Nanocomposites prepared by PP(Polypropylene) based compatibilizers modified with GMA(Glycidyl methacrylate) and HEMA(Hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were used to investigate the clay dispersion and mechanical properties of them. XRD patterns showed the improvement of dispersion through clay intercalation according to the compatibilizers and comonomer. GMA modified polypropylene gave the best mechanical properties of the nanocomposite with respect to the balance of Flexural modulus (FM) and Notched izod impact strength(IS). Compatibilizers with comonoer commonly have higher grafting yield and lower melt flow rate than those of comonomer free. And they enhanced the clay dispersion and mechanical properties of nanocomposites. Optimum ratio of monomer to comonomer for nanocomposites having better mechanical properties is about 1 to 1 ratio.
In this study, solvent-free pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) using acrylic copolymer was prepared by UV radiation to investigate the effect of comonomer on the adhesion properties. Adhesive force value of PSA was increased with the amount of comonomer having shorter side chain due to the enhanced intrinsic surface energy. Peel and shear strength were also influenced by chemical properties of comonomer. The addition of comonomer, ethyl and n-butyl acrylate allows PSA sample with high peel and shear strength. This nay be explained in terms of correlation between loss modulus and glass transition temperature of PSA. As the addition of acrylic comonomers with long side chain length decreases the loss modulus of PSA, the deformation of PSA can not be inhibited.
The copolymerization characteristics of a newly-synthesized catalyst, $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$, and its analogue, $rac-Me_2Si(Ind)_2ZrCl_2$, were examined in the ethylene/1-octene copolymerization while varying the concentration of 1-octene in the reaction mixture. The activity of $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was decreased with increase of comonomer concentration, which is different from the usual comonomer effect of the metallocene catalysts with a bridge structure. The contents of 1-octene in the copolymer from the catalyst with 2-p-tolyl substituent were higher than those from the catalyst without that substituent. The melting point, crystallinity, and molecular weight decreased with comonomer content which was more apparent for $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst.
To improve the quality of coated paper, the continuous research to the coating components and development of alternative latices is required. Recently, amphoteric latex is getting a great concern due to their changable properties of surface charge through controlling pH and some methods have been tried to prepare amphoteric latices. This study was carried out to synthesize amphoteric latex using seeding polymerization method with low concentration emulsifier. Styrene was used as a main monomer in addition to acrylonitrile for a hydrophilic comonomer. acrylic acid for a anionic comonomer and N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate for a cationic comonomer. Particle size and viscosity of latex were greatly affected by addition of acrylic acid and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. Negative charge of latex in alkali condition was changed to zero to positive charge in around pH 4.
Bimodal high-density polyethylenes with different comonomer type and content were synthesized by polymerization of ethylene using Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Their structure and properties were studied using GPC, NMR, DSC and tensile test. It was found that ethylene/1-hexene copolymer exhibits higher tensile strength and elongation at break than that of ethylene/1-butylene copolymer with similar comonomer content. The molecular weight decreases as the comonomer content of the polymer increases. Short chain branching affects the crystallinity and thus the morphology and consequently the mechanical properties of the corresponding bimodal high-density polyethylenes. After SSA treated, the multiple endothermic peaks were observed. Multiple endothermic peaks are mainly attributed to the heterogeneity of ethylene sequence length and lamellar thickness. The difference of broadness index indicates that SCB distribution of polyethylene containing higher comonomer content has improved uniformity.

The properties of polystyrene and styrenic copolymer nanocomposites containing carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanoclays were studied. Polystyrene and styrenic copolymer containing styrene and vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (SVTAC) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene/CNT/clay and SVTAC/CNT/clay nanocomposites with various concentrations of CNT and different types of clay were prepared via mixing of polystyrene emulsion and clay. SVTAC/CNT nanocomposites showed a better electrical conductivity than PS/CNT nanocomposites. Nanocomposites with more surfactant during polymerization showed a better electrical conductivity than the ones with less surfactant. These indicated the positive effect of comonomer and surfactant on the electrical conductivity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to analyze the state of CNT dispersion. TEM results showed that CNT loading, comonomer composition and amount of surfactant affected the final dispersion of CNT in nanocomposites. In order to confirm the effects of CNT loading, comonomer composition and the amount of surfactant on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties, DSC and DMA analyses were conducted.
The phosphorus comonomer [(6-oxido-6H-dibenz<1,2>oxaphosphorin-6-yl)methyl]-methyl butane-dioate (DOP-MBDA) was synthesized through the addition reaction of dimethyl itaconate (DMI) with 9,10-dihydro9-oxa-10-phosphaphenan threne-10-oxide (DOP). A series of novel flame retardant poly(butylene terephthalate)s (PBTs) containing different amounts of phosphorus were prepared using DOP-MBDA as a comonomer. These novel polymers were characterized by $^{1}H-NMR$, IR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The novel phosphoruscontaining poly(butylene terephthalate)s, referred to as FR-PBTs, exhibited interesting thermal and mechanical behavior, as well as superior flame retardancy. These properties are attributed to the effect of incorporating the rigid structure of DOP-MBDA and the pendant phosphorus group into the poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) homopolymer. The UL 94-V2 rating could be achieved with this novel flame retardant PBT, which has a phosphorus content as low as $0.5 wt\%$, and the FR-PBTs emitted less fumes and toxic gases than the PBT homopolymer.
To improve rubbing fastness of the printed fabrics, the binder polymers for Digital Textile Printing(DTP) pigment inks were synthesized with miniemulsion polymerization using various acrylic monomers, which are MMA(Methyl methacrylate), BA(Butyl acrylate), and Self-crosslinking monomers, such as NEA(N-Ethylol acrylamide) and MAA (Methacrylic acid). The acrylic monomer compositions were varied when synthesizing the binder polymers and their particle size distributions, average molecular weights, and Tgs were investigated. The prepared binder polymers were applied to prepare Cyan, Black, Yellow and Magenta pigment ink for DTP and the prepared inks were used to dye cotton fabrics. Then, color strength, and rubbing fastness were also investigated to study the effect of the comonomer compositions of the binder polymer on the color strength and rubbing fastness of the resulting pigment inks.
Electropolymerization of 2-vinylnaphthalene (2-VN) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) with high radiation resistance property was conducted on the surfaces of carbon fibers by using a nonaqueous solution of comonomers dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide containing sodium nitrate as a supporting electrolyte. The fabrication of carbon fiber/2-VN/MMA prepreg was performed electrochemically in 1:1 comonomer solution. Electropolymerization was conduced by changing the current density, initial comonomer concentration, and reaction time. The weight gain on the surface of the carbon fibers was measured by thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). The highest weight gain of 50 wt% was obtained at 600mA/g~800mA/g current density range, but the weight gain was rapidly decreased above 800mA/g current density. The weight gain was increased with the concentration of comonomer, while the concentration of electrolyte had almost no effect on the weight gain. At 300mA/g current density, weight gain rate was increased abruptly to the initial 30 minutes of reaction time. After that the rate was decreased due to the generation of gas bubbles. In order to check the effect of coated polymers on the radiation resistance, morphology changes before and after $\gamma$-ray irradiation was investigated for the composites.
UV irradiated acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) are prepared to be used for thermal pad in plasma display panel(PDP). The effect of the chemical structure of side-chain in comonomer and of crosslinking agent on wet-out property of acrylic PSAs in wide temperature range were investigated. The correlationship between viscoelastic behavior and adhesion properties, such as tack and peel strength, was also studied. The experimental results supported that wet-out and adhesion properties of acrylic PSAs were enhanced inversely proportional to side-chain length of comonomer in wide temperature range. The peel energy clearly increased in acrylic PSAs prepared by using di(ethylene glycol) dimethylacrylate (DEGDMA) for crosslinking agent. The results might be due to the difference in the glass transition temperature and viscoelastic behavior of acrylic PSAs.
