We prepared hydrophobic silica particles by a sol-gel process from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), followed by coupling the reaction with octyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) or hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) under various reaction conditions. We confirmed the extent of silica surface modification with organic compounds by SEM-EDS, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. The silica particles obtained after the hydrolysis reaction of TEOS in ethanol at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and the coupling reaction with OTMS for 2 h at the same temperature displayed the optimum performance in terms of the dispersity in an organic solvent and the surface roughness of films composited with epoxy resins. The oxygen permeability of the composite film with modified-silica was 12% lower than that of using the film without modified-silica.
In this study, the conductive paste used in a wide range such as wiring in the electronic packaging field, the automobile industry, and electronic products is manufactured under various process conditions due to the simplicity of the process, and then the thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics are analyzed and simulation studies are conducted to optimize the process. to establish the conditions of the conductive paste manufacturing process. First, a conductive paste was prepared by setting various types of binder resin, an essential component of the conductive paste, and characteristics such as thermal conductivity, tensile strength, and elongation were analyzed. Among the binder resins, the conductive paste applied with a flexible epoxy material had the best physical properties, and a simulation study was conducted based on the physical property data base of the conductive face. As a result of the simulation, the best physical properties were exhibited when the Ag flake volume fraction was 60%.
Because polymer-based composites are lightweight and have excellent properties, their demand is growing rapidly as a way to fulfill properties that are difficult to achieve with a single material. As a result, there has been a lot of research on polymer nanocomposites, which are made by dispersing particles with a size of 1-100 nm in a polymer matrix. In addition, many nanocomposites using thermoplastic resins as matrix materials are being studied. In this study, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based nanocomposites containing organic nanoclays modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as interlayer materials were prepared. Among various nanoclays, vermiculite (VMT) has been studied to increase the mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric materials due to its low cost, abundant reserves and unique properties. However, the strong interlayer bonding of VMT has limited its utilization due to its poor exfoliation and dispersion performance within polymer matrices. In this study, the mechanical properties of the VMT content were confirmed by tensile tests, the dispersion of VMT particles in the PET matrix was evaluated by TEM cross-sectional images, and the nitrogen gas barrier properties were evaluated.

Objectives: This study compared the surface gloss (SG), gloss retention (GR), and color stability (CS) of 2 universal resin composites after chemical (CA) and mechanical (MA) aging. Materials and Methods: Twenty disc-shaped samples of G-ænial A'Chord (GC-Europe) and Filtek Universal (3M-ESPE) were polished with sequential abrasive papers. For CA, specimens were stored in 1 mL of 75% ethanol for 15 days at 37℃, and readings (SG, GR, and CS) were obtained at baseline and 5, 10, and 15 days. For MA, specimens were subjected to 10,750 simulated brushing cycles. SG and CS were evaluated after every 3,583 cycles. SG was measured with a glossmeter (geometrical configuration: 60°), and values were expressed in gloss units. Color was measured with a spectrophotometer using the CIE-L*a*b* color system. The Student's t-test, 1-way analysis of variance, and Scheffé test were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: G-ænial presented significantly higher SG values than Filtek (p = 0.02), with GR reductions of 5.2% (CA) and 5.3% (MA) for G-ænial and 7.6% (CA) and 7.2% (MA) for Filtek. The aging protocol had no statistically significant effect on SG or GR (p = 0.25) from baseline to the final readings. G-ænial-MA presented the lowest color difference (ΔE = 1.8), and G-ænial-CA and Filtek-CA had the largest changes (ΔE = 8.6 and ΔE = 11.8, respectively). Conclusion: G-ænial presented higher SG values and better CS. Both restorative materials demonstrated acceptable GR and CS. Aging protocols impacted these properties negatively.
Background: Resin-based dental materials release residual monomers or other substances from incomplete polymerization into the oral cavity, thereby causing adverse biological effects on oral tissue. 10-Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP), an acidic monomer containing dihydrogen phosphate and methacrylate groups, is the most commonly used component of resin-based dental materials, such as restorative composite resins, dentin adhesives, and resin cements. Although previous studies have reported the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility in various cultured cells, the effects of resin monomers on cellular aging have not been reported to date. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of the resin monomer 10-MDP on cellular senescence and inflamm-aging in vitro. Methods: After stimulation with 10-MDP, MC3T3-E1 osteoblast-like cells were examined for cell viability by WST-8 assay and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by flow cytometry. The protein and mRNA levels of molecular markers of aging were determined by western blotting and RT-PCR analysis, respectively. Results: Treatment with 0.05 to 1 mM 10-MDP for 24 hours reduced the survival of MC3T3-E1 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. The intracellular ROS levels in the 10-MDP-treated experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group. 10-MDP at a concentration of 0.1 mM increased p53, p16, and p21 protein levels. Additionally, an aging pattern was observed with blue staining due to intracellular senescence-associated beta-galactosidase activity. Treatment with 10-MDP increased the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-8, however their expression was decreased by mitogen-activated-protein-kinase (MAPK) inhibitors. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that the exposure of osteoblast-like cells to the dental resin monomer 10-MDP, increases the level of cellular senescence and the inflammatory response is mediated by the MAPK pathway.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of distance of light tip to resin surfaces and exposure time on the polymerization of surface and 2 mm subsurface of composite resins cured with two light sources; conventional halogen light (XL 3000, 3M, U.S.A.) and plasma arc light (Flipo, LOKKI, France) and compare the uniformity of polymerization from the center to the periphery of resin surfaces according to polymerization diameter cure with two light sources. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Difference of relative light intensity decrease in plasma arc light smaller than that of conventional halogen light(p<0.05). 2. In all groups, microhardness of top surfaces was decreased when distance of the light tip to resin surfaces is more than 2mm and increased according to increase of exposure time(p<0.05). 3. Difference of microhardness of the 2mm subsurface was rapidly decreased when distance of light tip to resin surfaces is more than 4mm(except, plasma arc light exposure time of 3 seconds). and the distance of light tip to resin surfaces and exposure time more affected 2mm subsurface rather than top surface(p<0.05). 4. Although exposure time was increased, difference of microhardness of the 2mm subsurface with the distance of light tip to resin surfaces was relatively high in groups between below 4mm and 6 mm(p<0.05). 5. Plasma arc light exposure time of 6 to 9 seconds produced microhardness values and microhardness change according to various distance similar to those produced with 40 to 80 second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 6. In all groups, microhardness was decreased gradually from the center to the periphery of resin surfaces(p<0.05).
Purpose. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different veneering methods on the tensile bond strength between polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and denture base resins. Materials and methods. A total of 80 PEKK T-shaped specimens were fabricated and the primer (Visio.link) was applied after airborne-particle abrasion with 110 ㎛ alumina oxide powder. According to the veneering method, the specimens were divided into four groups (n = 20) to be veneered with the gingival colored packable photopolymerized composite resin (SR Adoro); flowable photopolymerized composite resin, (Crea.lign); heat-polymerized resin (Vertex); and self-polymerized resin (ProBase Cold). Each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 10) according to the artificial thermal aging. After the tensile bond strength measurement via universal testing machine, the fracture sections of all specimens were observed. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test were used for the statistical analysis (α = .05). Results. The results of the two-way ANOVA showed statistically significant differences in the tensile bond strength according to the veneering method and artificial thermal aging of denture base resins (P<.001). The highest tensile bond strength showed in the packable photopolymerized resin group before and after the artificial thermal aging. The lowest tensile bond strength showed in the heat-polymerized resin group. The mixed and adhesive fracture showed in all groups. Conclusion. The veneering method and artificial thermal aging can influence in the tensile bond strength between the resin and PEKK. The artificial thermal aging can reduce the tensile bond strength.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of specimen dimension on the flexural properties and testing reliability of dental composite resin. The composite resin was prepared experimentally by mixing a resin matrix with silanated micrometer glass filler at 50 vol%. Flexural specimens with various dimension in specimen's width were fabricated by light curing using a split metal mold; $25{\times}2{\times}2mm$, $25{\times}2{\times}4mm$, $25{\times}2{\times}6mm$ in length ${\times}$ height ${\times}$ width. The flexural strength and modulus were determined according to ISO 4049 test protocol at a span length of 20 mm (normal-flexural strength; NFS). Another flexural test was conducted using mini-sized specimens ($12{\times}2{\times}2mm$, $12{\times}2{\times}4mm$, $12{\times}2{\times}6mm$) from the broken specimens at a span length of 10 mm (mini-flexural strength; MFS). Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Duncan's post-hoc test and the test reliability was evaluated by Weibull analysis. Results showed that there are generally no significant difference in flexural strength with the increase in the specimen width in NFS and MFS tests. However, the test reliability of flexural strength based on Weibull analysis was largely changed with the variables in the dimension of width and span length. The flexural modulus of NFS was increased as the dimension of specimens width increased while there was no trend in flexural modulus of MFS test. Overall results recommend that the evaluation of flexural properties and the reliability of dental composite resins should be performed with more than one test method.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of moistening and air-drying of acid conditioned dentin and enamel on the marginal microleakage. In this study, Class V cavity were prepared on both buccal and lingual surface of sixty extracted human premolars with cementum margin. These specimens were randomly devided into three groups and three dentin adhesives(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All bond 2, Prisma Universal Bond 3) were applied to each group. The specimens in each group were subdevided into four groups (Wet/primed, Dry/primed, Wet/not primed, Dry/not primed) and the etched dentin and enamel surface were treated these four surface treatments prior to the placement of a bonding agent or adhesive. Wet/primed group was simply blot-dried with a damp facial tissue before primer placement ; Dry/primed group was air dried for 30 seconds before the placement of a primer ; Wet/not primed group and Dry/not primed group were not primed after blot dried and air dried for 30 seconds each group. The bonding agent and composite resin were applied for each group. All specimens were exposed to 500 cycle of thermal stress. Specimens were placed in a silver nitrate solution and then sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration. The dye penetrations of the specimens were observed with a stereo microscope. The statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's multiple range test. The aspects of silver ion penetration into the resin/dentin interface were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. In all groups, the enamel margin showed significantly lower leakage value than the cementum margin (p<0.05). 2. Regardless of various surface treatment and dentin adhesives, there was no significant difference at the enamel margins (p>0.05). 3. At the dentin margins, the leakage values of Dry/not primed group showed significantly higher than that of the other groups (p<0.05). The leakage values of Wet/primed group showed significantly lower than that of the other groups, but, there was no significant difference between Wet group and Dry group. 4. There was no significantly difference between the dentin adhesives regarding the surface treatments in all groups(p>0.05). 5. On the backscatterd scanning electron microscopy observation, the penetration of the silver ion occured at the bonding resin/dentin interface. In the Wet/primed group, resindentin hybrid zone and resin penetration into the dentin was observed. The resin tags were compactively formed to a thickness of $3\sim4{\mu}m$ at the upper part of dentinal tubules. In the Dry/primed group, the thickness of the hybrid zone and the diameter, depth of the resin tags diminished. In the Non-primed groups, the hybrid zone was not identified and few resin tag was observed. There was the gap formation in the resin/dentin interface.
This study investigated the effects of microcapsules on mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite material containing self-healing microcapsules. To this end, tensile specimens and flexural specimens containing melamine-urea-formaldehyde (M-U-F) shell walled microcapsules with diameters of $70{\sim}130{\mu}m$ were manufactured. Varying amount of microcapsules in the specimens was considered: 0 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1.0 wt%. The tensile and flexural tests were conducted to evaluate mechanical properties of the specimens containing the microcapsules and the thermogravimetric analysis test was performed to evaluate the thermal stability of the specimens containing the microcapsules. The results show that the tensile strength of the specimens was sensitive to the amount of the microcapsules compared to the tensile modulus even though the tensile modulus of the specimens was not significantly affected by the amount of the microcapsules. However, reduction of the tensile strength was not linearly proportional to the amount of microcapsules; similar results were observed in the flexural test. The weight changes of the specimens containing the microcapsules, as a function of temperature, were similar to those specimens without microcapsules. The thermal stability of the specimens was not affected significantly by the microcapsules embedded in the specimens.
