  • Genomic data is accumulating in public database at an unprecedented rate. Although presently dominated by the sequences of metazoan, plant, parasitic, and picoeukaryotic taxa, both expressed sequence tag (EST) and complete genomes of free-living algae are also slowly appearing. This wealth of information offers the opportunity to clarify many long-standing issues in algal and plant evolution such as the contribution of the plastid endosymbiont to nuclear genome evolution using the tools of comparative genomics and multi-gene phylogenetics. A particularly powerful approach for the automated analysis of genome data from multiple taxa is termed phylogenomics. Phylogenomics is the convergence of genomics science (the study of the function and structure of genes and genomes) and molecular phylogenetics (the study of the hierarchical evolutionary relationships among organisms, their genes and genomes). The use of phylogenetics to drive comparative genome analyses has facilitated the reconstruction of the evolutionary history of genes, gene families, and organisms. Here we survey the available genome data, introduce phylogenomic pipelines, and review some initial results of phylogenomic analyses of algal genome data.

  • Purpose - To accelerate economic cooperation, this study investigates trade structures of Korea and the United States and identifies trade discrepancies. Such discoveries can lead to increases in trade volume by improving policies, eventually uncovering ways for trade expansion. Research design, data, and methodology - The Index of trade intensity, from trade intensity theory, is used to analyze the trade decision factors. Even though specific factors should materialize in the analysis, realistically, concrete explanations are difficult as there are so many unsolved factors and diversifications. Results - First, the Index of A value/ B value positions Korean against the United States in terms of market share and Korea against world market share, which thereby reveals comparative market intensity. Second, Korea is taking comparative advantage of export specialization. Third, real comparative advantage indices are considerably improved since early 2000. Conclusions - This study uses quantitative measurements and trade intensity theory and trade specialization to come up with a comparative advantage index to see how inter-trade relations between Korea and the United States have changed over the past 10 years.

  • Purpose - This study, in seeking to understand the trade structure of both Korea and China, aims to strengthen Korea-China economic cooperation; it examines trade impediments by analyzing the problems affecting trade and addressing these problems, thereby discovering ways to expand trade between these countries. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - The index of trade intensity developed by the trade intensity theory (Kruger, 1997) is used to analyze the trade decision factors of both countries. Although specific factors should have materialized from the analysis of trade decision factors, determining concrete explanations is difficult in reality, as there are many unsolved and diverse factors. Results - First, the index of A value/B value is the index of Korean versus Chinese market share/Korean versus world market share, which is a measure of comparative market intensity. Second, Korea has a comparative advantage in export specialization and, conversely, China has a comparative advantage in import specialization. Third, compared to 2000, the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) indexes are considerably improved. Conclusions - This study used quantitative measurement for analysis, applying trade intensity theory, trade specialization, and RCA indexes to gauge how inter-trade relations have changed between Korea and China during the past 10 years (2000, 2005, and 2012).

  • Kuwaitis faced with as serious problems with respect to quality and equity in education. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Kuwaiti education in the 21 century knowledge society. It has its own problems and limits in addition to future possibilities. Adopting comparative approaches and idiographic methodology together, investigators firstly examines the Kuwaiti education in terms of political, economic, educational, and international aspects. In addition, we investigators outlined Kuwaiti education in its cultural identity. Necessary measures and policy recommendations were drawn finally according to the analysis.

  • The chloroplast (cp) is an autonomous plant organelle with an individual genome that codes for essential cellular functions. The architecture and gene content of the cp genome is highly conserved in angiosperms. The plastome of Corydalis belongs to the Papaveraceae family, and the genome is comprised of unusual rearrangements and gene content. Thus far, no extensive comparative studies have been carried out to understand the evolution of Corydalis chloroplast genomes. Therefore, the Corydalis platycarpa cp genome was sequenced, and wide-scale comparative studies were conducted using publicly available twenty Corydalis plastomes. Comparative analyses showed that an extensive genome rearrangement and IR expansion occurred, and these events evolved independently in the Corydalis species. In addition, the protein-coding genes accD and the ndh gene loss events occurred in the common ancestor of the Corydalis and sub-clade of the Corydalis lineage, respectively. The gene ndh lost in the Corydalis-sub clade species is distributed predominantly in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP) region. The molecular clock analysis suggests that the divergence time of all the ndh gene lost Corydalis sub-clade species occurred in the 44.31 - 15.71 mya. These results coincide very well with the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the Oligocene and Miocene periods, and maybe during this period, it probably triggered the radiation of the Corydalis species. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first large-scale comparative study of Corydalis plastomes and their evolution. The present study may provide insights into the plastome architecture and the molecular evolution of Corydalis species.

  • This study compares the relative effectiveness of affective factor(Ad attitude) and cognitive factor(Brand cognition) on brand attitude among three ad types - direct comparative, indirect comparative, and noncomparative ads. The results showed that in direct comparative advertising context the brand cognition is dominant in determining brand attitude. In indirect comparative advertising context brand cognition is also dominant in determining brand attitude, but the difference is less than direct comparative advertising. In noncomparative advertising context the ads attitude is dominant in determining brand attitude. According to research outcomes, it could be said that direct comparative advertising is more effective than indirect comparative advertising.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the general characteristics of sports for all through the patterns of sports for all policy and analysis of causal relation of the determinants. To achieve this goal, 26 countries among OECD 30 members which provide useful data sources were selected. The data were analyzed by Qualitative Comparative Analysis(QCA) with cluster analysis. GDP, leisure time, social expenditure, Gini's coefficient, poverty rate and tax burden ratio were used as casual variables for Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The findings of this study were as follows. First, three patterns were examined and Korea was classified into the pattern which has low sports for all participation and sportsclub participation. Second, as a result of Qualitative Comparative Analysis for analyzing the determinants of sports for all patterns, the pattern in which includes Korea showed that GDP, leisure time, social expenditure, tax burden ratio had negative relationship and Gini's coefficient, poverty rate had positive relationship.
