  • This paper deals with the free vibration behavior of rotating composite beams reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under uniform thermal loads. The temperature-dependent beam material is assumed to be a mixture of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in an isotropic matrix and five different functionally graded (FG) distributions of CNTs are considered according to the variation along the thickness, namely the UD-uniform, FG-O, FG-V, FG-Λ and FG-X distributions where FG-V and FG-Λ are unsymmetrical patterns. Considering the Timoshenko beam theory (TBT), a new finite element formulation of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FGCNTRC) beam is created for the first time. And the effects of several essential parameters including rotational speed, hub radius, effective material properties, slenderness ratio, boundary conditions, thermal force and moments due to temperature variation are considered in the formulation. By implementing different boundary conditions, some new results of both symmetric and non-symmetrical distribution patterns are presented in tables and figures to be used as benchmark for further validation. In addition, as an alternative advanced composite application for rotating systems exposed to thermal load, the positive effects of CNT addition in improving the dynamic performance of the system have been observed and the results are presented in several tables and figures.

  • The governing partial differential equations of a helical spring with a circular section were derived from Frenet formulas and Timoshenko beam theory. These were solved to give the dispersion relationship between wave number and frequency along with wave form. Wave motions of helical springs are categorized by 4 regimes. In the first regime, the lower frequency area, the torsional and extensional waves of the spring are predominant and two waves are composite wave motions involving lateral motion of the coils and rotation of the coils about a horizontal axis. All waves are propagating in the second regime. The wave of the extensional motion of the spring and one wave of transverse motion of a wire change from travelling waves to near field waves in the third regime. Both waves excited by both axial and transverse motion are predominant in the fourth regime.

  • The response of multi-story building structures to lateral loads, mainly due to earthquake and wind, is investigated for preliminary design purposes. Emphasis is placed on structural systems consisting of rigid and braced steel frames. An attempt to gain a qualitative understanding of the influence of bending and shear stiffness distribution on the deformations of such structures is made. This is achieved by modeling the structure with a stiffness equivalent Timoshenko beam. It is observed that the conventional stiffness distribution, dictated by strength constraints, may not be the best to satisfy deflection criteria. This is particularly the case for slender structural systems with prevailing bending deformations, such as flexible braced frames. This suggests that a new approach to the design of such frames may be appropriate when serviceability governs. A pertinent strategy for preliminary design purposes is proposed.

  • This article focuses on the study of the buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) nanosize tubes, including porosity, based on the first shear deformation and higher-order theory of the tube. The nano-scale tube is simulated using the nonlocal gradient strain theory, and the general equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's principle for the Zhang-Fu's tube model (as a higher-order theory) and Timoshenko beam theory. Finally, the derived equations are solved using a numerical method for both simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of different parameters, such as axial and radial FG power indices, porosity parameter, and nonlocal gradient strain parameters, on the buckling behavior of the bi-dimensional functionally graded porous tube. Keywords: Nonlocal strain gradient theory; buckling; Zhang-Fu's tube model; Timoshenko theory; Two-dimensional functionally graded materials; Nanotubes; Higher-order theory.

  • In this paper, the dynamic flexural stiffness of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members is investigated based on vibration modal testing and a Bayesian model updating procedure. To reflect the actual service states of CFST members, a 3-stage modal testing procedure is developed for 6 circular CFST beam-columns, in which the modal parameters of the specimens under varying axial load levels are extracted. In the model updating procedure, a Timoshenko beam element model is first established, in which the influence of shear deformation and rotational inertia are incorporated. Subsequently, a 2-round Bayesian model updating strategy is proposed to calculate the dynamic flexural stiffness of the specimens, which could effectively consider the influence of physical constraints in the updating process and achieve reasonably well results. Analysis of the updating results shows that with the increase of the axial load level, degradation of the flexural stiffness is significantly influenced by the load eccentricity. It shows that the cracking of the core concrete is the primary reason for the flexural stiffness degradation of CFST beam-columns. Finally, based on comparison with equations proposed by several design standards, the calculation methods for the dynamic flexural stiffness of CFST members is recommended.

  • In this article, free vibration behavior of electro-magneto-thermo sandwich Timoshenko beam made of porous core and Graphene Platelet Reinforced Composite (GPLRC) in a thermal environment is investigated. The governing equations of motion are derived by using the modified strain gradient theory for micro structures and Hamilton's principle. The magneto electro are under linear function along the thickness that contains magnetic and electric constant potentials and a cosine function. The effects of material length scale parameters, temperature change, various distributions of porous, different distributions of graphene platelets and thickness ratio on the natural frequency of Timoshenko beam are analyzed. The results show that an increase in aspect ratio, the temperature change, and the thickness of GPL leads to reduce the natural frequency; while vice versa for porous coefficient, volume fractions and length of GPL. Moreover, the effect of different size-dependent theories such as CT, MCST and MSGT on the natural frequency is investigated. It reveals that MSGT and CT have most and lowest values of natural frequency, respectively, because MSGT leads to increase the stiffness of micro Timoshenko sandwich beam by considering three material length scale parameters. It is seen that by increasing porosity coefficient, the natural frequency increases because both stiffness and mass matrices decreases, but the effect of reduction of mass matrix is more than stiffness matrix. Considering the piezo magneto-electric layers lead to enhance the stiffness of a micro beam, thus the natural frequency increases. It can be seen that with increasing of the value of WGPL, the stiffness of microbeam increases. As a result, the value of natural frequency enhances. It is shown that in hc/h = 0.7, the natural frequency for WGPL = 0.05 is 8% and 14% less than its for WGPL = 0.06 and WGPL = 0.07, respectively. The results show that with an increment in the length and width of GPLs, the natural frequency increases because the stiffness of micro structures enhances and vice versa for thickness of GPLs. It can be seen that the natural frequency for aGPL = 25 ㎛ and hc/h = 0.6 is 0.3% and 1% more than the one for aGPL = 5 ㎛ and aGPL = 1 ㎛, respectively.

  • An exact dynamic analytical method for free vibrations of continuous partial-interaction composite beams is proposed based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The main advantage of this method is that the independent shear deformations and rotary inertia of sub-beams are considered, which is more in line with the reality. Therefore, the accuracy of eigenfrequencies obtained by this method is significantly improved, especially for higher order modes, compared to the existing methods where the rotary angles of both sub-beams are assumed to be equal irrespective of the differences in the shear stiffness of each sub-beam. Furthermore, the solutions obtained by the proposed method are exact owing to no introduction of approximated displacement and force fields in the derivation. In addition, an exact analytical solution for the case of simply supported is obtained. Based on this, an approximate expression for the fundamental frequency of continuous partial-interaction composite beams is also proposed, which is useful for practical engineering applications. Finally, the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method and the approximate expression are explored using numerical and experimental examples; The influence factors including the interfacial interaction, shear modulus ratio, span-to-depth ratio, and side-to-main span length ratio on the eigenfrequencies are presented and discussed in detail.

  • This paper presents an investigation into the magneto-thermo-mechanical vibration and damping of a viscoelastic functionally graded-carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs)-reinforced curved microbeam based on Timoshenko beam and strain gradient theories. The structure is surrounded by a viscoelastic medium which is simulated with spring, damper and shear elements. The effective temperature-dependent material properties of the CNTs-reinforced composite beam are obtained using the extended rule of mixture. The structure is assumed to be subjected to a longitudinal magnetic field. The governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle and solved by employing differential quadrature method (DQM). The effect of various parameter like volume percent and distribution type of CNTs, temperature change, magnetic field, boundary conditions, material length scale parameter, central angle, viscoelastic medium and structural damping on the vibration and damping behaviors of the nanocomposite curved microbeam is examined. The results show that with increasing volume percent of CNTs and considering magnetic field, material length scale parameter and viscoelastic medium, the frequency of the system increases and critically damped situation occurs at higher values of damper constant. In addition, the structure with FGX distribution type of CNTs has the highest stiffness. It is also observed that increasing temperature, structural damping and central angle of curved microbeam decreases the frequency of the system.
