  • Using the Keck 10 m telescope data with the HIRES spectrograph, we analyzed the evolution of Lyman$\alpha$ forest clouds at z > 2 down to the HI column density $10^{12.8}cm^{-2}$. The number density per unit column density does not change with redshifts at lower HI cloumn density ($N_{HI} < 10^{14}cm^{-2}$), while the forest clouds at higher column density disappear rapidly. The cutoff b value, the thermal temperature indicator, increases as redshift decreases. The correlation strength seems to be stronger as redshift decreases.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of immersed columns with soft base. The support condition of the column is represented by using a translational spring and a rotational spring. The eccentricity and rotatory inertia of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into account. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, the density of immersed part was modified to account for the added fluid mass. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of non-dimensional system parameters: the mass density ratio of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, the eccentricity, the translation spring parameter, and the rotational spring parameter.

  • We have compared the column densities of $H_2CO$, $^{13}CO$, $C^{18}O$, $^{12}CO$, CS, and $HCO^+$ to the visual extinctions derived from star counts in eight dark clouds, L1317, B1, L1551, L1535, L1544, L134, L134N, and B335. We examined the degree of correlation between molecules and extinctions. The contours of $^{13}CO$, $H_2CO$, and CS distributions show an excellent coincidence with those of the visual extinction. Even though the plots of molecule brightness temperature or column density as a function of the visual extinction show a considerable scatter, a good correlation is found between the two quantities. The turnover of the ratios of $^{13}CO$ and $H_2CO$ column densities to the visual extinction at high extinctions observed in several clouds is not apparent in this work. The ratios seem to maintain constant values within the range of $A_V$ we studied. The slopes of the relations between the molecule column density and extinction, and the threshold values of extinction for detection of molecules are comparable to the other works. The cause of the slope difference is discussed. We derived, for the first time, the relations of CS and $HCO^+$ column densities and the visual extinction. The ratio of CS column density to extinction is at least two orders of magnitude lower than the mean value for $^{13}CO$, but the threshold for detection of CS is comparable to that of $^{13}CO$. The ratio of the $HCO^+$ column density to extinction is one to two orders of magnitude lower than the mean ratio for $H_2CO$.

  • Synchrotron emission at 408 MHz and HI column density have been used to find an evidence for the relationship between the Galactic magnetic field and the gas density. The observational data of the brightness temperature and HI column density, $T_b(408)\;and \;N_{HI}$, near the galactic plane between galactic longitudes $l=62^{circ}\;and\;l=250^{\circ}$ show a clear linear correlation of $T_b(408)=A(l,b)+B\;N_{HI}$, where A(l, b)is a background and forground radiation at the galactic coordinate. We found $(1.4{pm}0.3)10^{-21}$ for the slope B, which describes the strength of the syncrotron radiation from the HI cloud, and agrees with the value for the MIlky Way obtained by Beuermann et al. (1985). We conclude therefore that a well defined nonthermal corelates with the HI column density originating from this HI cloud.

  • The density profile measurement technology by gamma transmission has been widely used to diagnose processes in the field of refinery and petrochemical industry. This technology can reveal a clue and position of abnormal phenomenon of industrial processes during their operation. In this paper, the feasibility of the gamma transmission technology for detecting changes in the amount of fluid in a distillation column was evaluated by using Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations assumed that $^{60}Co$ (1.17, 1.33 MeV) sources and NaI (Tl) detectors (${\Phi}5{\times}5cm$) are located in opposite sides of a column and it concurrently moves in vertical direction. To determine the dependency of a spatial resolution on aperture size of a collimator, the simulation model for a tray in a column were simulated with the aperture sizes of 1 and 2 cm. The thickness of the high density area including a tray and fluid was 7.6 cm in the simulation. The spatial resolution of the tray was 8.2 and 8.5 cm, respectively. As a result, it was revealed that the conventional density profile measurement technique is not able to show the deviation of liquid level on a tray in a column.

  • We have reviewed three different techniques to estimate molecular cloud mass, and discussed the uncertainties involved. We found that determination of the most important parameter, the $^{13}CO$ abundance, is not very sensitive to the real LTE conditions, and that any possible error in deriving LTE column density may not introduce an error in the total gas column density, as far as the visual extinction is established for the object cloud. The virial technique always endows the largest mass estimate as there are several uncertainties, even if the cloud is in virial equilibrium. The strong indicator of the cloud perturbation is the centroid velocity dispersion. The mass using CO luminosity is based on the empirical law, but weakly dependent on the virial assumption, thus it still gives a larger mass estimate. The mass discrepancy is likely to be inevitable, and a factor of two or three difference between mass estimates could easily be attributed to the uncertainties mentioned above. The LTE mass estimate may be the most reliable one if we use the relation visual extinction and $^{13}CO$ column density of the object cloud, and the intercept is included.

  • In this paper the wave run-up around a circular column in regular waves is numerically calculated to investigate the applicability of the Modified Marker-Density (MMD) method to prediction of wave run-up around an offshore platform. The MMD method is one of the methods to define the highly nonlinear free surface. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation which are computed in Cartesian grid system. To validate incident waves generated by numerical simulation, those are compared with the solutions of the Stokes $5^{th}$ order wave theory. The wave run-up simulations are performed varying the steepness and period of incident waves as referred experimental data. The numerical results are compared to the experimental data and the results show good agreements.

  • Radiative transfer models in a spherical, turbulent interstellar medium (ISM), in which the photon source is situated at the center, are calculated to investigate the correlation between the scattered light and the dust column density. The medium is modeled using fractional Brownian motion structures that are appropriate for turbulent ISM. The correlation plot between the scattered light and optical depth shows substantial scatter and deviation from simple proportionality. It was also found that the overall density contrast is smoothed out in scattered light. In other words, there is an enhancement of the dust-scattered flux in low-density regions, while the scattered flux is suppressed in high-density regions. The correlation becomes less significant as the scattering becomes closer to being isotropic and the medium becomes more turbulent. Therefore, the scattered light observed in near-infrared wavelengths would show much weaker correlation than the observations in optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. We also find that the correlation plot between scattered lights at two different wavelengths shows a tighter correlation than that of the scattered light versus the optical depth.

  • In this work, perfusive particles are used to form a micro column in a microfluidic chip and flow properties of the micro column are investigated. The packing flow velocity and the column/particle size ratio are shown to be important parameters affecting the packing density of the micro column. Experimental results show that the effect of the column/particle size ratio on the flow resistance of the micro column is negligible. This contrasts with previous works on the effect of the column/particle size ratio on the total pressure drop across the column.

  • In situ experimental studies were Performed at Yongjong Island Geotechnical Experimental Site to evaluate the ground densification on sand deposited. Standard penetration test, cone penetration test, and SASW test were performed and soil profiles and quality of ground improvements were evaluated. The feasibility of applying SASW method were verified by comparing test results. The evaluation technique of in-situ density using SASW and resonant column tests was proposed, and the reliability of proposed method was verified by performing case studies.
