  • In this paper, the effect of the natural aging on the strength distribution and structural service life of a Filament Wound (FW) composite pressure vessel was studied. The fiber failure strain, which is varied significantly, was considered as the design random variable and the strength analysis was carried out by probabilistic numerical approach. The progressive failure analysis technique and the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) were embedded in this numerical model. As the calculation results, the probability of failure was obtained for each aging time steps and it is found that the strength degradation in FW composite pressure vessel, due to the natural aging, appears within 10 year-aging-time. As an example of the life prediction under natural aging using arbitrary laminated model, the service lifetime of 13 years was predicted based on the probability of failure of 2.5% and the design pressure of 3,250 psi.

  • In this article, stability of composite conical shells subjected to dynamic external pressure is investigated by numerical and experimental methods. In experimental tests, cross-ply glass woven fabrics were selected for manufacturing of specimens. Hand-layup method was employed for fabricating the glass-epoxy composite shells. A test-setup that includes pressure vessel and data acquisition system was designed. Also, numerical analyses are performed. In these analyses, effect of actual geometrical imperfections of experimental specimens on the numerical results is investigated. For introducing the imperfections to the numerical models, linear eigen-value buckling analyses were employed. The buckling modes are multiplied by very small numbers that are derived from measurement of actual specimens. Finally, results are compared together while a good agreement between results of imperfect numerical analyses and experimental tests is observed.

  • In this study, CNG composite vessel is analyzed by using coupled model with liner and composite layer. For the coupled model, a method using theoretical analysis and FEA is suggested: elastic solution for laminated tube is used for theoretical analysis of the composite vessel, FEA is performed to the model of CNG composite vessel in actual conditions. On the basis of these results, optimal thickness and winding angle of the composite layer considering the material properties and thickness of the liner are determined. The results of theoretical analysis and FEA are compared with those carried out in previous studies for verifying the suggested analysis method.

  • Recently, an automobile market used to natural gas has emerged as fast-growing as the several countries, who holds abundant natural fuel resources, has promoted to supply the national agency for an automobile car. LNG fuel vessel is more efficient in another way as the energy density is high, but it requires a high technology and investment to maintain extreme low temperature. CNG fuel vessel are relatively low-cost alternative to LNG, but poorly economical in terms of energy density as well as showing safety issues associated with compressed pressure. The development of adsorbed natural gas (ANG) has emerged as one of potential solutions. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the weight of vessel by applying light-weighed a composite carbon fiber in order to response to the regulation of $CO_2$ emission. Herein, this study make the prototype ANG vessel not only based on the optimal design and analysis of material characteristic but also based on the shape design, and it suggest a new type for the composite carbon fiber vessel which verified functional test. Moreover, the detail shape design is analyzed by a finite element analysis, and its verifies the ANG vessel.

  • Based on the composite finite element simulation and a series of hydrostatic pressure and burst tests, autofrettage effects on strength and deformation of fiber reinforced pressure vessel with metallic liners have been studied in the paper (autofrettage: during the course of one pressure taking effect, the increasing internal stress in metallic liner can surpass the yielding point and the plastic deformation will happen, which result in that when there is no internal pressure, there are press stress in liner while tensile stress in fiber lamination). By making use of a composite finite element Ansys code and a series of experiments, the autofrettage pressure is determined in order to make the aluminium liner be totally in elastic state, under given hydrostatic test pressure. The stress intensity factors of the longitudinal crack in aluminum liner end under internal pressure and thermal loads have been computed and analyzed before and after the autofrettage processing. Through numerical calculation and experiment investigations, it is found that a correct choice for autofrettage pressure can improve the gas-tightness and fatigue strength of FRP vessel.

  • Filament-Wound composite pressure vessels offer significant weight saving over the conventional metal pressure vessels. S-2 glass/epoxy pressure vessel was designed, fabricated and tested. It was considered, in the analysis that the matrix and the metal liner of FRP pressure vessel shared the internal pressure. The thicknesses of hoop and helical layers were determinded by the computer program developed for the design of FRP/Metal structural pressure vessel. The computer program increased the structural efficiency about 14% comparing with the netting analysis. The experimental measurement on the deformation by internal pressure agrees with the theoretical analysis within the accuracy of 5%.

  • A thery was developed to design a high pressure vessel with combined structure of the metal and the composite to withstand the pressure of several tens of thousands psias to reduce the weight of the impulse motor which produces high level of thrust within several tens of seconds. The elastic-plastic stress analyses were carried out to prove the validity of the design theory A combustion chamber of the impulse motor was designed by the design theory, fabricated, and tested by the hydraulic pressure and the static firings. The bursting pressures from the tests were compared to those predicted by tile design theory and the stress analyses and found to be almost the same. It will be possible to design the high pressure vessel with combined structure of the metal and the composite very easily by the proposed design theory.

  • In order to determine optimal design length of adhesive joint of a composite pressure vessel with separated dome, stress analysis of joint part according to changes of adhesive length was done. Adhesive length has a range of 50mm to 300mm as design variables. The ratio of adhesive length with any stress gradient to initial non-stressed adhesive length was called "stress gradient length ratio" and selected as objective function. The stress gradient length ratio of joint part with adhesive length of more than 200mm was increased very slowly with increase of adhesive length. It means that adhesive length of about 200mm could be the optimal value to ensure the structural safety of joint part against internal pressure of 2,500 psi.

  • In this paper the laminate design parameters are researched to maximize the performance index of a composite pressure vessel. To maximize the performance index, the three design variables that the thickness of each of helical and hoop layers and the length of hoop layer are considered under the assumption of fixed internal space. To optimize the variables, the response surface method is introduced for construction of the surrogate model and the ANOVA(analysis of variance) is performed to evaluate the effects of the variables. The optimization problem is formulated to maximize performance index under the burst pressure constraint. To verify the effectiveness of the research, numerical analyses are performed for the optimum model.
