Exploiting Color Segmentation in Pedestrian Upper-body Detection (보행자 상반신 검출에서의 컬러 세그먼테이션 활용)

  • The paper proposes a new method of segmentation-based feature extraction to improve performance in pedestrian upper-body detection. General pedestrian detectors that use local features are often plagued by false positives due to the locality. Color information of multi parts of the upper body is utilized in figure-ground segmentation scheme to extract an salient, "global" shape feature capable of reducing the false positives. The performance of the multi-part color segmentation-based feature is evaluated by changing color spaces and the parameters of color histogram. The experimental result from an upper-body dataset shows that the proposed feature is effective in reducing the false positives of local feature-based detectors.

  • Recently, the concern of aging society is 'Healthy life' for the elderly and pre-elderly. Especially, realizing the 'Healthy life', it is very important for the elderly to establish living environment for holding and maintaining mental depression. Mental depression is related to dysfunction of sensory organ included physical functions. Therefore, the dysfunction of elderly's sensory organ is required to the guideline of environmental planning. In this study, among five senses, I focused visual sense due to the large proportion of environmental perception. The purpose of this study is to analyze the degree of geriatric depression and preference of simulated images applying preferable color for the elderly. This study conducted literature review and questionnaire survey. Firstly, the previous studies related with the melancholy, sense of isolation, self-regard for the elderly analyzed. Secondly, the questionnaire tool measuring the degree of geriatric depression developed. Thirdly, the tool investigating the preference for the simulated images applied main, sub, and accent colors produced. Applied preferable colors were used from the results previous study. Lastly, based on the result, the basic data of color planning were suggested. It was judged that this study is an useful as the basic guideline of color planning for the elderly's residential spaces and the potential value of considering geriatric depression and the color planning in terms of the elderly's visual sense.

Nurses' Evaluation of Characteristics of Interior Space in Outpatient Department of General Hospital (종합병원 외래 진료부의 실내공간특성에 대한 간호사 평가)

  • This study attempts to evaluate the interior space of outpatient department of general hospital in aspects of nurses. The subjects are 97 nurses who work in outpatient department of H general hospital, Busan. Evaluating items are ones related to space layout, furniture, interior climate, color and finishes of outpatient department. Also, evaluating spaces are waiting area, doctor's room, treatment room, nurse station, and resting and dressing area for nurses in outpatient department. The results are ; 1) The space layout type of outpatient area in general hospital which each department consists of waiting area, doctors offices, treatment room and etc. was evaluated positively by nurses. 2) The waiting area and doctor's room was evaluated relatively positive, the treatment room was more negatively than these two rooms. But nurse related spaces such as nurse station and resting and dressing room were evaluated relatively negative. 3) In aspects of interior elements, furniture, and color and finishes were rated to be relatively positive. However, air conditions were rated negatively. 4) The finishes and dressing area in treatment room were rated relatively low. This would be a basic data for planning the outpatient area of general hospital.

A Comparison Study on Color Planing and Application in interior space of subway station (지하철 정거장 내부공간의 색채계획과 적용에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The subway lines have been expanded to solve the traffic problems in Korean cities, so that a big number of people daily use the subway stations. Therefore, subway stations became a kind of public space as well as traffic space. However, the underground space of the stations are essentially different with the aboveground space in terms of environmental and psychological terms. The color planning can be used to reduce the environmental and psychological disadvantages of underground spaces of subway stations. The purpose of this study is to understand the current design methods of subway stations' color planning. To achieve this purpose, this study investigates all reports of 'Color Planning for the Subway' which were used for the construction of subway lines in 6(six) Korean cities. After analyzing the design theories and methods used for the color planning, field studies have been done upon 10 subway lines of 6 cities, to find out the limitations of color planning, the differences between color planning and actual results. The conclusions are as follows : First, the color planning for subway stations does not seem to consider the characteristics of underground space and its psychological effects, such as the depth of station, the lighting source and methods. Second, some critical differences have been found between the color planning and the actual application during construction, due to arbitrary interpretation and limitations of color expression of the construction materials. Third, and therefore, the colors applied in stations do not perform their planned role such as 'variety in the unity', 'symbolic expression of the city and station'.

Fire Detection Using Multi-Channel Information and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix Image Features

  • Recently, there has been an increase in the number of hazardous events, such as fire accidents. Monitoring systems that rely on human resources depend on people; hence, the performance of the system can be degraded when human operators are fatigued or tensed. It is easy to use fire alarm boxes; however, these are frequently activated by external factors such as temperature and humidity. We propose an approach to fire detection using an image processing technique. In this paper, we propose a fire detection method using multichannel information and gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) image features. Multi-channels consist of RGB, YCbCr, and HSV color spaces. The flame color and smoke texture information are used to detect the flames and smoke, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than the previous method in terms of accuracy of fire detection.

  • A process of choosing a subset of original features, so called feature selection, is considered as a crucial preprocessing step to image processing applications. There are already large pools of techniques developed for machine learning and data mining fields. In this paper, basically two methods, non-feature selection and feature selection, are investigated to compare their predictive effectiveness of classification. Color co-occurrence feature is used for defining image features. Standard Sequential Forward Selection algorithm are used for feature selection to identify relevant features and redundancy among relevant features. Four color spaces, RGB, YCbCr, HSV, and Gaussian space are considered for computing color co-occurrence features. Gray-level image feature is also considered for the performance comparison reasons. The experimental results are presented.

  • We propose a new method evaluating the image quality of display devices using the CIECAM02 that is the recently developed CIE color appearance model and provides an extension of the previously recommended CIE color spaces. We develop the evaluation method that quantifies the color reproduction capability, emotional gray scale (gradation), and visual perception contrast (perceptual contrast range) based on the gamut in this model.

A Study on the Sense of Continuity between Two Rooms by Adjusting the Illuminance and The Color Temperature of Lighting (조명의 조도 및 색온도 제어에 의한 실내 두 공간의 공간감 변화)

  • This paper describes the experiments to examine the sense of continuity produced by lighting between physically separated spaces. Tolerable limits of illuminance were measured for providing a sense of continuity between two rooms connected by a window. In the experiments the illuminance and color of lighting of the subjects room were changed while those of the other room were kept constant. The results show that the observers could certainly determine the range of optimum illuminance for them to recognize continuity, and the variance of the results between observers is very small. Moreover, the tolerable range of illuminance was almost constant as far as the color difference was less than some critical value. This finding would be helpful in designing a lighting system for providing a sense of continuity.

A study on color planning appropriate for residential space (주거공간의 색채 계획에 대한 공간별 비교분석에 관한 연구)

  • The demand for residential space is encompassing diverse ranges to keep pace with the times. Due to the Increase in wealth, people today want more functional and physical well being as well as giving more weight to the emotional aspect in spatial planning. This study paid special attention on the psychological effect of color--especially difference of warm/cold temperature--and the individual variation on favorable colors. 1. For a communal space (e.g. living rooms), subjects showed high preference of YR range of colors and warm colors. 2. For an individual space (e.g. bedrooms), subjects showed high preference of GY range of colors and neutral colors. 3. For a sanitary space (e.g. bathrooms), subjects showed high preference of PB and B ranges of colors, and cold colors. 4. For all of the above spaces, subjects showed high preference of warm colors.

Face Region Detection using a Color Union Model and The Levenberg-Marquadt Algorithm (색상 조합 모델과 LM(Levenberg-Marquadt)알고리즘을 이용한 얼굴 영역 검출)

  • This paper proposes an enhanced skin color-based detection method to find a region of human face in color images. The proposed detection method combines three color spaces, RGB, $YC_bC_r$, YIQ and builds color union histograms of luminance and chrominance components respectively. Combined color union histograms are then fed in to the back-propagation neural network for training and Levenberg-Marquadt algorithm is applied to the iteration process of training. Proposed method with Levenberg-Marquadt algorithm applied to training process of neural network contributes to solve a local minimum problem of back-propagation neural network, one of common methods of training for face detection, and lead to make lower a detection error rate. Further, proposed color-based detection method using combined color union histograms which give emphasis to chrominance components divided from luminance components inputs more confident values at the neural network and shows higher detection accuracy in comparison to the histogram of single color space. The experiments show that these approaches perform a good capability for face region detection, and these are robust to illumination conditions.
