  • This study seeks to determine if the efficiency of bank human resources, as played by human capital, impacts the performance and diversification of banks. This study uses secondary data from data obtained from 385 commercial banks in 33 countries in Asia during the 2010-2020 period with the diversification analysis method. We use the Z-score to measure the amount of standard deviation that must be from earnings (ROAA). We examined it using the Tobit regression technique. According to the regression estimation results, human capital has a significant role in the performance and effective diversification of Asian banks. The human capital efficiency coefficient (HCE) is significantly negative with the cost-to-income ratio (CTIR) and significantly positive with Profitability, Financial Stability, and cost efficiency score. The level of efficiency of human resources has an effective role in increasing human capital which has an impact on bank diversification and performance. The development of human resources in a human capital framework plays an important role in the diversification and improvement of bank performance. Human capital has a significant role in the performance and effective diversification of Asian banks. • We proposed a framework for computer-supported credit evaluation systems for the effective management of credit risks in Korean commercial banks. Especially for medium and small sized companies, credit evaluators used to depend much on past experience rather than formalized principles and rules. Therefore, we applied case-based reasoning. The credit grade of a company is roughly determined by searching for alreadygraded similar companies in terms of usually accepted evaluation items. And then the grade is refined and adjusted by considering additional information about exceptional facts or by reflecting other evaluation results from different methods or techniques. Booch's object-oriented analysis and design method, Visual Basic 5.0 and MS Access 97 are used for the development of this prototype system.

  • This paper draws implications on the ship finance of the Korean ECAs for shipbuilding industry from the perspective of WTO ASCM through studying the trade disputes on export credits. In consideration of the underwriting practice on the case-by-case basis, the ECAs' law regimes and their ship finance programs as such would be judged not conferring a benefit. The ship finance of international commercial banks could be treated as a market benchmark for the purpose of determining the existence of benefit in the ECA ship finance. The ECAs share securities with international commercial banks for the same exposure to the risks in a syndicate. Therefore, WTO DSB would rule that the ECA ship finance confers no benefit for individual transactions. The items (j) and (k-1) of ASCM Annex I are not allowed to interpret a contrario.

  • Recently financial institutions in Korea are experiencing an unfamiliar challenge in terms of their operational risk management due to the volatility of global financial market and the incessant development of new financial products. In this paper, we present an AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) model to evaluate the effectiveness of commercial softwares for risk management in banking. The AHP model considers software's performance. utility, serviceability and durability as major evaluation criteria. The weight of each criterion is generated by the questionnaire survey given to practitioners in risk management in domestic commercial banks.

  • This study examines how the health of the banks in ASEAN-3 countries namely Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand respond to the change in exchange rates and foreign interest rates in four large economies. The transmissions of the two external factors through domestic factors in each ASEAN-3 countries eventually affects Non-Performing Loan (NPL) of commercial banks. This study uses the monthly time series data and the renowned Structural Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model comprising five variables, namely exchange rate, foreign interest rate, domestic interest rate, money supply, and non-performing loan (NPL). The results indicate that there are different effects between ASEAN-3 countries, which can be classified as short-run effect and long-run effect. In the long run effect, external factors have a dominant role in determining NPL in ASEAN-3 countries. Yuan has the biggest effect on Malaysia's NPL, while Indonesia is more affected by European interest rates rather than the fluctuation of the US currency and China's interest rates. Among ASEAN-3 countries, Malaysia is the one that is the most vulnerable to external factors. While Thailand's NPL is affected dominantly by domestic factors. This study shows that the Fed Funds Rate (US official interest rate) is not always the dominant factor affecting the health of domestic banks in ASEAN-3.

  • With the help of this study, we aim to investigate the influence of Financial Distress (FD) and information and communication technology (ICT) on the operating performance and efficiency of banks in the Indian banking sector. FD can be defined as a position in which a company or individual is not in a condition to fulfill their promise of paying their obligations on time. The term "financial distress" refers to a situation in which a corporation or individual is unable to keep their promise of paying their debts on time. In this work, panel data analysis (PDA) was used to analyze data from 33 Indian banks over ten years (2010 to 2019). According to the findings, FD has a positive and significant impact on bank operational performance and efficiency. The current study will give the banking industry a better understanding of how a bank's performance can be negatively impacted by distressing conditions that render it inefficient and ineffective. Second, it will show investors how the level of distress can have a significant impact on bank performance in the market, finally resulting in the loss of money invested.
