The safety level of a structural system designed per code specifications can not be inferred directly from the reliability of members due to the load redistribution and nonlinear inelastic structural behavior. Comparison of the system and member reliability, which is scarce in the literature, is likely to indicate any possible inconsistency of design codes in providing safe and economical designs. Such a comparative study is presented in this study for moment resisting two-dimensional steel frames designed per AISC LRFD Specifications. The member reliability is evaluated using the resistance of the beam-column element and the elastic load effects that indirectly accounts for the second-order effects. The system reliability analysis is evaluated based on the collapse load factor obtained from a second-order inelastic analysis. Comparison of the system and member reliability is presented for several steel frames. Results suggest that the failure probability of the system is about one order of magnitude lower than that of the most critically loaded structural member, and that the difference between the system and member reliability depends on the structural configuration, degree of redundancy, and dead to live load ratio. Results also suggest that the system reliability is less sensitive to initial imperfections of the structure than the member reliability. Therefore, the system aspect should be incorporated in future design codes in order to achieve more reliability consistent designs.
The front-end side members of automobiles, such as the hat-shaped section member, absorb most of the energy during the front-end collision. The side members absorb more energy in collision if they have higher strength and stiffness, and stable folding capacity (local buckling). Using the above characteristics on energy absorption, vehicle should be designed light-weight to improve fuel combustion ratio and reduce exhaust gas. Because of their specific strength and stiffness, CFRP are currently being considered for many structural (aerospace vehicle, automobiles, trains and ships) applications due to their potential for reducing structural weight. Although CFRP members exhibit collapse modes that are significantly different from the collapse modes of metallic materials, numerous studies have shown that CFRP members can be efficient energy absorbing materials. In this study, the CFRP side members were manufactured using a uni-directional prepreg sheet of carbon/Epoxy and axial static collapse tests were performed for the members. The collapse mode and the energy absorption capability of the members were analyzed under the static load.
In order to determine a minimum thickness of the pultruded GFRP panel as a structural member, some experimental studies were performed. GFRP tubes with 2mm, 4mm, 6mm thickness were manufactured by pultrusion process. First, coupon tests for finding mechanical properties were carried out. Comparisons between test results and analysis results based on classical laminate theory showed large differences in case of 2mm, 4mm specimens. The reason is that it is difficult to apply appropriate pultruding force and keep layered stitched fabric flat for the pultrusion process of complex shaped FRP member with small thickness. On the consequence, we decide 6mm as a minimum thickness of FRP member. Second, 4-point bending tests were performed and the results with compared with numerical analysis. The behavior of FRP tube can be exactly predicted by numerical analysis if buckling analysis is included.
The tall building and super tall building has been a common building type in China, with multiple functions and complex geometry. Composite construction is broadly used in tall building structures and constitutes the mixed structure together with concrete and steel constructions. The mixture of the constructions is purposely designed for specific area based on the analysis results to achieve the best cost-effectiveness. New types of composite construction are conceived of by engineers for columns and walls. Material distribution is more flexible and innovative in the structural level and member level. However the reliability of computer model analysis should be verified carefully. Further researches in the design and build of composite construction are necessary to ensure the success of its application. Composite or Mixture Index is suggested to be used as a performance benchmark.
This study focuses on the experimental evaluation of the flexural-torsional performance of high strength thin-walled composite members. A series of tests on composite members with various sectional aspect ratios subjected to eccentric cyclic loads were conducted. Test results show that the composite member's torsional strength could be approximated using a series of linear segments and evaluated using the superposition of the component steel and reinforced concrete responses. It is also validated from the tests that the strength deterioration of members subjected to combined loads is closely related to the aspect ratios of the sections. An interaction expression between the bending and torsion for high strength thin-walled composite members is proposed for engineering practice references.
This paper presents the analytical results of local buckling of orthotropic I-shape compression members. Employing the equilibrium approach, the characteristic equation for local buckling of I-shape compression member is derived. Using the derived equation, the minimum buckling coefficients with respect to the ratio of width to thickness for the I-shape column are suggested as a graphical form. In addition, the dominant plate component initiating the local buckling of I-shape column is also identified by using the approximate solution and the results are plotted with dotted line on the minimum bucking coefficient curve.
In this study, one type of circular shaped composite tube was used, combined with reinforcing foam and without foam. Furthermore, CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) circular member manufactured from CFRP prepreg sheet for lightweight design. CFRP is an anisotropic material which is the most widely adapted lightweight structural member. The crashworthy behavior of circular composite material tubes subjected to static axial compression under same conditions is reported in this paper. Test was executed in order to compare the results to the energy absorption and collapse shape. The collapse mode during the failure process were observed and analyzed. The behavior of polymeric foams to the tubes crashworthiness were also investigated. According to the experimental results, specimens filled with foam are higher total energy absorption than the other specimens not filled with the foam.
This study focuses on the load carrying capacity and the force transfer mechanism of multi-hole perfobond shear connectors in steel-concrete composite structure. The behavior of multi-hole perfobond shear connector is more complicated than single-hole connector cases. 2 groups push-out tests were conducted. Based on the test results, behavior of the connection was analyzed and the failure mechanism was identified. Simplified iterative method and analytic solution were proposed based on force equilibrium for analyzing multi-hole perfobond shear connector performance. Finally, the sensitivity of design parameters of multi-hole perfobond shear connector was investigated. The results of this research showed that shear force distribution curve of multi-hole perfobond shear connector is near catenary. Shear forces distribution were determined by stiffness ratio of steel to concrete member, stiffness ratio of shear connector to steel member, and number of row. Efficiency coefficient was proposed to should be taking into account in different limit state.
A concrete filled double skin tubular (called CFDST in abbreviation) member consists of two concentric circular steel tubes and filled concrete between them. Purpose of this study is to investigate their bending characteristics experimentally. The two test parameters of the tubes considered were an inner-to-outer diameter ratio and a thickness-diameter ratio. As a result, their observed failure modes were controlled by tensile cracking or local buckling of the outer tube. Discussion is focused on the confinement effect on the filled concrete due to the both tubes and also the influence of the inner-to-outer diameter ratios on their deformability and load carrying capacity.
The study for seismic characteristics of square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns is analytically conducted. For predicting the strength and ductility of CFT columns, fiber analysis technique is used. The analytical results show reasonable agreement with experiment results. The influence of the steel tube on the lateral response of CFT columns is studied for the evaluation of seismic performance.
