  • For the purpose of finding how the annoyance response to aircraft noise is affected by non-noise variables, the questionnaire survey is conducted around the Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, Korea. The non-noise variables used in this research are divided into two categories; demographic and attitudinal variables. The result of the survey suggests that aircraft noise annoyance is not affected to an important extent by other noise sources(e.g., road traffic noise and community noise etc.) and the demographic variables (sex, age, education, occupation, dwelling type and length of residence). It has been found that it is affected to an important extent by the attitudinal variables such as complaints.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the effects of physical activity on musculoskeletal outcomes in older Koreans. Methods: Experimental studies were retrieved from the search engines (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane, RISS, KISS, and KoreaMed). The selected studies for analysis were 27 articles of musculoskeletal outcomes (gait, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, grip strength, endurance, body fat, and weight) from 515 articles. Results: The most common type of physical activity was a resistance exercise. There were significant improvements in gait (71.4%), muscle strength (86.7%), flexibility (63.6%), balance (72.2%), grip strength (71.4%), endurance (71.4%), body fat (57.1%), and weight (28.6%). The activity programs that apply over 150 minutes a week showed greater improvement of 69.5% than 65.0% from those did not meet the guidelines totally. Conclusion: Based on the review, we conclude that regular physical activity in the elderly may improve the musculoskeletal outcomes. To be more effective programs, it is necessary to meet the guidelines of 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activities on 5 days per week for the elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Korean traditional dance exercise on physical health (BMI; body mass index, BP; blood pressure, VC; vital capacity, TC; total cholesterol, HDL; high-density lipoprotein, TG; triglyceride), self-efficacy and stress in elderly women. A quasi-experimental research design(one group pretest and posttest) was used for this study. Participants were recruited in a metropolitan city and a total of 43 community dwelling elderly women completed the 12-week Korean traditional dance exercise program. Descriptive statistics and paired t-tests were used in the data analysis by SPSS/WIN 12.0. After the Korean traditional dance exercise program there was a significant difference in BMI, VC, TC, HDL, stress and self-efficacy. There were, however, no significant changes in BP, and TG level after completing this program. This study suggests that Korean traditional dance exercise may be one of the effective nursing interventions for elderly women.

  • Purse: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a laughter therapy on mental health promoting like depression, laughing index of elderly. Methods: The study was conducted based on the non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participations included 12 older adults in the control group and 11 in the experiment group. Data was collected from October 1 to November 22, 2013. Experimental group participated in laughter therapy six times, once a week for 60 minutes of each session. Questionnaires were used to measure pretest and posttest levels of depression and laughing index. Results: At the end of six-week intervention, depression score (z=-2.95 p=.003) and laughter index score (z=-2.81 p=.005) was significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Futhermore, there was a significant difference in the depression scores of the experiment group at the posttest, but no signigicant difference was found between the two groups. Conclusion: The study results suggest that the laughter therapy is an effective intervention to reduce the depression but helpful to enhance the laughing index. Therefore, it is expected that laughter therapy will serve as an emotional nursing intervention for elderly patients with depression.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to identify prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS) and its associations with sleep habits, sleep problems, depression, subjective health status and obesity in community dwelling adults. Method: Data was collected from adults aged 20-59 years by random sampling. Subjects completed a questionnaire which was composed of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and questions that included items about sleep habits, sleep problems, subjective health status and sociodemographic characteristics. Height and weight were measured for calculation of body mass index. The statistical analyses was based on 3,302 adults (51.5% males and 48.5% females). Descriptive statistics, univariate logistic regression and multiple logistic regression were used. Result: The prevalence of EDS was 17.1% Multiple logistic regression showed that the associated factors of EDS were depression, obesity, dissatisfaction with sleep time, irregular sleep, and habitual snoring. Depression was the most significant associated factor(adjusted odds ratio for severe depression=2.27, 95% Confidence Interval=1.73-2.96). Conclusion: EDS is a common symptom in adults. Our finding suggested that persons with a complaint of EDS should be completely assessed for depression and obesity as well as sleep problems.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify the prevalence of postprandial hypotension (PPH) and risk factors for PPH in Korean elderly people. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with community dwelling and nursing home residents. The blood pressure of 162 adults aged 65 yr or older was measured before meal as a baseline and then at 15 min intervals from immediately after the meal through 90 min after the meal. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression with the SPSS WIN 14.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: The prevalence of PPH was 29% and the PPH occurred immediately after the meal continuously through 90 min after the meal. The biggest drop in systolic blood pressure occurred at 45 min after the meal. Risk factors for PPH were age, base line systolic blood pressure, and presence of cardiovascular disease. Conclusion: To prevent side effects of PPH such as falls and syncope, nurses should provide careful management of PPH and prohibit activities until at least 90 min after a meal. We also recommend that risk of PPH should be included in fall prevention guidelines for elderly people.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test the psychometric properties of the newly developed instrument, Meaning in Life, for elderly Korean people. Methods: Ten older adults participated in the qualitative research used to develop the initial items. Participants for the psychometric testing were 371 community-dwelling older adults. Validity and reliability analyses included content, construct, and criterion-related validities, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Results: The Meaning in Life Scale consisted of 12 items with three distinct factors; value of life, source of life, and will to live, which explained 86.7% of the total variance. A three-factor structure was validated by confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion-related validity was supported by comparison with the Purpose in Life Test (r=.74). Reliabilities were secured with test-retest reliability of Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) .85 and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient .90. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that this instrument is useful to measure meaning in life in Korean elders.

  • This study analyzes the architectural characteristics of Godin's Social Palace system of ideal housing for laborers during the 19th century. Utopian socialists in the first half of the 19th century proposed different solutions to reform their chaotic capitalist society, in response to the maladies of the Industrial Revolution. Fourier designed an ideal housing referred to as the Phalanstere, in which residences coexisted in a cooperative society. His disciples tried in vain to make this ideal housing system real. The only realization of this type of ideal housing was called Godin's Social Palace, which was constructed in Guise, France. The main architectural characteristics of Godin's Social Palace are as follows: dwelling units in consideration of function and expansion are applied basically in the housing. Further, a natural ventilation system is applied between housing and courtyard, and water supply is established in the housing. In Particular, natural lighting and artificial illumination are used in the entire building appropriately. In addition, a device which promotes a community between inhabitants is established. As for such modern facilities and social devices, inhabitants were able to live a more comfortable life. Hence, it is confirmed to have been one of the important factors for sustaining the Social Palace for more than 100 years.

  • As a part of acoustical design, it is often necessary to quantify aspects of an existing environment and to predict the result of adding an acoustical treatment. The most common sources of exterior noise, also termed as environmental noise,(or community noise) are traffic noise, air craft noise, industrial noise, etc. Transportation(air, road, and rail)noise is the dominant and most common source of noise exposure in residential neighborhoods, and the annoyance is its most consequential effect. The road traffic noise becomes aggravated due to the rapid increase of vehicles. It has a great effect on the dwelling environment. Therefore we investigate the characteristics and sources of the road traffic noise through grasping the status of the road traffic noise. In the present study, preceding studies investigated the noise level of urban areas in Seoul were reviewed and the noise level of urban areas in Seoul was measured at first, fifth, tenth, and nineteenth floor for two days of weekdays and two days of weekend.
