In this paper, multiphase dynamic optimization of machine structure is presented. The final goal is to obtain ( i ) light weight, and ( ii ) rigidity statically and dynamically. The entire optimization process is carried out in two steps. In the first step, multiple optimization problem with two objective functions is treated using Pareto genetic algorithm. Two objective functions are weight of the structure, and static compliance. In the second step, maximum receptance is minimized using genetic algorithm. The method is applied to a simplified milling machine.
This paper presents an optimal pattern for distributing stiffness along a framed tube structure through an analytic equation, which may be used during the preliminary design stage. Most studies in this field are computationally intensive and time consuming, while a hand-calculation method, as presented here, is a more suitable tool for sensitivity analyses and parametric studies. Approach in development of the analytic model is to minimize the mean compliance (external work) for a given volume of material. A variational statement of the problem is made, and a specified deformation-profile is obtained as the necessary condition for a minimum; enforcing this condition, stiffness is then computed. Due to some near-zero values for stiffness, the problem is modified by considering a lower bound constraint. To deal with this constraint, the design domain is assumed to be divided into two zones of constant stiffness and constant curvature; and the problem is restated in terms of these concepts. It will be shown that this methodology allows for easy computation of stiffness through an analytic and dimensionless equation, valid in any system of units. To show practicality of the proposed method, a tubed-system structure with uniform stiffness distribution is redesigned using the proposed model. Comparative analyses of the results reveal that in addition to simplicity of the proposed method, it provides a rather high degree of accuracy for real-world problems.
This paper presents results for impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of foundations in a layered half-space computed on the basis of a procedure that combines a consistent transmitting boundary with continued-fraction absorbing boundary conditions which are accurate and effective in modeling wave propagation in various unbounded domains. The effects of obliquely incident seismic waves in a layered half-space are taken into account in the formulation of the transmitting boundary. Using the numerical model, impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of rigid circular foundations on the surface of or embedded in a homogeneous half-space are computed and compared with available published results for verification of the procedure. Extrapolation methods are proposed to improve the performance in the very-low-frequency range and for the static condition. It is concluded from the applications that accurate analysis of foundation dynamics and soil-structure interaction in a layered half-space can be carried out using the enhanced consistent transmitting boundary and the proposed extrapolations.
The average probability of a lightning strike to transport aircraft operating in airline service has been estimated to be approximately one strike in every year (or one strike per 1,000 through 20,000 flight hours). The important thing is not the probability of a lightning strike to aircraft, but the fact that aircraft is struck by lightning. Therefore, lightning protection design for aircraft should be qualified and compliance with airworthiness standards related to lightning protection must be substantiated in the process of certification. In this paper, I studied means of compliance for lightning protection through analysis of some test cases, including the KC-100 airplane that firstly obtained civil type certificate in Korea. Based on this paper, it will be also necessary to study on the effect of lightning for space launch vehicles.

This paper describes basic structural design for the large floating crane barge of fixed undulation type. Structural analysis is performed to divide two parts because crane barge is composed two parts, crane part of jib boom back stay and back tower and barge part to support crane part. The structural strength for jib boom structure members are in compliance with JIS B 8821 and scantling of all barge structural members are in compliance with the requirement of KR (Korean Register of Shipping) Steel Barges and Rules for Classification of Steel Ships. For the structural analysis of large floating crane, MSC/NASTRAN & MSC/PATRAN software is used.
With the increase in the annealing temperature, the volume fraction of austenite phase increased and the volume fraction of ferrite phase decreased. In compliance with the addition of N, not only the volume fraction of austenite phase was increased but also the austenite structure was made larger. Volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase was increased by decreasing of the volume fraction of ferrite phase, with the increase in the aging time and in compliance with the addition of N. As increasing in volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase, tensile strength and hardness increased, while elongation and impact value decreased. Elongation slowly decreased and impact value rapidly decreased at the early stage of aging. By the added N, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and impact value was increased.

In the process of grinding a long slender type workpiece, such as ballscrew, by the external cylindrical grinding machine, the cylindricity of the workpiece depends on the distance of rests, the stiffness of supports, the diameter and material of workpiece. Conventionally the process needs to be supported by one or more rests to prevent static deflection and vibration. In this paper, the optimal position of the rests was investigated in order to minimize the cylindricity due to the static deflection, by taking compliance of the workpiece and structure into account. In order to obtain the optimal position of rests, a new modeling that is considering the spring effect of all support elements was established. Since it is so complicated to obtain the optimal position analytically for various conditions due to discontinuity, a genetic algorithm u as utilized.
This paper presents the influence coefficient method to predict the deflection of bump foil precisely in the sub-structure of AFB(air foil bearing). Heshmat has introduced the simple compliance model to calculate the deflection of bump foil. But this approach can not consider the deflection of bump foil at the edge of AFB, so elasto-hydrodynamic model is insufficient to analyze in case that the eccentricity ratio is greater than 1. Peng has used the average pressure and film thickness, but this approach is not also a realistic model. Influence coefficients of a bump is calculated by finite element method, and introduced in bump deflection equations of the performance analysis of air foil bearing. The effects of the influence coefficient on the bearing performance is discussed in detail for appropriate foil design.
This paper presents the theoretical model to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Foil deflection is restricted by friction of bumps. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foils is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bumps is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. This point give the difference from Heshmat's frictionless and simple compliance bump model. The fluid is modeled with the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by bump friction. This analysis technique would be extended to development of a high performance bearing.
