Rape (Brassica napus L.) plants are one of the major oilseed crops. The main components of rapeseed are oil (35 to 47%) and protein (15 to 32%). For the biodiesel production, the development of a new variety of rape plant with high biomass and/or oleic acid contents is required. In order to determine the optimum dose of gamma-ray irradiation, the rape seeds of cvs. Hanra (Hr), Youngsan (Ys), Tammi (Tm), and Tamra (Tr) were irradiated with a 100~4,000 Gy dose range of gamma-rays. Considering the growth factors, the optimum doses were determined to be within the range of 600~1,000 Gy for the selection of useful mutant lines. Six-hundred and eighty-eight (688) $M_2$ mutant lines were obtained from 600~1,000 Gy gamma-ray-irradiated $M_1$ plants through selfing. The growth characteristics, leaf shape, early flowering, and flower color were all investigated. The selected mutant numbers of early flowering, leaf shape, and flower color were 34, 52, and 3 from the four cultivars, respectively. These mutant lines will be used for the development of a new variety of rape plant with high biomass and oleic acid contents.

Phenotypes of panicle, hull and seed of mutant rice (Oryza sativa L.) were characterized. Panicle mutants were classified in 4 groups with their internode length of main rachis, primary rachis, secondary rachis and pedicel. Hull and seed mutants were grouped into 12 based on their mutant characters in shape, size and color of seeds. These natural and spontaneous mutant collections showed distinct phenotypes to wild type rice. This might be useful for the identification of the functions of genetic factors in the Mendelian inheritance.

A putative type-I chalcone isomerase (CHI) cDNA clone EuNOD-CHI was previously isolated from the root nodule of Elaeagnus umbellata [Kim et al. (2003)]. To see if it encodes a functional CHI, we ectopically overexpressed it in the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) transparent testa 5 (tt5) mutant, which is defective in naringenin production and has yellow seeds due to proanthocyanidin deficiency. Ectopic overexpression of EuNOD-CHI resulted in recovery of normal seed coat color. Naringenin produced by CHI from naringenin chalcone was detected in the transgenic lines like in the wild-type, whereas it was absent from the tt5 mutant. We conclude that EuNOD-CHI encodes a functional type-I CHI. In situ hybridization revealed that EuNOD-CHI expression is localized to the infected cells of the fixation zone in root nodules.
A full-length cDNA and genomic DNA of a $leucoanthocyanidin$$dioxygenase$ ($DgLDOX$) gene was isolated from the petals of chrysanthemum 'Argus', and comparative features of the gene among three flower color mutants derived from a gamma-ray mutagenesis were characterized. The cDNA coding region of the gene was 1068 bp and was translated into 356 amino acids accordingly. The genomic DNA size was 1346 bp for 'Argus', while three mutants revealed ranges of 1363 to 1374 bp. A single intron between two coding exons for the $DgLDOX$ gene was found, of which size was 112 bp for 'Argus', but 128 or 137 bp for three flower color mutants, indicating that a genomic insertion in the intron occurred during the gamma-ray mutagenesis. DNA blot analysis revealed the $DgLDOX$ gene presenting as a single copy in the chrysanthemum genome. The $DgLDOX$ gene was expressed in both 'Argus' of light-pink color and two purple color mutants (AM1 and AM3) but had very weak expression in only white color mutant (AM2). The results demonstrated that variations in the flower color of the mutants might be associated with changes in the amino acid moieties in the coding exons or fragment insertions in the intron of the $DgLDOX$ gene, which potentially resulted in less expression of the gene in the white colored mutant.

Although innate color preference of motile organisms may provide clues to behavioral biases, it has remained a longstanding question. In this study, we investigated innate color preference of zebrafish larvae. A cross maze with different color sleeves around each arm was used for the color preference test (R; red, G; green, B; blue, Y; yellow). The findings showed that 5 dpf zebrafish larvae preferred blue over other colors (B > R > G > Y). To study innate color recognition further, tyrosinase mutants were generated using CRISPR/Cas9 system. As a model for oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and color vision impairment, tyrosinase mutants demonstrated diminished color sensation, indicated mainly by hypopigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Due to its relative simplicity and ease, color preference screening using zebrafish larvae is suitable for high-throughput screening applications. This system may potentially be applied to the analysis of drug effects on larval behavior or the detection of sensory deficits in neurological disorder models, such as autism-related disorders, using mutant larvae generated by the CRISPR/Cas9 technique.
Culm length of Dohoku mutant 1(DM 1) and mutant 2(DM 2) were shorter than Dohuko parent and Heukjinjubyo check, while days to heading were delayed seven to 20 days Panicle length of these were similar to check and number of panicle per plant of DM 2 was highly appeared than check. Spikelets per plant of the selected lines were lower than check, and glume color of these were varied from brown to dark purple and awn length was also varied according to line used. Anthocyanin content of each mutant line as measured by 530nm were lower than that of check in that OD 2.23 and OD 2.26 for DM 1 and DM 2, respectively, and 2.59 for check.

A new coreopsis cultivar, 'Uridream Pink', was developed by mutation breeding using gamma-ray irradiation. Rooted cuttings of 'Uridream 01', developed at Uriseed Company, were exposed to various gray ranges of gamma-rays from a $^{60}CO$ source for 24 h in 2009 at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Using gamma-rays with the range of 10-100 Gy, a chimeric mutant with pastel pink flowers was induced at 30 Gy from 'Uridream 01', which blooms red-purple flowers (Red-purple group, 59A). Clones that produced flowers with modified pink color were separated from the chimeric mutant and fixed by more than three rounds of cutting back from 2009 to 2010. The separated mutant clones with modified pink color were found to bloom flowers with marketable color and be free of any abnormal plant characteristics. The typical color of the flowers was pastel pink (Red-purple group, 67B), and the clones were registered as 'Uridream Pink' at the Korea Seed and Variety Service (plant variety protection number: 4410). Although the size of flowers and leaves of 'Uridream Pink' are smaller than those of 'Uridream 01', the number of flowers per plant is greater. 'Uridream Pink' can be used as both a pot and a garden plant because of its long blooming period from late spring to late autumn.
The white-colored and the dark gray-colored mutants were frequently happened in cultivated areas of Pleurotus ostreatus (Wonhyeong-neutari). These caused conflicts between farmers and spawn companies. Our studies were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of mutagenesis. The results from the studies would provide valuable informations that could be used to prevent the color-related mutation, and also will be applied in breeding programs of P. ostreatus. Oyster mushroom variety, Wonhyeong-neutari, is somatic hybrid of Pleurotus and has genetic makers for arginine, ornithine, proline, riboflavine. Genetic markers analysis of monospore isolates derived from color mutants show identical tendency with that of Wonhyeong-neutari, these results indicate that color mutants were derived from Wonhyeongneutari. Twenty-one and four homokaryons were selected from the white-colored mutant MGL 2205 and gray-colored ASI 2029. All 34 F1 hybrids derived from the white-colored mutant MGL 2205 produce white-color fruiting bodies, indicating that the white color trait is heritable. In the first generation hybrids between the white-colored MGL 2205 and the gray-colored ASI 2029, all 16 hybrids produced pigmented fruiting bodies. Homokaryons isolated from the hybrid MGL 2205 X ASI 2029 were mated with homokaryon tester strains derived from MGL 2205. By these result, we could assumed that white color trait is a heritable character which is controlled by more than one recessive gene.
The use of high amylose maize varieties significantly affected the alkaline-cooking process and characteristics of alkaline-processed food products, such as masa and tortilla chips. High amylose maize varieties had softer endosperm textures with move tightly attached pericarps than normal maize. Masa prepared from high amylose mutant maize was less cohesive than that of normal maize due to insufficient dispersion of amylopectin and excessive retrogradation of starches. Tortilla chips prepared from amylose-extender dull (ae du), amylomaize V, and Ⅶ had slightly increased oil absorption, while tortilla chips from dull (du) and amylose-extender sugary-2 (ae su-2) had oil contents similar to that of control chips. Increased oil absorption of the tortilla chips was due to their increased surface area. Tortilla chips produced from high amylose mutant maize had darker color than control chips, presumably due to the pigmented pericarp tissues, higher levels of reducing sugars, and phenolic compounds present in the kernel.
