  • Toothash and plaster of Paris (Calcium sulfate) have been studied for bone substitute through experimental studies and clinical studies. Toothash is like resorbable hydroxyapatite. Plaster of Paris is resorbable and biocompatible. The toothash combined with plaster of Paris has the advantages of individual characteristics. The authors used this composite material in the jaw defect filling. In operation, we could manage this implant material easily and remove the dead space. During the followup period, this composite material was resorbed gradually and substituted as new-forming bone from the surrounding tissue. Complications were minor and treated completely without problems.

  • The present study aimed at investigating the effect of a special plaster on the out-of-plane behavior of masonry walls. A reference specimen, plastered with conventional plaster, and a specimen plastered with a special plastered were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading. The specimens were identical in dimensions and material properties. The special plaster contained an additive, which increased the adherence strength of the plaster to the wall. The amount of the additive in the mortar was adjusted based on the preliminary material tests. The influence of the plaster on the wall behavior was evaluated according to the initial cracking load, type of failure, energy absorption capacity (modulus of toughness), and crack pattern of the wall. Despite having limited contribution to the ductility, the special plaster increased the ultimate load capacity of the wall about 25%. The failure mode of the wall with special plaster resembled the plastic failure mechanism of a reinforced concrete slab in the formation of yielding lines along the wall. The deflection at failure and the modulus of toughness of the wall with special plaster were measured to be in order of 60% and 75% of the corresponding values of the reference wall.

  • The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the material properties of concrete surface preparator with inorganic composite, which was modified with plaster and admixture. A series of experiment were conducted to appraise the properties according to KS F 4716. The experimental results were as follows ; When the concrete surface preparator with inorganic composite was used, the hair crack and split, due to early drying shrinkage, was little. So it is superior to concrete surface preparator with cement paste plaster The bonding strength of concrete surface preparator with inorganic composite increased about 60% compared to that of concrete surface preparator with cement paste plaster. The workability of surface flatness and finishing was superior compared to that of existing concrete surface preparator. All specifications on concrete surface preparator were satisfied in the series of this experiments. Therefore, the concrete surface preparator with inorganic composite might be satisfactory applied in field due to its superior material properties.

  • The effects of plaster on the behavior of single-story single-bay masonry-infilled steel frames under in-plane base accelerations have been experimentally investigated by a shake-table. Tested structures were made in a 1/3 scale, with realistic material properties and construction methods. Steel frames with high and low flexural rigidity of beams and columns were considered. Each type of frame was tested with three variants of masonry: (i) non-plastered masonry; (ii) masonry infill with conventional plaster on both sides; and (iii) masonry infill with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) net reinforced plaster on both sides. Masonry bricks were made of lightweight cellular concrete. Each frame was firstly successively exposed to horizontal base accelerations of an artificial accelerogram, and afterwards, to horizontal base accelerations of a real earthquake. Characteristic displacements, strains and cracks in the masonry were established for each applied excitation. It has been concluded that plaster strengthens the infill and prevents damages in it, which results in more favorable behavior and increased bearing capacity of plastered masonry-infilled frames compared to non-plastered masonry-infilled frames. The load-bearing contribution of the adopted PVC net in the plaster was not noticeable for the tested specimens, probably due to relative small cross section area of fibers in the net. Behavior of masonry-infilled steel frames significantly depends on frame stiffness. Strong frames have smaller displacements than weak frames, which reduces deformations and damages of an infill.

  • The topic of this study is to investigate behaviors of masonry walls strengthened with reinforced fiber plaster under diagonal tensile loads. Full blend brick $100{\times}50{\times}30mm$ in dimensions were used to make masonry walls with dimensions of $400{\times}400{\times}100mm$. Three different samples were manufactured by plastering masonry walls with traditional style, with 3% polypropylene or with 5% steel fiber. All the samples were tested using ASTM 1391-81 standards. The propagation of damage on samples caused by diagonal tensile load was observed and load-displacement graphs were plotted for each sample. A finite element software (ABAQUS) was used to obtain numerical values for all samples and crack patterns and load-displacement responses were obtained. Experimental and numerical results were compared.

  • The concept design of the typha strawbale masonry came up as a result of the urgent demand for a means of constructing sustainable buildings, both in rural and urban settlement, not only suitable for dwellers but for keeping farm products by structures that will respond to the environmental eco-system, coupled with the fact that such structures are also affordable, durable and easy to maintain during their service period. The effects of contact between plaster and the stacked strawbale of a masonry needs to be established and design optimization for durability and stability of the masonry be obtained. The assessment will involve the application of plaster materials (cement and natural earth) to the wall specimen panels. Past works have shown that plastered strawbale walls have adequate resistance against the appropriate vertical loads, and further showed that the earth plaster can bear higher stress than the cement plastered straw bale. There is the implication that the collapse or response of the earth-strawbale wall is significantly higher compared to that of cement-strawbale from other straw-based masonries. Therefore the allowable stresses of plastered typha strawbale shall be predicted for their optimum values using SAP2000. The stress stability of each masonry is obtained by analytical model using the best fit variables for the wall height and thickness.

  • In this article, poly methyl triethoxy silane was compounded with an inorganic waterproof admixture at a certain ratio to improve the performance of gypsum products; a new type of high-efficiency compound water-proofing additive was also investigated. Furthermore, the waterproof mechanism and the various properties on the hardened gypsum plaster were investigated in detail by XRD and SEM. The results show that the intenerate coefficient of gypsum plaster increased to more than 0.9; the water absorbing rate decreased to less than 10 %. Both the bending strength and the compressive strength of gypsum plaster increased by various degrees. The intenerate coefficient reached a maximum value of 0.73 and the strength of the samples showed almost no change when 5% cement alone was added. In this new type of the high-efficiency compound with waterproof additive, the optimal technological parameters for formulas were obtained to be: 5% cement, 18 % mineral powder, and 0.8% poly methyl triethoxy silane, to compound gypsum plaster. Meanwhile, the production of high performance gypsum as a building material has become possible.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of adding autogenous bone to the toothash-plaster mixture in the healing process of bone. Full-thickness round osseous defects with the diameter of 20mm were made at the calvarial bone of adult dogs (n=19) bilaterally, which were thought to be critical size defect. The right defects were repaired with the toothash-plaster mixture plus autogenous bone (compressed volume 0.3cc) and the left defects with only toothash-plaster mixture. At 2-, 4-, 8-, 12- and 20- week after implantation, dogs were sacrificed and evaluated the osseous healing of bony defects clinically, radiographically, and microscopically. The results were as follows; 1. At the clinical observation, the wound healed very well without any problem except severe swelling in the early period after operation. Slight depression was recognized at the both sides when the portions of cranial defect were palpated. 2. There were statistically significant differences between toothash-plaster mixture groups and autogenous bone added groups at the same period, and among the groups in the bone density of the digital radiograms (P<0.001). There was a tendency that bone density was increasing with time. 3. In light microscopic examination, new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after implantation but there is little difference at 20-week after implantation. 4. In fluorescent microscopic examination, the fluorescent band could be observed at the area of active bone formation and the band was more distinct in the autogenous bone added groups then toothash-plaster mixture groups. 5. In transmitted electron microscopic examination, organelles such as rER, Golgi complex and secretory granule and osteoblast were observed. In summary higher volume ratio of autogenous bone is needed to improve the bone healing in that there is little difference between toothash-plaster mixture group and autogenous bone added group at the 20-week after implantation in spite of new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after operation.

  • This study was undertaken to determine whether the addition of calcium sulfate to toothash material (Toothash : plaster of paris=2 : 1) would improve its stabilizing property without adversely affecting its osteoconduction. The radiographic and histologic examinations of bone response of this composite material was performed after 1-, 3-, 5-, 8-, and 12-week implantation in calvaria of rats. No sign of extensive inflammatory response was detected. No movement could be observed with this composite material. Creeping substitution was observed in the surgical site. The direct union between toothash and growing bone after 12 weeks of implantation was observed in the defect margin. We could observe this composite implant material is resorbing slowly as time is over.

  • The objective of this paper is to report the result of an experimental program conducted on the strengthening of nonductile RC frames by using external mesh reinforcement and plaster application. The main objective was to test an alternative strengthening technique for reinforced concrete buildings, which could be applied with minimum disturbance to the occupants. Generic specimen is two floors and one bay RC frame in 1/2 scales. The basic aim of tested strengthening techniques is to upgrade strength, ductility and stiffness of the member and/or the structural system. Six specimens, two of which were reference specimens and the remaining four of which had deficient steel detailing and poor concrete quality were strengthened and tested in an experimental program under cyclic loading. The parameters of the experimental study are mesh reinforcement ratio and plaster thickness of the infilled wall. The effects of the mesh reinforced plaster application for strengthening on behavior, strength, stiffness, failure mode and ductility of the specimens were investigated. Premature and unexpected failure mode has been observed at first and second specimens failed due to inadequate plaster thickness. Also third strengthened specimen failed due to inadequate lap splice of the external mesh reinforcement. The last modified specimen behaved satisfactorily with higher ultimate load carrying capacity. Externally reinforced infill wall composites improve seismic behavior by increasing lateral strength, lateral stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete buildings, and limit both structural and nonstructural damages caused by earthquakes.
