  • The main objective of this work was to study the efTect of pressed density of pellets prepared from an oxide powder on their fired density and to prove experimentally the parabolic relationship proposed by FORD. A-I6 and A-J7 alumina powders. which showed quite dlfrerent powder characteristics but were essentially very reactive powders, were employed, and a series of pelIets weIe pressed in a 1l.2mm diameter hardened steel die with a hydraulic press and a mechanically operated press in order to obtain a wide range of pressed demity. Density ranges from 35 to 65 % theoretical for A-16, and 46 to 66 % theoretical far A-17 were obtained and the highest pressed density achieved using lubricant was 67.8 % theoretical. CompactlOn mechanisms for A-16 and A-I 7 were deduced. Several plots of ($D_F$-$D_P$) against DpjDT showed reasonable parabola and temperature dependence and the maximum density increase occurred when the pressed density was approximately 50% theoretical. The parabolic relationship was confirmed by linear plot of ($D_F$-$D_P$) against (1-$\frac{D_P}{D_T})$).

  • The lower Permian jungseong Formation, Taebaegsan basin (Baegunsan Syncline), represents a coal-bearing siliciclastic succession which was later modified by the Songrim or Dabo orogeny. Sandstone perography and clay mineralogy were studied to understand the thermal history of the Jangseong Formation during basin evolution. Petrographic study indicates the Jangseong sandstones are composed of quartz, feldspar, lithic fragments (metamorphic and sedimetary), and varying proportions of matrix and cement. The dominance of quartz(<97%) over feldspar (<1%) and lithic fragments (<2%) classifies most Jangseong sandstones as quartz arenotes or quartzwackes, but lithic graywackes and sublithic arenite locally occur. The diagentic features of these sandstones include mechanical compaction, cemenation by quartz and clay minerals indentified in the Jangseong Formation by X-ray diffraction analysis are late-stage clay pore-filling. Clay minerals isdentified in the Jangseong Formation by X-ray diffaction analysis are illite, kaolinte, and pyrophyllite with a minor amount of chlorite and micas. The illite, kaolinite, and pyrophyllite appear to be largely autjigenic based on their well-crystallinity forms. There authigenic clay minerals form clay minerals form clay coats/rims and late-stage pore-filling cements, Illitecrystallinity shows that the Jangseong formation has been in late-diagenetic zone to early-epizone, which ranges in temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$. In assition, kaolinite-pyrophyllite transition suggests that paleotemperature of the formation has reached at least $265^{\circ}C$. Such temperatureis likely to be consistent with homogenixation temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz veins in the formation. Thus, the Jangseong Formation has been subjected to paleotemperature of about $265^{\circ}C$. The major heat source responsible for paleotemperature may be hydrothermal solutions. The passage of hydrothermal solutions was probably assisted by fractures created during the basin-modifying tectonism of the taebaegsan basin.

  • Hollow fiber (HF) membranes are gaining wide interest over flat membranes due to their compaction and high area to surface volume ratio. This work addresses the fabrication of HF from polysulfone (PS) and polyethersulfone (PES) using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent in addition to other additives to achieve desired characteristics. The semi-pilot spinning system includes jacketed vessel, four spinneret block, coagulation and washing baths in addition to dryer and winder. Different parameters affecting dry-wet spinning phase inversion process were investigated. Dope compositions of PES, NMP and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) of varying molecular weights as additive were addressed. Some critical parameters of importance were also investigated. Those include dope flow rate, air gap, coagulation & washing baths and drying temperatures. The measured dope viscosity was in the range from 1.7 to 36.5 Pa.s. Air gap distance was adjusted from 20 to 45 cm and coagulation bath temperature from 20 to $46^{\circ}C$. The HF membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and mechanical properties. Results indicated prevalence of finger like structure and average surface roughness from about 29 to 78.3 nm. Profile of stress strain characteristics revealed suitability of the fibers for downstream interventions for fabrication of thin film composite membrane. Different empirical correlations were formulated which enable deeper understanding of the interaction of the above mentioned variables. Data of pure water permeability (PWP) confirmed that the fabricated samples fall within the microfiltration (MF)-ultrafiltration (UF) range of membrane separation.

  • The effects of relative humidity on the properties of the porous $ZrO_2$ ceramics were investigated in terms of the curing behavior of phenolic resin as a binder. The $ZrO_2$ powders containing 5wt% of phenolic resin were conditioned in a consistent chamber condition at a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ and different humidity levels (25, 50, 75, and 95%) for 1 h. The exposure of humid atmosphere caused changes of density and microstructure in the green bodies. The higher level the powders were exposed to the humid atmosphere, the lower green density was obtained and the more irregular microstructure was observed due to aggregation by the curing of phenolic resin. After firing, the porosity of specimens has risen from 35.7% to 38.1% and Young's modulus has declined in response to the variation of green density. These results could be explained by the degree of resin cure which was associated with the area under the exothermic peak enclosed by a baseline of DSC thermogram curve. Also, the curing behavior of phenolic resin according to relative humidity has been confirmed by decrease of ether groups which have interacted with the phenolic-OH group and the hexamine as a curing agent. Consequently, it could be demonstrated that increase the relative humidity during fabrication of porous $ZrO_2$ diminished the compaction and properties of specimens after firing owing to curing of phenolic resin.

  • In this study, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to decide three kinds of material property of vibration proof rubber with the unique characteristic of non-linear and large deformation. As well, three types of hardness (Hs 50, 55, 60) were compared with the result of fatigue tests, fatigue life was able to be predicted. The request for fatigue life becomes strict more and more as increasing stress under conditions like a compaction, high load and high temperature for parts because it is main characteristics of rubber mount for automotive. Regarding to the fatigue life under dynamic deformation condition, it can be predicted as checking forced deformation extends and its frequency and its strain-life curve. As for material property tests of uniaxial tension test, uniaxial compression test, pure shear test, Ogden model was used for FEA by observing relations between stress and strain's rate as curve fitting. As a result of FEA, fatigue life for rubber mount was predicted and accorded well with the experimental data of fatigue test with hourglass specimens. In addition, its property of the predictable fatigue life method suggested in this study was accorded well with the experimental data by comparing the predicted fatigue life of FEA with the result of fatigue test for rubber component of engine rubber mount.

  • PURPOSES : Hollows are easily made, and bearing capacity can be lowered near underground structures because sublayers of pavement settle for a long time due to difficult compaction at the position. If loadings are applied in this condition, distresses may occur in pavement and, as the result, its lifespan can decrease due to the stress larger than that expected in design phase. Although reinforced slab is installed on side of box culvert to minimize the distresses, length of the reinforced slab is fixed as 6m in Korea without any theoretical consideration. The purpose of this paper is investigating the behavior of concrete pavement according to the cover depth of the box culvert ad the length of the reinforced slab. METHODS : The distresses of concrete pavement slabs were investigated and cover depth was surveyed at position where the box culverts were located in expressways. The concrete pavements including the box culverts were modeled by finite element method and their behaviors according to the soil cover depth were analyzed. Wheel loading was applied after considering self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete pavement slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where a test road was located. After installing pavement joint at various positions, behavior of the pavement was analyzed by changing the soil cover depth and length of the reinforced slab. RESULTS : As the result, the tensile stress developed in the pavement slab according to the joint position, cover depth, and reinforced slab length was figured out. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and economic design of the concrete pavement including the box culvert is expected by the research results.

  • The densification behavior and strength of sintered reaction bonded silicon nitrides (SRBSN) that contain $Lu_2O_3-SiO_2$ additives were improved by the addition of fine Si powder. Dense specimens (relative density: 99.5%) were obtained by gas-pressure sintering (GPS) at $1850^{\circ}C$ through the addition of fine Si. In contrast, the densification of conventional specimens did not complete at $1950^{\circ}C$. The fine Si decreased the onset temperature of shrinkage and increased the shrinkage rate because the additive helped the compaction of green bodies and induced the formation of fine $Si_3N_4$ particles after nitridation and sintering at and above $1600^{\circ}C$. The amount of residual $SiO_2$ within the specimens was not strongly affected by adding fine Si powder because most of the $SiO_2$ layer that had formed on the fine Si particles decomposed during nitridation. The maximum strength and fracture toughness of the specimens were 991 MPa and $8.0MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • Although urban soils must be well understood in order to ensure their conservation and optimum use, these intensively managed and disturbed soils have not been extensively investigated up to now. Urban soils from forest, lawn, streetside, and bare ground and under pavement in Inchon had high bulk density as a result of widespread trampling-induced soil compaction. The various urban soils including forests showed lower water content and higher temperature as compared with rural forest soil. Chemically, soils from urban areas had an unusual neutral pH and low organic matter content. Total bacterial numbers in urban soils was only 5∼50% of that in the rural forest soil. An analysis of stepwise multiple regression revealed that soil organic matter was the most important predictor variable on total bacterial number. The dehydrogenase activity of most urban soils was not significantly different from that of rural forest soil, whereas the microbial activity of soils under pavement was lower. Our investigations show that inadequate organic matter of highly compacted soils has adversely affected the abundance of microorganisms involving nutrient cycling in urban soils.

  • The porous $Mg_3Sb_2$ based compounds with 60~70% of relative density were prepared by powder compaction at room temperature and reactive liquid phase sintering at 1023 K for 4hrs. The stoichiometric $Mg_3Sb_2$ compounds were synthesized from elemental Sb and Mg powder in the mixing range of 61~63 at% Mg. The increased scattering effect due to the micro-pores reduced the mobility of the charge carrier and the phonon, which caused the electrical conductivity and the thermal conductivity to decrease, respectively. But the scattering effect was greater for the electrical conductivity than for the thermal conductivity. Excess Mg alloyed in the $Mg_3Sb_2$ compounds decreased the electrical conductivity, but had no effect on the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, the large increase of the Seebeck coefficient was the result of a decrease in the charge carrier density due to the excess Mg. Dimensionless figure of merit of the porous $Mg_3Sb_2$ compound reached a maximum value of 0.28 at 61 at% Mg. The obtained value was similar to that of $Mg_3Sb_2$ compounds having little pores.

  • One of the important phase of black titanium oxide is $Ti_4O_7$ which has the excellent properties such as the greatest electrical conductivity among the titanium oxides, chemical resistance against acidic and alkalic conditions and electro-wave absorption etc., so it has been considered as a promising material to be used widely all over the parts of industries. In this study, $Ti_4O_7$ phase was successfully synthesized by the reaction of TiO$_2$/ Mg system. With the change of the mole of TiO$_2$to Mg, the most excellent blackness was appeared in the 3.5 mole which was the smaller amount than the stoichiometric 4.0 mole. In addition, we found that the blackness decreased as the mole ratio of reactent increased. With decreasing particle size of magnesium, blackness of titanium oxide increased. The reaction property was changed with the compaction pressure, and optimum pressure was found to be 10 MPa. At 55$0^{\circ}C$ of reduction temperature, the blackness increased as the reaction time increased. The blackness of synthesized black titanium oxide was 14 to 18, and the average particle size was 0.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
