In this study, I-type girders, main members of a steel composite bridge, are designed by Load and Resistance Factor Design method as well as Allowable Stress Design method. The width, height web thickness and flange thickness of main girders are set as design variables. The design program connects optimization program ADS, which is coded with FORTRAN, and a main program coded with $C^{++}$. In this study, it is shown that in this particular steel composite bridge, the design by The Load and Resistance Factor Design method is more economical than that by The Allowable Stress Design method.d.

There has been a strong demand on more economic and lower depth girder bridges for short and medium span range, PRECOM, which is a new type steel-concrete composite girder, has been developed to realize a more economic bridge system with a lower depth girder. In the PRECOM girder bridge, a steel plate girder is simply supported and then concrete form is hung to girder. Thus, the self-weight of the concrete is loaded to the steel girder. To increase the resistance of concrete in the lower casing against tensile stress, compressive force is introduced by prestressed tendon To evaluate the manufacturability and performances of the completed bridge, four 15-m girders and a bridge specimen with two 20m girders wvere constructed. The camber during the construction and introduction of an appropriate compressive force was evaluated. Dynamic data were obtained through the modal testing of the completed girders. Static loading test was also conducted to examine cracks and evaluate the decrease in stiffness and failure behavior under extreme conditions.

Future bridge decks must have high load-resistance capacity as well as fatigue strength to withstand the increase in traffic loading and the increase in span length between girders due to the decrease in the number of main girders. Steel-concrete composite bridge decks may be proper deck types to satisfy such requirements. To promote the application of composite bridge decks, a rational process to predict and evaluate the fatigue behavior of steel concrete composite bridge deck is required. Various types of steel-concrete composite bridge decks have been developed in many countries. In this study, combining advantages of the existing composite deck types, a new type of composite bridge deck is proposed. An experimental study is performed to examine the fatigue behavior of the proposed composite bridge deck. This composite bridge deck consists of corrugated steel sheet, welded T-beams, stud-type shear connectors and reinforced concrete filler. The fatigue tests are conducted under four-point bending test with three different stress ranges in constant amplitude. The fatigue category of the fillet welding between corrugated steel sheet and the T-beam is evaluated based on the S-N data obtained from the experiment.

Nonlinear behavior of two-span, continuous composite steel-concrete girders strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) bonded to the top of concrete slab over the negative moment region was evaluated using a non-linear Finite Element (FE) model in this paper. A three-dimensional FE model of continuous composite girder using commercial software ABAQUS simulated and validated with experimental results. The interfacial regions of the composite girder components were modeled using suitable interface elements. Validation of the proposed numerical model with experimental data confirmed the applicability of this model to predict the loading history, strain level for the different components and concrete-steel relative slip. The FE model captured the different modes of failure for the continuous composite girder either in the concrete slab or at the interfacial region between CFRP sheet and concrete slab. Through a parametric study, the thickness of CFRP sheet and shear connection required to develop full capacity of the continuous composite girder at negative moment zone have been investigated. The FE results showed that the proper thickness of CFRP sheet at negative moment region is a function of the adhesive strength and the positive moment capacity of the composite section. The shear connection required at the negative moment zone depends on CFRP sheet's tensile stress level at ultimate load.
Shear studs are often used to connect steel girders and concrete deck to form a composite bridge system. The application of precast concrete deck to steel-concrete composite bridges can improve the strength of decks and reduce the shrinkage and creep effect on the long-term behavior of structures. How to ensure the connection between steel girders and concrete deck directly influences the composite behavior between steel girder and precast concrete deck as well as the behavior of the structure system. Compared with traditional multi-I girder systems, a twin-I girder composite bridge system is more simplified but may lead to additional requirements on the shear studs connecting steel girders and decks due to the larger girder spacing. Up to date, only very limited quantity of researches has been conducted regarding the behavior of shear studs on twin-I girder bridge systems. One convenient way for steel composite bridge system is to cast concrete deck in place with shear studs uniformly-distributed along the span direction. For steel composite bridge system using precast concrete deck, voids are included in the precast concrete deck segments, and they are casted with cast-in-place concrete after the concrete segments are erected. In this paper, several sets of push-out tests are conducted, which are used to investigate the heavier of shear studs within the voids in the precast concrete deck. The test data are analyzed and compared with those from finite element models. A simplified shear stud model is proposed using a beam element instead of solid elements. It is used in the finite element model analyses of the twin-I girder composite bridge system to relieve the computational efforts of the shear studs. Additionally, a parametric study is developed to find the effects of void size, void spacing, and shear stud diameter and spacing. Finally, the recommendations are given for the design of precast deck using void for twin I-girder bridge systems.
Composite steel-concrete box girders are frequently used in bridge construction for their economic and structural advantages. An integrated metaheuristic based optimization procedure is proposed for discrete size optimization of straight multi-span steel box girders with the objective of minimizing the self-weight of girder. The metaheuristic algorithm of choice is the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm. The optimum design of a box girder is characterized by geometry, serviceability and ultimate limit states specified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Size optimization of a practical design example investigates the efficiency of this optimization approach and leads to around 15% of saving in material.
The paper is concerned with the behavior of tapered steel plate girders, primarily subjected to shear loading; experimental as well as finite element results obtained from the studies are presented in this paper. In the experimental study, 11 large-scale girders, one of uniform section and 10 tapered, were tested to failure and all girders were analysed by finite element method. The results are compared and the accuracy of the finite element modeling established. A parametric study was carried out with thickness of web, loading direction and taper angle as parameters. An analytical model, based on Cardiff model for girders of uniform cross-section, is also proposed in the paper.
This paper proposes nominal flexural strength considering strain-hardening effect of HSB600 high performance steel for compact composite I-girders in positive bending. Unlike conventional steels, HSB600 undergoes strain-hardening just after yielding without going through yield plateau. However, because the nominal flexural strength specified in domestic and foreign bridge design specifications has been developed for the conventional steel composite girders, the nominal flexural strength does not appropriately consider the strain-hardening of HSB600. Therefore, plastic moment considering a strain-hardening is proposed so as to consider effect of the strain-hardening of HSB600 on flexural strength and then moment-curvature analysis is performed to a wide range of cross-sections. From results of the analysis, a parameter representing the effect of the strain-hardening on the flexural strength of HSB600 composite girders is proposed. Furthermore, by using this parameter, the nominal flexural strength considering the strain-hardening effect for HSB600 composite I-girders in positive bending is proposed and then evaluated by comparing with the current AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications.
The age-adjusted effective modulus method has been known to provide more precise assessment than the traditional Yassumi method for long-term behavior estimation of prestressed composite girders. The age-adjusted effective modulus method, however, involves complicated calculation, thereby making the Yassumi method more prevalent in actual design. This study presents rational approaches to revise creep coefficients for the Yassumi method by using parametric study results obtained from the age-adjusted effective modulus method.
The flexural behavior of composite HSB600 and HSB800 I-girders under a positive moment was investigated using the material non-linear moment-curvature analysis method. Three representative composite sections with different ductility properties were selected as the baseline sections in this study. Using these baseline sections, the moment-curvature program was verified by comparing the flexural strength and the moment-curvature curve obtained from the program with those obtained using the non-linear FE analysis of ABAQUS. In the FE analysis, the composite girders were modeled three-dimensionally with flanges, the web, and the concrete slab as thin shell elements, and initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. In the moment-curvature and FE analyses, the 28-day compressive strength of the concrete slab was assumed to be 30-50 MPa, and the HSB600 and HSB800 steels were modeled as elasto-plastic strain-hardening materials, with the concrete as the CEB-FIP model. The effects of the ductility ratio of the composite girder, the type of steel, the compressive strength of the concrete deck, and the location of the plastic neutral axis on the flexural characteristics were analyzed.
