  • In this paper, a interpolation error concealment algorithm of motion compensated interpolated frame for motion compensated frame rate conversion to reduce the block artifacts caused by failure of conventional motion estimation based on block matching algorithm is proposed. Experimental results show good performance of the proposed scheme with significant reduction of the block artifacts.

  • In this paper, we presents a new MCDI(motion compensated difference image) coding method using CVQ(classifled vector quantization) whoes MCD(motion compensated difference) block is classified by proposed classifier using motion vector and compensated block The variance of MCD block is closely related with the magnitude of motion vector as well as the variance of compensated block, so using this property, we propose a new classifier. This scheme has no side information of the classifier what sub-codebook is selected, and simulation results show that the proposed method exhibits a good performance even when compared with a conventional method that requires classification bits.

  • The performance of Motion Compensated Discrete Cosine Transform (MC-DCT) video coding is improved by using the region adaptive subband image coding [18]. On the assumption that the video is acquired from the camera on a moving platform and the distance between the camera and the scene is large enough, both the motion of camera and the motion of moving objects in a frame are compensated. For the compensation of camera motion, a feature matching algorithm is employed. Several feature points extracted using a Sobel operator are used to compensate the camera motion of translation, rotation, and zoom. The illumination change between frames is also compensated. Motion compensated frame differences are divided into three regions called stationary background, moving objects, and newly emerging areas each of which is arbitrarily shaped. Different quantizers are used for different regions. Compared to the conventional MC-DCT video coding using block matching algorithm, our video coding scheme shows about 1.0-dB improvements on average for the experimental video samples.

  • A self-compensated water-hydrostatic bearing has advantages in bearing stiffness. In this paper, the mechanism is applied to hydrostatic journal bearing for achieving the high bearing stiffness. The finite element method is applied to analyze the load characteristics of the self-compensated journal bearing. From the analyzed results, it is confirmed that though the self-compensated journal bearing has higher load capacity and stiffness than conventional fixed capillary journal bearing, the merit is decreased in the case of high eccentricity, that is, a spindle system with self-compensated journal bearing must be designed to have the load capacity large enough. For improving the practicality, a rectangular type capillary is introduced and discussed. Theoretically analyzed results show that it has more advantages than the conventional annular type capillary in the practical usage. The experimental verification on the analysis method is performed, and the experimental results show good agreement with theoretical results.

  • Dynamic analysis of a transmission line which is compensated by a FACTS device such as STATCOM, SSSC and UPFC is carried out in this paper and the impacts on conventional line protection methods such as the DCPM (Differential Current Protection Method) and the DPM (Distance Protection Method) are reviewed. A refined DCRM is proposed to detect faults properly regardless of the FACTS operation. The proposed method is applied to a FACTS-compensated line with a variety of faults and is verified by simulation results. An adaptive DPM on a FACTS-compensated line was proposed previously in the literature. In order to emphasize the necessity of the modified DPM, the conventional DPM is applied to a FACTS-compensated system. Significant factors such as fault types, fault locations, and fault resistances as well as FACTS device types are considered for relaying setting.

  • A self-compensated water-hydrostatic bearing is well known to have advantages in stiffness. In this paper, its concept is extended to a hydrostatic journal bearing for achieving higher stiffness. The finite element method is applied to analyze the load characteristics of the self-compensated hydrostatic journal bearing. The analysis results reveal that the self-compensated journal bearing has higher load capacity and higher stiffness than conventional, fixed capillary journal bearings. and that this benefit degrades in the case of high eccentricity. Thus, a spindle system with self-compensated journal bearings must be designed to ensure a sufficiently large load capacity. A rectangular type capillary is also introduced with consideration of the practical application of the self-compensated hydrostatic journal bearing. Theoretical analysis results show that the rectangular type capillary is more beneficial than conventional annular type capillaries in practical use. The experimental verification on the analysis method is made to show that the experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical results.

  • Background: Liver cirrhosis causes substantial socio-economic burden and is one of the major severe liver diseases in Korea. Nonetheless, there is only a few studies that analyzes disease burden of liver cirrhosis in Korea. Such study must be carried out due to its increasing need from the invention of new drugs for chronic hepatitis and demand for cost-effectiveness analyses. Methods: Patient sample data with ensured representativeness was analyzed retrospectively to compare the medical costs and uses for patients with compensated cirrhosis and decompensated cirrhosis. Patient claims data that include K74 and K703 from the year of 2014 were selected. Within the selected data, decompensated cirrhosis patient was identified if complications such as ascites (R18), encephalopathy (B190), hepatic failure (K72), peritonitis (K65), or esophageal varices (I85) were included, and they were compared to compensated cirrhosis patients. Results: 6,565 patients were included in the analysis. The average cost per patient was 6,471,020 (SD 8,848,899) KRW and 2,173,203 (4,220,942) KRW for decompensated cirrhosis and compensated cirrhosis, respectively. For inpatients, the average hospitalized days was 38.0 (56.4) days and 27.2 (57.2) days for decompensated cirrhosis and compensated cirrhosis, respectively. For outpatients, the average number of visits was 8.7 (9.1) days and 5.3 (7.5) days for compensated cirrhosis and decompensated cirrhosis, respectively. Conclusion: Compared to compensated cirrhosis patients, decompensated cirrhosis patients had higher costs, especially for hospitalization, injection, examination, and drugs administrated within medical institutions.

  • A new motion compensated frame Interpolation (MCI) algorithm by block based motion estimation (BME) is proposed. The block for the BME is composed of a large overlapped block for practical object motion estimation (ME) and a small block (which has a coinciding center with the ME-block) for the more precise motion compensated image description. Pixels in the block for the ME are sub-sampled to reduce computational complexity. The proposed method is executed with the various ME-blocks which have different size and sub-sampling ratio, and compared to the conventional method.

  • A pressure compensated chamber of a pilot mining robot isolates and protects an electrical-electronic system from the ambient highly pressured water. Since the inner pressure of the chamber is compensated with outer water pressure using hydraulic oil and pressure compensator, there exists a pressure difference, less than 1 bar, between outer and inner surface. The structural safety of the chamber is obtained relatively easier than the canister type which inner pressure is kept as the atmospheric pressure. However, due to the adoption of box shape for space efficiency and usage of the transparent engineering plastic viewport for checking inner circumstance, the viewport can be largely deformed. This large deformation can cause an additional tensile force, called the prying force, to the bolt-flange connection parts of the viewport. In this paper, we suggest the structural design equation considering the prying action for designing the structure of a box-shape pressure compensated chamber.
