  • In recent years, the study about the high efficiency and low fuel consumption of the internal conbustion engine has been mainly proceeding. To achieve these goals, the improvement of combustion process in Sl engine and the use of substitute energy are suggested. When the methanol blend fuel Is used, the combustion rate of the initial ignition is diminishing by high latent evaporation of methanol. But it attracts the attention because of the high octane number, and lean mixture peculiarity. Considering these facts, the gasoline-methanol blend fuel In engine operation has been used to compare and analyze the pressure development, rate of heat release, mass burned fraction, and combustion process. The results of experiment show the power increase, lean combustion and low harmful component of emission.

  • Flameless combustion, well known as MILD (Moderate Intensity Low oxygen Dilution) combustion or CDC(Colorless Distributed Combustion), is considered as one of the promising technology for achieving low NOx and CO emissions with improving thermal efficiency of combustion system. In this paper, the effects of exhaust gas dilution rate on formation of flameless combustion of liquid fuel were analyzed using three-dimensional numerical simulations for application of gas turbine combustor with high power density. Results show that the local high temperature region was decreased and flame temperature was spatially uniformly distributed due to higher dilution rate of burnt gas as similar pattern of gas phase flameless combustion. But the evaporation and mixing process of liquid fuel are found to be another important factors for formation of flameless combustion.

  • Swirl injection induces not only the increase in fuel regression rate but also the reduction of combustion pressure oscillation. This acts, in turn, to stabilize combustion process. Thus, this study primarily focuses on the change in flow structure in the main chamber by swirl injection. Then examining the change in flow structure was done to understand the physical process for stabilizing combustion. In the results, the application of swirl injection could suppress the generation of p' and q' in 500Hz band and could shift the phase difference and cross correlation. Further investigations with combustion visualization also show that the development of helical motion near surface region affects the small-sized vortex generation and shedding yielding combustion stabilization eventually.

  • It has been generally accepted that NOx formation increases as the maximum temperature or correspondingly the maximum pressure of a combustion system increases. Recently some exceptional experimental results have been reportes that under certain circumstance NOx formation could be reduced while the maximum pressure was increasing by varying the methods of combustion for the same kind of premixed gases. Until now that kind of results have been acquired only for the case of a dual opposed prechamber. But the mechanism has not been clearly understood yet. 3D computer simulation has been tried to clarify the mechanism. Flor this purpose KIVA-Ⅱ has been modified and applied to the model combustion chamber with which the same kind of experimental works have been done by the authors. A good agreement with the experimental results was achieved with the spatial and temporal resolution which is hard th be obtained by the experimental methods. And it was observed that for the dual opposed prechamber case the time for the NOx formation, which is non-equilibrium reaction, is shorter than any other case by an appropriate mixing process in the main combustion chamber. The shorter time reduceed heat loss through the combustion chamber walls and thereby obtaines the higher maximum pressure.

  • The performance of a direct-injection diesel engine often depends on the strength of swirl or squish, the shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is natural because the combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. Since the available duration to make the mixture formation of air-fuel is very short, it is difficult to make complete mixture. Therefore, an early stage of combustion is violent, which leads to the weakness of noise and vibration. In this paper, the combustion process of a common-rail diesel engine was studied by employing two kinds of pistons. One has several cavities on the piston crown to intensify the squish during the compression stroke in order to improve the atomization of fuel, we call this multi cavity piston in this paper. The other is a toroidal single cavity piston, generally used in high speed diesel engines. To take photographs of flame and flaming duration, a four-stroke diesel engine was remodeled into a two-stroke visible single cylinder engine and a high speed video camera was used.

  • Coal-water slurry is considered to have the potential for displacing petroleum used in the existing oil-fired industrial and utility boilers. The combustion of coal-water slurry(CWS) is a complex process and little is known about the detailed mechanism. In this paper the combustion behavior of a single suspended droplet of CWS in hot gas stream was investigated. The effect of coal particle size, water content in droplet, initial droplet size, ambient temperature and oxygen fraction in ambient gas were studied. The results are as follows; (1) Increasing the oxygen fraction in ambient gas considerably reduced the char combustion time. (2) The variation of water content and coal particle size in droplet showed little effect on the combustion behavior. (3) In the relatively high temperature ambient gas, the water evaporation time became shorter and the combustion process was stable.

  • A multidimensional simulation of turbulent flow and combustion with swirl in the cylinder of SI engine is implemented to clarify the effects of swirl. present simulation employs the ICED-ALE numerical technique, the skew-upwind difference scheme, a modified k_.epsilon. turbulence model, a combustion model of Arrhenius type and turbulence-mixing-control type. First, the calculations for swirling flow in an axisymmetric cylinder are carried out. The results are compared with the experimental data to validate the numerical analysis. Second, the calculations for intake, compression and combustion processes in an axisymmetric cylinder are performed. The effects of swirl on turbulent flow and combustion are examined through the parametric study of swirl number 0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4. As a result, it is numerically shown that the turbulent kinetic energy and the swirl velocity, which are produced during the intake process, affect the combustion process.

  • This paper investigates LES of turbulent combustion flow based on 2-scalar flamelet approach, where a G-equation and a conserved scalar equation simulate a propagation of premixed flame and a diffusion combustion process, respectively. The turbulent SGS modeling on these flamelet combustion approach is also researched. These LES models are applied to an industrial flows in a full scale gasturbine combustor with premixed and non-premixed flames. The numerical results predict the characteristics of experiment temperature profiles. Unsteady features of complex flames in combustor are also visualized.

  • To predict combustion instability in actual full-scale combustion chamber of rocket engines, air-injection test is proposed with scaling techniques. From the data, damping factors have been obtained as a function of hydraulic parameter and the data give us instability map. Two instability regions are presented and it is found that they coincide reasonably with them from hot-fire test with full-scale flow rates. Accordingly, the proposed approach can be applied cost-effectively to stability rating of jet injectors when mixing of fuel and oxidizer jets is the dominant process in instability triggering.
