  • The commutation operation of the current source converter for switched reluctance motor drives is analyzed in this paper. The commutation operation in the current source converter consists of two modes. At turn-off of phase switch, the phase current decreases sinusoidally, and the sum of two phase currents during commutation period is constant. At this time, the capacitor voltage increases quickly with changing polarity and decreases slowly when another phase switches turn on or off. Frequency of step-down DC chopper in the current source converter is low because of the dump such as BJTs and GTOs are possible as phase switches instead of Power MOSFET and IGBTS. They may result in reductions of conduction losses and manufacturing cost in the current source converter comparing to the voltage source converter of SRM.

  • This work investigates the commutation characteristics of the current flowing through an electrical-contact-type switch to the semiconductor switch branch during the breaking operation of hybrid DC switchgear. A simple, reliable, low-cost natural commutation method is proposed, and the current commutation characteristics are analyzed in accordance with the conduction voltage drop of the semiconductor switch branch through experiments. A prototype 400 V/10 A class natural commutation type hybrid DC switchgear is set up. Its performance is verified, and its characteristics are analyzed.

  • In this paper, a matrix converter with improved low frequency output performance is proposed by achieving a one-step commutation owing to a general commutation circuit applicable to n-phase to m-phase matrix converters. The commutation circuit consists of simple resister and capacitor components, leading to a very stable, reliable and robust operation. Also, it requires no extra sensing information to achieve commutation, allowing for a one-step commutation like a conventional dead time commutation. With the dead time commutation strategy applied, the distortion caused by commutation delay is analyzed and compensated, therefore leading to better output linear behavior. In this paper, detailed commutation procedures of the R-C commutation circuit are analyzed. A selection of specific semiconductor switches and commutation circuit components is also provided. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed commutation method is verified through a two-phase to single-phase matrix converter and the feasibility of the compensation approach is shown by an open loop space vector modulated three-phase matrix converter with a passive load.

  • This paper presents the current-fed inverter of a TGV-K traction system with thyristor switches using phase control and commutation techniques. The current-fed inverters have two modes of operation which consist of forced commutation and natural commutation. In forced commutation mode, at speed of less than 120km/h, commutation is forced by means of the commutation capacitors and the thyristors. Above 120km/h, the thyristors operate in natural commutation mode. according to the voltages between phases of the motors. In this paper. the power conversion theory of the TGV-K traction system and the control principle of the converter and current-fed inverter are discussed.

  • A new current source inverter (CSl) with dc-side commutation and load-side energy recovery circuit is proposed with analysis and explanation of the circuit operation. Proposed inverter overcomes the most drawbacks of the conventional CSI's - high device voltage stress, low operating frequency range, large commutation capacitance, etc. - by employing simultaneous recovery and commutation concept. The new CSI employs only one commutation capacitor and it can be built with considerably low cost. The commutation energies are temporarily stored into a large dc capacitor and recovered to the load side, thus the device voltage stress is low and the efficiency is high in the proposed inverter. Computer simulation results are given at the steady state, and a guideline determining the commutation circuit is given.

  • This paper presents an improved Zero Voltage/Zero Current Switching (ZVZCS) commutation cell with minimum additional components, which provides soft switching at both turn-on and turn-off of main and auxiliary switches as well as diodes in a PWM DC/DC converter. The proposed soft-switching technique is suitable for not only minority, but also majority carrier semiconductor devices. The auxiliary switch of the proposed ZVZCS commutation cell is in parallel with the main switch, and therefore, the main switch and the diode are free of currentstress. The operation principles of the proposed ZVZCS commutation cell are theoretically analyzed using the PWM boost converter topology as an example. The validity of the PWM boost converter topology with the proposed ZVZCS commutation cell is verified through theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results.

  • The load commutated current source inverter(LCCSI) with GTO-DC source forced commutation is described in this Paper. GTO-DC source forced commutation assures the stability of commutation below critical frequency determined by output capcaitor and it also gives the oppotunity of PWM operation for reducing resonant harmonic components. he simulation results clearly show hat the proposed commutation circuit works well in the resonance phenomenon between output capacitor and machine leakage inductance.

  • In this paper, a single phase matrix converter circuit with novel commutation technique is proposed. With commercial IGBT modules, the proposed converter is quite compact in structure and easy to build. The applied commutation strategy introduces a simple RC circuit as commutation aid without need for sensing information, leading to stable and reliable operation. The modulation method is explained; the detailed commutation procedure is illustrated. Finally, the simulation results show the validity and verification of the proposed single phase matrix converter.
