  • Design techniques for the deep mixing method, one of the soft ground improvement methods, include two ways to interpret the ground as composite ground and pile ground. However, since comparative studies on these two approaches are insufficient, it is difficult to clearly define the analysis criteria in the design. In this study, two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses have been performed with different conditions. The three conditions, the embankment height, depth of soft ground, and replacement ratio of reinforcement zones were varied and the analysis was performed on the basis of the assumption of composite ground and pile ground for each condition. As a result, the minimum depth of improvement in the two-dimensional analysis was deeper by 6.85~9.08% than in the three-dimensional analysis. The pile ground analysis showed that the depth of improvement was deeper by 12.22~14.45% than the composite ground analysis. Based on these results, it is concluded that for more accurate design, three-dimensional analysis should be performed rather than two-dimensional analysis. also, it is judged that necessary to analyze the ground as composite ground for economical design, and as the pile ground analysis for stable design.

  • Sand Compaction Pile method is one of the widely used ground improvement techniques at loose sand or soft clay ground in Asian countries. However, due to environmental and economical problems concerning shortage of sand resources alternative materials are needed to substitute sand for SCP. This study is on the applicability of slag as an alternative material SCP. Consolidation and direct shear test are performed for the slag-clay composite specimens to find out the positive effects of consolidation rate and shear resistance of slag reinforced ground. The result shows that slag has similar effects with sand in consolidation and shear resistance behavior in composite ground, which says slag can be used as alternative material of sand for SCP.

  • In this paper, a homogeneous dual composite right/left-handed (D-CRLH) transmission line (TL) is proposed by using a defected ground structure (DGS) on the ground plane. In order to satisfy a homogeneity condition of metamaterial, a subwavelength unit cell is designed by way of a spiral DGS and a meander stub. From a dispersion diagram, it is expected that the frequency bands for the left-handed (LH) property is 3.5 - 4.4 GHz. At 3.8 GHz in the LH band, backward propagating phenomenon is observed from full-wave analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed TL has a stop-band in 1.75 - 3.6 GHz.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay wall, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has widely been applied. Improved ground is composite ground which is consisted of the sand pile-surrounding clayey soil. As caisson and upper structures are installed on SCP composite ground, the settlement is compositively occurred by elastic compression of sand compaction piles and also consolidation of the surrounding clay ground. In this study, the combined settlement model is proposed to predict the settlement of SCP composite ground in basis of elastic theory for sand compaction pile and consolidation theory for marine soft clay. Optimization technique was performed based on back-analysis so that real coded genetic algorithm was applied to estimate the parameters of the proposed settlement model. Case analysis was carried out for a domestic SCP composite ground to examine the applicability of the proposed prediction technique.

  • Since the composite ground design method is easy to apply for calculation or numerical analysis, it is applied to the design of cement mixing methods. However, the comparison studies between analysis and actual results such as a trial test and construction for the cement mixing method are few because the composite ground design method was developed for the compaction pile (SCP, GCP) methods. In this study, the results of various analysis methods, such as the composite ground analysis method (1 case) and the individual pile method (3 cases), were compared with actual measurements through a two-dimensional finite element numerical analysis. In case of the surface settlements, the results of study show that the individual plate method was larger than the actual measurements, while other methods are similar. The settlements at the under ground of the improved area is overestimated in all analysis methods. When comparing numerical analysis results for the horizontal displacement, and ground reaction forces, the individual pile method in equivalent wall concept was found to be the most similar to the measurements. The composite ground method was not able to predict the behavior of stress transfer (Arching effect) and it turned out that the prediction of horizontal displacement was too large.

  • Polymeric composite structures used in ground transportation applications such as the carbody of tilting train may be exposed to a ground environmental conditions during long-term missions. In this study, the degradation of mechanical and physical properties of graphite/epoxy composite and glass fabric/phenol composite under ground environmental conditions was investigated. Accelerated environmental conditions of ultraviolet radiation, temperature, and moisture were considered. Several types of specimens were used to investigate the effects of environmental conditions on mechanical properties of the composites. Also, storage shear modulus, loss shear modulus, and tan 8 were measured as a function of exposure times through a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Finally, composite surfaces exposed to environmental conditions were examined using a scanning electron microscope.

  • Vertical drain method, which is one of the soft ground improvement methods, shorten s drain path to accelerate consolidation process and is applied in many sites. At a recent, composite discharge capacity experiment that analyze discharge amount by consolidation behavior with overburden pressure of soft ground in laboratory, simulates similarly with actuality. Geotechnical engineering problems such a s soft ground improvement are solved by numerical analysis by development of computer and numerical analysis techniques. Numerical analysis does that result is contrary by user's inexperience for choice of constitution model and application of analysis method. Therefore, this thesis experiments on composite discharge capacity test and study discharge capacity of drain and consolidation behavior of soft ground installed prefabricated vertical drain boards. Also, This thesis studied reasonable input parameters and constitution model by compare results of composite discharge capacity test and numerical analysis using PLAXIS that is 2D finial element numerical analysis program.

  • In this research, the composite grounds including original clay and soil-cement were constructed for conducting uniaxial compression test. Strength and deformation properties were analysed using results of laboratory tests with variations of water content of clay, replacement ratio and cement content. Numerical simulation using 3D distinct element method was conducted for soil cement. For strength of composite ground that contains more than cement contents of 15 %, it is more effective to increase cement content than increase of replacement ratio. Strength and elastic modulus of composite ground could be predicted by regression equations using uniaxial compression strength of clay, cement content of soil cement and replacement ratio. For strength and elastic modulus of soil cement, which is most important things for predicting final strength and elastic modulus of composite ground, numerical simulation using the distinct element method adapted bonding model could be used to verify laboratory test, and predict strength and elastic modulus.

  • The sand compaction pile (SCP) method, which forms a composite ground by driving sand piles into clay deposit, is the most commonly used soil improvement techniques in many countries for more than 30 years. Installation of sand compaction piles reduces the amount of consolidation settlement and increases the bearing capacity of soft clay deposit. In this paper, field survey conducted to investigated the consolidation behavior of the composite ground improved by SCPs. It is suggested that the measured consolidation velocity is later than design theory, however measured consolidation settlement is higher than design theory.
