  • To achieve high precision cutting as well as production capability in the machine tool, it is needed to develop excellent rigidity statically, dynamically and thermally as well. In order to predict the qualitative behavior of a machine tool, simultaneous analysis of mechanics and heat transfer is required. Generally, machine tool designers have solved designing problems based on partial estimation of the specified rigidity. This study clears the inter-relationship between therm, and propose multi-phase optimization of machine tool structure using a genetic algorithm. The multi-phase solution method is consists of a series of mechanical design problem. At this first phase of static design problem, multi-objective optimization for the purpose of minimization of the total weight and static compliance minimization is solved using the Pareto Genetic Algorithm.

  • A reciprocating engine installed on a normal category airplane shall be effectively cooled by air flown through the engine compartment. A airplane powerplant designer has to design cooling air inlets, baffles, seals, and outlets to maintain cylinder head temperatures and oil temperature under the limits, and show compliance with appropriate airworthiness standard. In this study, cooling designs of the installed engine and compliance requirements applicable to the cooling designs were reviewed, and engine cooling flight test results were evaluated for design changes. Engine cooling certification test will be conducted in a next step.

  • The compression creep behavior of grains when loaded depends not only on load but also on duration of load application. The most common methods of studying the load-time characteristics of agricultural products is by employing rheological models such as Burger's model. However it is sometimes not sufficient to describe the viscoelastic behavior of grains to be Burger's model. For this reason, this study was conducted to develop the rheological model which represented the creep compliance response of the rough rice kernel and was a function of initial stress applied and time. The effects of the initial stress applied and the moisture content on the compression creep behavior of the rough rice kernel were analyzed. The results were obtained from the study as follows: 1. Since the viscoelastic behavior of the rough rice kernel was nonlinear, the transient and steady state creep compliance was satisfactorily modelled as follows: $$J({\sigma},t)=A{\sigma}^B[C+Dt-exp(-Ft)]$$ But, for the every stress applied, the compression creep behavior of the samples tested can be well described by Burger's model respectively. 2. The creep compliance, the instantaneous elastic strain, the retarded elastic strain and the viscous strain of the sample tested generally increased in magnitude with increasing the applied initial stress and the moisture content used in the tests. At low moisture content, the creep compliance for the Japonica-type rough rice kernel Was a little higher than those for Indica-type and at high moisture content, vice versa at high moisture content. 3. The retardation times of the samples had not an uniform tendency by the initial stress and the moisture content. The retardation times ranged from 0.66 to 6.76 seconds, and the creep progressed from transient to steady state at a relatively high rate. 4. The less viscous strain than the instantaneous elastic strain for the samples tested indicated that rough rice kernel behaved as a viscoelastic body characterized by elasticity than viscosity.

  • The average probability of a lightning strike to transport aircraft operating in airline service has been estimated to be approximately one strike in every year (or one strike per 1,000 through 20,000 flight hours). The important thing is not the probability of a lightning strike to aircraft, but the fact that aircraft is struck by lightning. Therefore, lightning protection design for aircraft should be qualified and compliance with airworthiness standards related to lightning protection must be substantiated in the process of certification. In this paper, I studied means of compliance for lightning protection through analysis of some test cases, including the KC-100 airplane that firstly obtained civil type certificate in Korea. Based on this paper, it will be also necessary to study on the effect of lightning for space launch vehicles.

  • This paper describes a study on dynamic characteristics analysis and dynamic compliance evaluation of a 5-axis multi-tasking machine tool of ram-head type. Structural dynamics analysis and evaluation are necessary to machine tool design and development to secure good machine tool performance against tough and harsh machining conditions. In this study, natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes of the machine tool structure were analyzed by using both F.E.M. modal analysis and impulse hammer test. Furthermore, dynamic compliance of the machine tool was analyzed by using F.E.M. and also measured by using a hydraulic exciter test. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental test results showed good agreement with each other.

  • A finite element analysis of end-to-end artery/PTFE anastomosis has been presented in this study to evaluate the distribution of compliance and stresses in the vicinity of the anastomosis due to any mismatch in compliance characteristics. The artery wall was assumed to be made of linear isotropic material in this simplified model and a nonlinear analysis and convergency study with respect to increasing meshed element numbers were performed with a mean artery pressure loading of the artery-PTFE model. Also, sub-modeling method was introduced to progress the accuracy of the finite element analysis. The results are as follow : 1. A hypercompliant zone on the artery side was observed around 4.0mm from the anastomosis and a high hoop stresses in the wall of artery and PTFE was dominent. 2. An artery displays large deformation so that nonlinear analysis and sub-modeling method was used. 3. An anastomosis with the thinner thickness and larger diameter PTFE (C type) could reduce the compliance disagreement.

  • OSHA(Occupational Safety and Health Act) generally regulates employer's business principles in the workplace to maintain safety environment. This act has the fundamental purpose to protect employee's safety and health in the workplace by reducing industrial accidents. Authors tried to investigate the correlation between 'occupational injuries and illnesses' and level of regulation compliance using Survey on Current Status of Occupational Safety & Health data by the various statistical methods, such as generalized regression analysis, logistic regression analysis and poison regression analysis in order to compare the results of those methods. The results have shown that the significant affecting compliance factors were different among those statistical methods. This means that specific interpretation should be considered based on each statistical method. In the future, relevant statistical technique will be developed considering the distribution type of occupational injuries.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate whether monetary and non-monetary incentives paid to exporters influence the level of compliance and tendency to behave opportunistically. As one of the most common ways to export one's products overseas is to establish relationships with foreign agents, numerous research has aimed to identify types of incentives to motivate foreign agents to bring the most efficient outcomes. Stemming from previous studies, this research hypothesizes that the type of incentives affects exporter's level of compliance, and tendency to act opportunistically which determine the level of exporter's satisfaction on foreign agency role performance. Data was collected from 196 Korean exporters, and the findings suggest that exporters should actively engage in providing non-monetary incentives to their agents to motivate importers to comply with exporter's rules. Conversely, agents tend to act more opportunistically when they receive monetary incentives only. These phenomena lead to the conclusions that the satisfaction level of foreign agency role performance is improved when non-monetary incentives are actively in place, and at the same time, foreign agent's level of compliance and opportunism play mediating roles.

  • The vibratory energy introduced into the external ear canal is changed by the mechanical factors of eardrum itself, the motility of ossicles, and the air cushion of tympanic cavity and the like. This study was designed to investigate the volume of middle ear cavity and mastoid air cell system as a factor of determining the accoustic impedance of middle ear system. The author studied how the increase in air volume of middle ear cavity effects on the acoustic impedance of middle ear system with dogs' ears and researched the correlation between the degree of pneumatization of temporal bones and the acoustic impedance of middle ear system by comparing the radiological findings of pneumatization (Law's and Towne's projection) with the acoustic impedance measurements with Madsen ZO 70. The result is as follows: 1 The tympanometric findings in control state revealed the curves of type A, and did not change in its configuration by the increase in the air volume of dogs middle ear system. 2. The static compliance of middle ear revealed a distinct and linear increase in proportion to the increase in air volume of middle ear system; the rate of increase was $0.05{\pm}0.02$ cc of static compliance per cc of air volume. 3. Authenticated in the above result and the tendency to increase in static compliance in proportion to the increase in the degree of pneumatization of temporal bones, there was significant regression equation between the degree of pneumatization of temporal bones (x variable) and the static compliance of middle ear system; $y=0.19x{\pm}0.16{\pm}0.05$ It is suggested that the difference in volume of middle ear system plays an important role in the change of the static compliance of middle ear, and the author concludes that the measurement of static compliance of middle ear has clinical value as diagnostic means of evaluating the degree of pneumatization of temporal bones along with some radiological examination.
