A compliant mechanism is a mechanism that produces its motion by the flexibility of some or all of its members when input force or thermal load is applied. Whereas the topology optimizations based on homogenization and SIMP parameterization have been successfully applied for compliant mechanism design, ESO approach has been hardly considered yet for the optimization of these types of systems. In this paper, traditional ESO method is adopted to achieve the optimum design of a compliant mechanism for thermal load, since AESO method cannot consider the effect of both heat conduction and convection. Sensitivity number, a criterion for element removal in traditional ESO, was newly defined for input thermal loading. The procedure has been tested in numerical applications and compared with the results obtained by other methods to validate these approaches.

In this paper, a miniaturized stage with two prismatic-prismatic joints (2-PP) type parallel compliant mechanism driven by piezo actuators is proposed. This stage consists of two layers which are a motion guide layer and an actuation layer. The motion guide layer has 2-PP type parallel compliant mechanism to guide two translational motions, whereas the actuation layer has two leverage type amplification mechanisms and two piezo actuators to generate forces. Since the volume of the stage is too small to mount displacement sensors, the piezo actuators embedding strain gauge sensors are chosen. With the strain gauge-embedded piezo actuators, a semi-control is implemented, which results in hysteresis compensation of the stage. As the results, the operating range of $30{\mu}m$, the resolution of 20 nm, and the bandwidth of 400 Hz in each axis were obtained in the experiments.

Fish generates large thrust through an oscillating motion with a compliant joint of caudal fin. The compliance of caudal fin affects the thrust generated by the fish. Due to the flexibility of the fish, the fish can generate a travelling wave motion which is known to increase the efficiency of the fish. However, a detailed research on the relationship between the flexible joint and the thrust generation is needed. In this paper, the compliant joint of a caudal fin is implemented in the driving mechanism of a robotic fish. By varying the driving frequency and stiffness of the compliant joint, the relationship between the thrust generation and the stiffness of the flexible joint is investigated. In general, as the frequency increases, the thrust increases. When higher driving frequency is applied, higher stiffness of the flexible joint is needed to maximize the thrust. The bending angles between the compliant joint and the caudal fin are compared with the changes of the thrust in one cycle. This result can be used to design the robotic fish which can be operated at the maximum thrust condition using the appropriate stiffness of the compliant joint.

This paper proposes a new compliant contact control strategy for the robot manipulators accidentally interacting with an unknown environment. The main features of the proposed method are summarized as follows: First, each entry in the diagonal stiffness matrix corresponding to the task coordinate in Cartesian space is adaptively adjusted during con-tact along the corresponding axis based on the contact force with its environment. Second, it can be used for both unconstrained and constrained motions without any switching mechanism which often causes undesirable instability and/or vibrational motion of the end effector. Third, the adjusted stiffness gains are automatically recovered to initially specified stiffness gains when the task is changed from constrained motion to unconstrained motion. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method by employing a two-link direct drive manipulator interacting with an unknown environment.

Fixtures are used in almost all phases of machining and assembly to position and hold a part accurately. The class of fixture which consists of 3 locators and 1 clamp(3L/1C) is known as the minimal set that can provide form closure which is a kinematic constraint condition for preventing all planar motions. This type of fixtures has advantages in terms of the number of fixture elements required, the time for clamping, and so on. However it is not widely used in industry because reliable loading scheme has not been reported. In this paper, we propose a method to load the class of 3L/1C fixtures using compliant motions. The planner is developed for synthesizing compliant motions to achieve precise final fixture configuration in the presence of sensing and control uncertainties. A novel approach to eliminate uncertainty in part orientation by adding one extra fixture element called an aligning pin is proposed.

To control the motion generated by a compliant mechanism the design method using specified geometrical advantage is proposed. The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current geometrical advantage of a mechanism and topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a mechanism. The results of several test problems including a displacement converter design and a gripper design are compared with a multi-criteria model and show that the design of an accurate compliant mechanism with specified geometrical advantage can be obtained.
There are increasing needs to deliver the multimedia streaming over heterogeneous networks. When considering network environments and equipment accessed by user, delivery of video streaming must be scalable. There are many kinds of scalable video coding: spatial, temporal, SNR, and hybrid. The SNR scalable and spatial resolution, but different SNR quality with respect to layers. The 1-layer SNR scalable encoder produces SNR scalable video streams with ease. But, there is drift problem. Modified 1-layer approach does not have this problem but coding inefficiency, and is not MPEG-compliant. The present MPEG-compliant 2-layer encoder comes out to reduce coding rate. But it still use only base layer to encode whole layer. In this paper, we propose adaptive MPEG-compliant 2-layer encoder. Using linear combination algorithm, encoder use 1 motion vector to encode the sequences efficiently. By dong this, we can achieve the coding efficiency of SNR scalable coding.
We have shown how unstructured modeling was used to derive a general stability condition in Part 1. In Part 2, we focus on the particular dynamics (structures modeling) of the robot manipulator and environment. Using rigid body dynamics, the stability condition for the direct drive robots has been achieved in terms of the Jacobian and robot tracking controller. Combining the structured and unstructured modeling, a stability condition for a particular application can be obtained. This approach has been used to analyze compliant motion on the University of Minnesota robot using a feedforward torque controller. We have obtained a stability condition for this application. Through both simulation and experiment, the sufficiency of this condition has been demonstrated. For a sufficient stability condition, recall that if the condition is satisfied, then the stability is guaranteed; however, if the condition is violated, no conclusion can be made.

In this paper, a design and control of the safe arm with passive compliant joints(PCJ) is presented. Each PCJ has a magneto- rheological damper and maximum 6 springs. Compliance analysis in Cartesian space is performed with the compliance ellipsoid; this analysis shows a map between compliance in the joint space and compliance in Cartesian space. Vibration control of the arm using an input shaping technique is also presented; the results of a simulation and an experiment prove that a fast motion of the safe arm without residual vibration can be performed.
