  • In order to evaluate the effects of various finishing devices (Sof-Lex disc, diamond point, rubber point, fussure bur) on the surface roughness or two composite resins (Restodent, Enamelite 500), 15 specimens for each composite resin were made in the mold. Composite resin was prepared on the mixing pad by manufacturer's direction and filled in the mold cavity. A sheet of matrix is immediately placed on it and hold for 5 minutes to polymerize the resin. Surface finish was done after 10 minutes from the start of mixing. Scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometer were used to evaluate the surface roughness, porositites and striations of dental composite resins. The following results were observed; 1. The best finished surface was formed by celluloid matrix band. 2. Rubber point was excellent polishing device for Restodent. 3. Sof-Lex disc was the device of choice for polishing Enamelite 500. 4. Different polishing methods were effective for different composite resins. 5. SEMs of variously finished surfaces supported the profilometer measurements.

  • The smooth surface after polishing of composite resin contributes to the patient's comfort, and appearance and longevity of the restoration. This study was performed for the quantitative analysis of the effects of the various finishing and polishing instruments on the surface roughness and reflectivity of the microfill, and hybrid composite resins. Cylindrical specimens 2mm thick and 10mm in diameter of Silux Plus, Durafill VS ; Z100, Prisma TPH, Brilliant, and Herculite XR composite resin were polymerized under the matrix strip. 18 specimens for each composite resin materials were divided into 6 groups ; 5 experimental groups were abraded with # 600 sand paper to remove resin-rich layer, except control. Thereafter, using diamond bur(Mani Dia-Burs), carbide bur(E. T. carbide set 4159), rubber point(Composite polishing kit), aluminum-oxide disk(Sof-Lex disk), polishing paste(Enhance system) ; each specimen was polished to its best achievable surface according to manufacturer's directions. Final polished surfaces were evaluated for the surface roughness with profilometer(${\alpha}$-step 200, Tencor instruments, USA) and for the reflectivity with image analyser(Omniment Image Analyser, Buehler, USA). The results were as follows. 1. Polishing paste or aluminum-oxide disk finish in the microfill, and hybrid composite resins was as smooth as matrix strip finish on the surface roughness test. 2. Polishing paste or aluminum-oxide disk finish in the microfill ; polishing paste finish in the hybrid composite resins was as reflective as matrix strip finish on the refectivity test. 3. For the polishing paste, there were no significant differences between the composite resin materials on the surface roughness and refectivity tests. 4. For the aluminum-oxide disk, the best result was obtained with the microfill composite resin on the surface roughness and reflectivity test. 5. Diamond bur, carbide bur, and rubber point were inappropriate for the final polishing instruments.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the fluoride release and some mechanical properties including 3-point bending strength, amount of abrasion, surface hardness, water sorption/solubility and cytotoxicity of the newly developed composite resins containing 8, 16, 24 wt% $SrF_2$ glass filler (VF8, VF16, VF24) and four commercially available composite resins, Heliomolar(HE), Verdonfil(VE), Z100(ZH) and Aelitefil(AE). To investigate cytotoxic effect, agar overlay assay was done. Amount of fluoride released into distilled water was measured over a 62-days period from VF8, VF16, VF24 and HE. Results were as follows: 1. Experimental composite resins showed similar mechanical properties to commercial composite resins, but 3-point bending strength and surface hardness of experimental composite resins were inferior to ZH. 2. Over a 62-day Period, the amount of fluoride released was ordered: VF24>VF16>VF8>HE. In experimental composite resins, the amount of fluoride released was 9-23 times greater than HE and seemed to be proportional to the content of $SrF_2$ glass filler. 3. Experimental composite resins and all control composite resins showed mild cytotoxicity. This study showed significantly greater fluoride release from newly developed composite resins than control(HE) and addition of $SrF_2$ glass filler did not decrease mechanical properties or increase cytotoxicity of composite resin. The results from this study imply that newly developed composite resin have adequate mechanical properites, mild cytotoxicity and some potential for secondary caries prevention.

  • The purpose of this work was to study the compatibility of several commercially available dentin adhesives with composite resins. In this study, V-shaped cavity preparations were created on both buccal and lingual surfaces of 60 extracted human premolars($3mm{\times}3mm{\times}2mm$ deep). Preparations were located such that the occlusal margins were on the enamel and the gingival margins were on the cementum(1mm below the CEJ). These specimens were randomly divided into three equal groups. Three dentin adhesives(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All Bond 2, Prisma Universal Bond 3)were applied to the cavity in accordance with each manufacturer's instructions. The teeth in each group were restored with four composite resins(Silux plus, Z100, Bisfil, Prisma TPH) in three increments, with each increment light-cured for 40 seconds. All specimens were exposed to 500 cycles of thermal stress. Specimens then placed in a silver nitrate solution(50% by weight) and stored in darkness for 24 hours. They were then immersed for 6 hours in photographic developing solution under flourescent light. Specimens were sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration and observed under a binocular stereoscope. To compare the marginal leakage, ANOVA and Dunkan's multiple range tests were used in analysis. Selected samples were further studied using scanning electron microscopy(XL20, Philips, The Netherlands). The results were as follows. 1. In all groups, the enamel margin showed significantly less leakage than the cementum margin. 2. No statistically significant differences were found in microleakage when composite resins were used with their proprietary dentin adhesives. 3. In comparison between dentin adhesives, Prisma Universal Bond 3 showed significantly less leakage at the enamel margin and Scotch bond multi-purpose showed significantly less leakage at the cementum margin than the other groups. 4. In comparison between composite resins, Silux Plus showed significantly more leakage than other groups at the enamel margin and no statistically significant differences were found in microleakage at the cementum margin. 5. According to the backscattered scanning electron microscope, microleakage occurred via gaps at the dentin adhesives/dentin interface.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate flexural strength, composite surface and fractured surface of three different indirect composite resins. Methods: Fifteen bar-shaped specimens ($25mm{\times}2mm{\times}2mm$) were fabricated for each FL group (Flow type and Light curing) and PLP group (Putty type and Light, Pressure curing) and PL group (Putty type and Light curing) according to manufacturer's instructions and ISO 10477. Fabricated specimens were stored in the distilled water for 24 hours at the temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. Three-point bending strength test was performed to measure flexural strength using universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min (ISO 10477). Surface and fractured surface of specimens were observed by digital microscope. Results were analyzed with Kruskal-wallis tests (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Mean (SD) of three different indirect composite resins were 83.38 (6.67) MPa for FL group, 139.90(16.53) MPa for PLP group and 171.72(16.74) MPa for PL group. Flexural strength were statistically significant (p<0.05). Differences were not observed at fractured surface among three groups. However, many pores over $100{\mu}m$ were observed at PL group in observing surface of specimen. Conclusion: Flexural strength of composite resins was affected by second polymerization method and content of inorganic filler.

  • The fracture and wear behavior of dental composite resins containing prepolymerized particle fillers were investigated. Composite resins such as Metafil, Silux Plus, Heliomolar and Palfique Estelite were selected as specimens and contents of filler in specimens in order to evaluate the effect of prepolymerized particle fillers in fracture and wear characteristics. Ball on flat wear tester was used for the wear test at room temperature. The friction coefficient of Metafil was quite high relatively, and the wear resistances of Silux Plus and Palfique Estelite were better than those of Metafil and Heliomolar at the same experimental condition. It was found that the main wear mechanism was abrasive wear containing of plastic deformation of dental material.
