Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.

This study realizes the conceptual method to predict combustion instability in actual full-scale combustion chamber of rocket engines by experimental tests with model (sub-scale) chamber. The model chamber was designed based on the methodologies proposed in the previous work regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions, and hot-fire test procedures were followed to obtain stability boundaries. From the experimental tests, two instability regions are presented by the parameters of combustion-chamber pressure and mixture (oxidizer/fuel) ratio, which are customary for combustor designers. It is found that instability characteristics in the chamber with the adopted jet injectors can be explained by the correlation between the characteristic burning or mixing time and the characteristic acoustic time: In each instability region, dynamic behaviors of flames are investigated to verify the hydrodynamically-derived characteristic lengths of the jet injectors. Large-amplitude pressure oscillation observed in upper instability region is found to be generated by lifted-off flames.

Combustion instability analysis of partially premixed model gas turbine combustor was conducted with 1D lumped method. Flame Transfer Function(FTF) was obtained with variation of fuel composition by Photo Multiplier Tube(PMT) and Hot Wire Anemometry(HWA). Decreasing instability frequency was observed when combustor length increased and multi-mode instability was confirmed. Instability frequency mode was changed while $H_2$ composition rate was increased and had agreement with experimental value. This work confirms that prediction of longitudinal combustion instability mode of partially premixed combustor is possible using 1D lumped method.
This study is to investigate the combustion instability of the variation of combustion chamber length in dual swirl gas turbine model combustor. When equivalence ratio was fixed at 1.1, as the length of the combustion chamber increases the value of the frequency decreased in 7kW while the value of the frequency was constant in 4kW. The analysis of flame behaviors by high speed camera was conducted to identify such trend.

Ramjet engine is weak for low frequency combustion instability because of their long air flow passage. A model combustor which has fuel injector and V-gutter shaped flame holder was designed and fabricated in order to simulate a combustion mechanism of ramjet engine, and it could demonstrate combustion instability which might occur in ramjet combustor. The frequency of the instability was very similar to that of acoustic resonance frequency of combustor, and it proved that a typical combustion instability by thermo-acoustic coupling occurred.

A combustion instability has been one of the most serious problems in the development of combustion devices including rocket engine and gas turbine. In particular, a high-frequency combustion instability generated by resonant coupling between combustion phenomena and acoustic oscillations within thrust chamber causes severe damage to the hardware. Because it is accompanied by high amplitude pressure oscillations and excessive heat flux to the chamber wall. Therefore, combustion instability is one of the difficult problems that must be resolved in developing liquid rocket engine. This paper describes the cases of combustion instability encounted during the development of thrust chamber for KSR-III and KSLV-II.
Most of all combustion system has combustion instability. It is a serious problem in combustion system. Unstable injection is one of the source of combustion instability. The experimental investigation of spray characteristics for simplex swirl injector were conducted experimentally. Two kerosene based fuels were chosen as the atomizing fluid. As the major operating parameters, fuel temperature and injection pressure were chosen, and varied in the range from 253 K to 293 K and from 0.2 MPa to 1.0 MPa, respectively. Direct spray images and mean diameter were measured for the various combination of operating parameters in the flow field. The results of present study show that the injection pressure and spray cone angle are fluctuated at specific conditions while it is continuous steady injection. As the fuel temperature changes continuously, spray cone angle varies discontinuously through the region of injection instability.

In this study, 1D and 3D thermoacoustic analysis model were developed in order to predict fundamental characteristics of combustion instability in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor. The 1D network model can be used to analyze frequency and growth rate of combustor instability by simply dividing whole system into a couple of acoustic sub-elements, while the 3D Helmholtz solver model can predict directly acoustic modes as well as basic properties of combustion instability. Prediction results of both 1D and 3D models generally showed a good agreement with the measurements, even if there was a slight overestimation for instability range.

The review of the liquid propellant rocket engine is presented. The combustion instabilities which were discovered on solid and liquid propellant rocket engines in 1930, have occurred on propulsion devices, such as gas turbine, ramjet, scramjet and rocket, and thus a study on the combustion instability became necessary. However, this problem has not been solved yet. Therefore, we investigated causes and mechanisms of the combustion instability and surveyed the efforts of solving combustion instability in various countries for developing stable liquid propellant rocket engines.
This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.
