  • To establish the environmentally friendly biological control of two-spotted spider mites (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae, in exported strawberry greenhouses, the TSSM density reduction efficiency of chemical and biological control measures was compared in commercial, exported strawberry greenhouses. In the biological control greenhouse, only Phytoseiulus persimilis, a natural enemy of TSSM, was released, and the chemical control greenhouse was only sprayed with commercial chemical pesticides. The density of each developmental stage of TSSM was higher in the chemical control greenhouse than in the biological control greenhouse. The management costs were lower for the biological control greenhouse than the chemical control greenhouse. These results suggest that it is possible to effectively control TSSM using P. pesrsimilis in exported strawberry greenhouses.

  • Monthly variations of radiative forcing (RF) and mean temperature changes by greenhouse gases emitted from commercial aircraft were estimated based on the simplified expression at four international airports (Incheon, Gimpo, Jeju, and Gimhae Airports) during the years of 2009~2010. The highest RF and mean temperature change in the study area occurred at Incheon Airport, whereas the lowest RF and mean temperature change at Gimhae Airport. During 2009~2010, the mean RF and mean temperature change estimated from aircraft $CO_2$ emissions at Incheon Airport were approximately 30.0 $mW/m^2$ and $0.022^{\circ}K$, respectively. The mean RF and mean temperature changes caused by other greenhouse gas $N_2O$ was significantly small (<<0.1 $mW/m^2$ and << $1{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}K$). Meanwhile, $CH_4$ emissions caused negative mean RF ($-4.45{\times}10^{-3}mW/m^2$ at Incheon Airport) and the decrease of mean temperature ($-3.83{\times}10^{-6}^{\circ}K$) due to consumption of atmospheric $CH_4$ in the aircraft engine.

  • In Korean agriculture, an automatic environment control system for greenhouse is essential to save labor and to increase the quality of products. The existing environment monitoring systems have weighed on greenhouse growers and researchers because of their high cost and difficult applications. Many sensors are widely used for monitoring the greenhouse environment, but most of commercial sensors are expensive and not suitable for use in greenhouses. Thus , the development of an environment monitoring system for exclusive use in greenhouses is essential . The objective of this study was to develop modular environment monitoring systems, which are low-cost , reliable and easy -to -use. The results showed that the sensors for indoor and outdoor environments and nutrient solution had the ranges and accuracies appropriate for use in greenhouses. Also the modular environment systems developed showed a satisfactory performance in terms of stability and reliability in the measurement and acquisition of the greenhouse environment data.

  • The objective of the present study is to identify the applicability of a low pressure fogging system for cooling commercial tomato greenhouse. In particular, the cooling system in this experiment utilizes low pressure spray nozzles which were developed in Korea recently. The experimental result that the temperature in fog-cooled greenhouse was lower than the non-cooled greenhouse showed the cooling effect by the low pressure fogging system. But because the relative humidity in fog-cooled greenhouse was comparatively low, the satisfactory cooling effect could be acquired by narrowing the space of fog nozzles and extending fogging time to supply more fog spray quantity. The variation of temperature distribution in fog-cooled greenhouse along timelag was insignificant during short time, but that was great during long period of day. This result showed the variation of temperature along timelag was slight by fog cooling but great by other factors like radiation, ventilation, air flow, etc. The advanced operation technology of fog system was required to reduce the variation of temperature along time lag. We plan to suggest the advanced installation and operation technology of low pressure fogging system for cooling commercial tomato greenhouse by further experiments in near future.

  • Purpose: As application-specific wireless sensor networks are gaining popularity, this paper discusses the development and field performance of the GHAN, a greenhouse area network system to monitor, control, and access greenhouse microenvironments. GHAN, which is an upgraded system, has many new functions. It is an intelligent wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) system for next-generation greenhouses, which enhances the state of the art of greenhouse automation systems and helps growers by providing them valuable information not available otherwise. Apart from providing online spatial and temporal monitoring of the greenhouse microclimate, GHAN has a modified vapor pressure deficit (VPD) fuzzy controller with an adaptive-selective mechanism that provides better control of the greenhouse crop VPD with energy optimization. Using the latest soil-matrix potential sensors, the GHAN system also ascertains when, where, and how much to irrigate and spatially manages the irrigation schedule within the greenhouse grids. Further, given the need to understand the microclimate control dynamics of a greenhouse during the crop season or a specific time, a statistical assessment tool to estimate the degree of optimality and spatial variability is proposed and implemented. Methods: Apart from the development work, the system was field-tested in a commercial greenhouse situated in the region of Punjab, India, under different outside weather conditions for a long period of time. Conclusions: Day results of the greenhouse microclimate control dynamics were recorded and analyzed, and they proved the successful operation of the system in keeping the greenhouse climate optimal and uniform most of the time, with high control performance.

  • Local governments are establishing their own greenhouse gas reduction goal and are playing a important role to respond to climatic changes. However, there are difficulties in quantitative analyses such as estimation of future greenhouse gas emission and computation of reduction potential, which are procedures required to establish mid to long term strategies to realize of low carbon society by each local governments. Also, reduction measures must reflect characteristics of each local government, since the reduction power of each local government can differ according to characteristics of each. In order to establish strategies that reflect characteristics of local governments, types of greenhouse gas emission from cities were classified largely into residential city, commercial city, residential commercial city, agriculture and fishery city, convergence city, and industrial city. As a result of analyzing basic unit of greenhouse gas emission by local government during 2007 in terms of per population, household and GRDP based on the type classification, significant results were deduced for each type. To manage the amount of the national greenhouse gas, reduction measures should be focused on the local governments that emits more than the average of each type's GHG emission.

  • This study calculated monthly and sectoral (for industry, energy industry, transport, residential, commercial and public sectors) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Seoul, Korea from 1999 until 2009 with following the IPCC 2006 Guideline for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories through an analysis on available monthly data of fossil fuel and electricity consumption for the period. The time series analysis showed that GHG emissions had significant cyclical pattern season by season with the highest peak in August and the lowest peak in January throughout the period. The analysis on monthly and sectoral energy consumption showed that residential, commercial and public sectors had emitted about 65% of total GHG emissions of Seoul and had consumed more energy in winter for heating. About 30% GHG of Seoul was emitted from transport sector but its monthly energy consumption showed irregular pattern and it consumed 80% petroleum (in 2009) of Seoul. Hopefully together with further study on this subject, it is expected that this study can be used as basic data for various research regarding Greenhouse gas baseline emission, energy consumption pattern and estimation for future GHG emission of Seoul.

  • Biological control of important fungal diseases such as Phytophthora blight of red pepper, gary mold rot of vegetables, and powdery mildew of many crops was attempted using an antagonistic bacterium, Bacillus sp. AC-1 in greenhouses and fields. The antagonistic bacterium isolated from the rhizosphere soils of healthy red pepper plant was very effective in the inhibition of mycelial growth of plant pathogenic fungi in vitro including Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani, Pyricularia oryzae, Botrytis cinerea, Valsa mali, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium ultimum, Alternari mali, Helminthosporium oryzae, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Culture filtrate of antagonistic Bacillus sp. AC-1 applied to pot soils infested with Phytophthora capsici suppressed the disease occurrence better than metalaxyl application did until 37 days after treatment in greenhouse tests. Treatments of the bacterial suspension on red pepper plants also reduced the incidence of Phytophthora blight in greenhouse tests. In farmers' commercial production fields, however, the controlling efficacy of the antagonistic bacteria was variable depending on field locations. Gray mold rot of chinese chives and lettuce caused by Botrytis cinerea was also controlled effectively in field tests by the application of Bacillus sp. AC-1 with control values of 79.7% and 72.8%, respectively. Spraying of the bacterial suspension inhibited development of powdery mildew of many crops such as cucumber, tobacco, melon, and rose effectively in greenhouse and field tests. The control efficacy of the bacterial suspension was almost same as that of Fenarimol used as a chemical standard. Further experiments for developing a commercial product from the antagonistic bacteria and for elucidating antagonistic mechanism against plant pathogenic fungi are in progress.

  • Over recent years, the interest for vegetables and fruits in all seasons and places has much increased, from where diverse countries have directed to the commercial production in greenhouse. In this article, we propose an algorithm based on wireless sensor network technologies that monitor the microclimate inside a greenhouse and linear equations model for optimization plant production and material cost. Moreover, we also suggest a novel design of an intelligent greenhouse. We validate our algorithms with simulations on a benchmark based on experimental data made at lNRA of Montfavet in France. Finally, we calculate the statistical estimators RMSE, TSSE, MAPE, EF and R2. The results obtained are promising, which shows the efficiency of our proposed system.

  • In this study, greenhouse gas emission of magnesium industry was estimated and the reduction potential of the greenhouse gas emission was evaluated with reduction technologies. Default value of IPCC guideline was used to calculate the greenhouse gas emission and $SF_6$ alternatives were considered in reduction potential. Import of magnesium ingot was 22,806 ton in 2013, which will be expected to increase to 81,700 ton with 20% rate in 2020. Magnesium ingot was consumed to produce magnesium alloy in diecasting process. Recently, commercial production of crown magnesium and magensium plate began. Based on ingot consumption, $CO_2$ emission of domestic magnesium industry was estimated to 504,000 ton, which is about 0.79% of domestic industrial emissions. Reduction potential of diecasting process was estimated to 489,320 ton by changing SF6 to alternative gases such as HFC-134a, Novec-612. Emission factor of Tier 3 level should be developed to enhance the accuracy of greeenhouse gas emission of magnesium industry.
