are applied. The natural frequencies are compared with the ones existing in the previous literature for laminated conical shells with several cone semi-vertex angles. Moreover, the thermal buckling behaviors of the laminated conical shell are investigated to consider the effect of the semi-vertex angle, subtended angle, and radius to thickness ratio on the structural stability.
The effects of boundary conditions on vibration characteristics for the ring stiffered composite cylindrical shells are investigated by theoretical and experimental method. In the theoretical procedure, the Love's thin shell theory combined with the discrete stiffener theory to consider the ring stiffening effect are adopted to derive the frequency equation. In experiment, the impact exciting method is used to obtain the vibraton results. Five different boundary conditions: clamped-clamped, simply supported-simply supported, free-free, clamped-free, clamped-simply supported are considered in this study.
A method for the analysis of free vibrations of steel and plain weave composite cylindrical shells with a longitudinal, interior rectangular plate is developed by using the receptance method. This method is based on the ratio of a deflection (or slope) response to a harmonic force(or moment) at the joint. In this study, after getting the free vibration characteristics of the simply supported plate and shell, the frequency equation of the combined system is obtained by considering the continuity condition at the joint between the plate and the shell. The numerical results are compared with published results and experiment results in order to show the validate of the formulation, and shown that the analytical results agreed with those from other methods. The effects of the location and the thickness of the plate on the natural frequencies are also investigated.

This paper investigates the parametric instability (PI) of multilayered composite conical shells (MLCCSs) under axial load periodically varying the time, using the first order shear deformation theory (FOSDT). The basic equations for the MLCCSs are derived and then the Galerkin method is used to obtain the ordinary differential equation of the motion. The equation of motion converted to the Mathieu-Hill type differential equation, in which the DI is examined employing the Bolotin's method. The expressions for left and right limits of dimensionless parametric instability regions (PIRs) of MLCCSs based on the FOSDT are obtained. Finally, the influence of various parameters; lay-up, shear deformations (SDs), aspect ratio, as well as loading factors on the borders of the PIRs are examined.
A numerical method is presented in this paper, for buckling analysis of thin arbitrary stiffened composite cylindrical shells under axial compression. The stiffeners can be placed inside and outside of the shell. The shell and stiffeners are operated as discrete elements, and their interactions are taking place through the compatibility conditions along their intersecting lines. The governing equations of motion are obtained based on Koiter's theory and solved by utilizing the principle of the minimum potential energy. Then, the buckling load coefficient and the critical buckling load are computed by solving characteristic equations. In this formulation, the elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of a single curved strip of the shell and stiffeners can be located anywhere within the shell element and in any direction are provided. Moreover, five stiffened composite shell specimens are made and tested under axial compression loading. The reliability of the presented method is validated by comparing its numerical results with those of commercial software, experiments, and other published numerical results. In addition, by using the ANSYS code, a 3-D finite element model that takes the exact geometric arrangement and the properties of the stiffeners and the shell into consideration is built. Finally, the effects of Poisson's ratio, shell length-to-radius ratio, shell thickness, cross-sectional area, angle, eccentricity, torsional stiffness, numbers and geometric configuration of stiffeners on the buckling of stiffened composite shells with various end conditions are computed. The results gained can be used as a meaningful benchmark for researchers to validate their analytical and numerical methods.
The shell structures with composite materials have the advantages in strength, corrosion resistance, and weight reduction. The objective of this study is to analyze anisotropic composite circular cylindrical shells with shear deformation theory. In applying numerical methods to solve differential equations of anisotropic shells, this paper use finite difference method. The accuracy of the numerical method can be improved by taking higher order of interval ${\Delta}$ to reduce error. This study compares the results of finite difference method with the results of ANSYS based on finite element method. Several numerical examples show the advantages of the stiffness increasement when the composite materials aroused. Therefore, it is expected that results of this study give various guides for change of the subtended angles, load cases, boundary conditions, and side-to-thickness ratio.
This study aims to accurately predict the first ply failure loads of laminated composite hypar shell roofs with different boundary conditions. The geometrically nonlinear finite element method (FEM) is used to analyse different symmetric and anti-symmetric, cross and angle ply shells. The first ply failure loads are obtained through different well-established failure criteria including Puck's criterion along with the serviceability criterion of deflection. The close agreement of the published and present results for different validation problems proves the correctness of the finite element model used in the present study. The effects of edge conditions on first ply failure behavior are discussed critically from practical engineering point of view. Factor of safety values and failure zones are also reported to suggest design and non-destructive monitoring guidelines to practicing engineers. Apart from these, the present study indicates the rank wise relative performances of different shell options. The study establishes that the angle ply laminates in general perform better than the cross ply ones. Among the stacking sequences considered here, three layered symmetric angle ply laminates offer the highest first ply failure load. The probable failure zones on the different shell surfaces, identified in this paper, are the areas where non-destructive health monitoring may be restricted to. The contributions made through this paper are expected to serve as important design aids to engineers engaged in composite hypar shell design and construction.
