Currently, there is a lack of research in the design approach to avoid column wall failure in the concrete filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) column-beam connections. In this paper, a finite element model has been developed and verified by available experimental data to analyze the failure mechanism of CFDST column-beam connections. Various finite element models with different column hollow ratios (χ) were established. The simulation result revealed that with increasing χ the failure mode gradually changed from yielding of end plate, to local failure of the column wall. Detailed parametric analyses were performed to study the failure mechanism of column wall for the CFDST column-beam connection, in which the strength of sandwiched concrete and steel tube and thickness of steel tube were incorporated. An analytical model was proposed to predict the moment resistance of the assembled connection considering the failure of column wall. The simulation results indicate that the proposed analytical model can provided a conservative prediction of the moment resistance. Finally, an upper bound value of χ was recommend to avoid column wall failure for CFDST column-beam connections.

This study presents the stress evaluation equations of circular column-box beam connection in steel frame piers. FEM analysis were carried out for circular column-box beam connection. Analysis models were made for design parameters such as joint angle, span length-width ratio(L/B), sectional-area ratio(S=A/sub w/A/sub f/), and circular column-box beam stiffness ratio(Ic/Ib). Analysis results were compared to the existing equation. Based on analysis results the stress evaluation equations of circular column-box beam connection are proposed by regression analysis.
This study has been motivated to evaluate the practicality of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring for damage detection in steel column connection. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, the theory of electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance responses and impedance-based damage monitoring method are outlined. Secondly, the feasibility of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring is verified for several pre-published experimental examples on steel beams, cracked aluminum beams, and aluminum round plates. Undamaged and damaged steel and aluminum beams are simulated to compare to experimental impedance responses. An aluminum round plate with PZT patch in center is simulated to investigate sensitive range of impedance responses. Finally, numerical simulation of the impedance-based damage monitoring is performed for a steel column connection in which connection bolts are damaged. From the numerical simulation test, the applicability of the impedance-based monitoring to the target steel column connection can be evaluated.
When reinforced concrete structures are subjected to strong seismic forces, their beam-column connections are very susceptible to be damaged during the earthquake event. Consequently, structural designers try to fit an important quantity of steel reinforcement inside the connection, complicating its construction without a clear justification for this. The aim of this work is to evaluate -and demonstrate- numerically how the quantity and the array of the internal steel reinforcement influences on the nonlinear response of the RC beam-column connection. For this, two specimens (extracted from an experimental test of 12 RC beam-column connections reported in literature) were modeled in the Finite Element code FEAP considering different stirrup's arrays. The nonlinear response of the RC beam-column connection is evaluated taking into account the nonlinear thermodynamic behavior of each component: a damage model is used for concrete; a classical plasticity model is adopted for steel reinforcement; the steel-concrete bonding is considered perfect without degradation. At the end, the experimental responses obtained in the tests are compared to the numerical results, as well as the distribution of shear stresses and damage inside the concrete core of the beam-column connection, which are analyzed for a low and high state of confinement.
Box sections are symmetrical sections and they have high moment of inertia in both directions, therefore they are good members in tall building structures. For the rigid connection in structures with box column continuity plates are used on level of beam flanges in column. Assembly of the continuity plates is a difficult and unreliable work due to lack of weld or high welding and cutting in the fourth side of column in panel zone, so the use of experimental stiffeners have been considered by researchers. This paper presented an experimental investigation on connection in box columns. The proposed connection has been investigated in four cases which contain connection without internal and external stiffeners(C-0-00), connection with continuity plates(C-I-CP), connection with external vase shape stiffener (C-E-VP) and connection with surrounding plates(C-E-SP). The results show that the connections with vase plates and surrounding plates can respectively increase the ultimate strength of the connection up to 366% and 518% than the connection without stiffeners, in case connection with the continuity plates this parameter increases about 39%. In addition, the proposed C-E-VP and C-E-SP connection provide a rigid and safe connection to acquire rigidity of 95% and 98% respectively. But C-I-CP connection is classified as semi-rigid connections.
The study is an experimental test on full-scale flat plate slab-column interior connection. The punching shear on the flat plate slab-column connection can bring about the reason of the brittle punching shear failure which may result of collapsing the whole structure. From the development of residential flat plate system, the shear reinforcement is developed for preventing the punching shear. For making sure of the punching shear capacity, developed for shear reinforcement in slab-column connection, the structural test is performed. The dimension of the slabs was 2620*2725*180mm with square column (600*800mm). The slabs were tested up to failure monotonic vertical shear forces. The presences of S/S bar and wire mesh substantially increased the punching shear capacity and the ductility of the slab-column connections.

In this paper, deformation capacity of steel moment connections with RHS column was investigated. Initially, non-linear finite element analysis of five bate steel beam models was conducted. The models were designed to have different detail at their beam-to-column connection, so that the flexural moment capacity was different respectively. Analysis results showed 4hat the moment transfer efficiency of the analytical model with RHS-column was poor when comparing to model with WF(Wide flnage)-column due to out-of-plane deformation of the RHS-column flange. The presence of scallop and thin plate of RHS column was also a reason of the decrease of moment transfer efficiency, which would result in a potential fracture of tile steel beam-to-column connections. Further test on beam-to-column connections with RHS column revealed that the moment transfer efficiency of a beam web decreased due to the out-of-plane deformation of column flange, which led to premature failure of the connection.

There are many Beam-Column connections in general structures and ship structures. For simplicity and convenience of analysis, the connections are mostly considered hinged when not reinforced or rigidly fixed when reinforced. This paper has intended to analyze the Beam-Column connection which is assumed two dimensional flat plate. The analysis has been preformed by Finite Element Method following the change of moment of inertia at connection. The conclusion of this investigation is as follows: By reinforcing or increasing the moment of inertia at connection part, the stress distribution of whole structure and the stress concentration at that part are relieved. Displacements of beam(when column is fixed) are almost linearly decreasing by the change of moment of inertia at connection.
This paper describes a new type of replaceable fuse for moment resisting frames. Column-tree connections with beam splice connections are frequently preferred in the moment resisting frames since they eliminate field welding and provide good quality. In the column-tree connections, a part of the beam is welded to the column in the shop and the rest of the beam is bolted with the splice connection in the field. In this study, a replaceable reduced beam section (R-RBS) connection is proposed in order to eliminate welding process and facilitate assembly at the site. In the proposed R-RBS connection, one end is connected by a beam splice connection to the beam and the other end is connected by a bolted end-plate connection to the column. More importantly is that the proposed R-RBS connection allows the replacement of the damaged R-RBS easily right after an earthquake. Pursuant to this goal, experimental and numerical studies have been undertaken to investigate the performance of the R-RBS connection. An experimental study on the RBS connection was used to substantiate the numerical model using ABAQUS, a commercially available finite element software. Additionally, five different finite element models were developed to conduct a parametric study. The results of the analysis were compared in terms of the moment and energy absorption capacities, PEEQ, rupture and tri-axiality indexes. The design process as well as the optimum dimensions of the R-RBS connections are presented. It was also demonstrated that the proposed R-RBS connection satisfies AISC criteria based on the nonlinear finite element analysis results.
This study suggested an integrated classification method for generalized characteristics of PC beam-column connection according to connection details. Quantifying the failure mode of PC-beam column connection and characteristics of corresponding details, this study suggested to use deformation contribution of each element of beam-column assemblage. According to the expected failure mode of beam-column connection assemblage, PC beam-column connection can be classified into 'equivalent monolithic system' and 'jointed system'. In this study, four test specimens were tested for verification of detailed classification method of PC beam-column connections. Test was carried out with typical beam-column connection test method. Load was applied at the top of test specimen and end of beams were restrained by hinge. In order to verify the deformation contribution of each test specimen, 34-LVDTs were mounted on test specimen. According to test results, deformation contribution of each test specimen have different characteristics. Deformation characteristics of joint and other components which are quantified by test results, equivalent monolithic system can be classified into two categories. Strong connection have extremely small deformation contribution of joint and much larger deformation contribution was shown in flexural behavior of beam. The other type of beam-column connection is ductile connection which allows the larger deformation in joint area compared with strong connection.
