  • This paper develops a comparatively time-efficient methodology for performing seismic fragility analysis of the reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in the presence of uncertainty sources. It aims to appraise the effectiveness of any variation in the material's mechanical properties as epistemic uncertainty, and the record-to-record variation as aleatory uncertainty in structural response. In this respect, the fuzzy set theory, a well-known 𝛼-cut approach, and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) assess the median of collapse fragility curves as a fuzzy response. GA is requisite for searching the maxima and minima of the objective function (median fragility herein) in each membership degree, 𝛼. As this is a complicated and time-consuming process, the authors propose utilizing the Gene Expression Programming-based (GEP-based) equation for reducing the computational analysis time of the case study building significantly. The results indicate that the proposed structural analysis algorithm on the derived GEP model is able to compute the fuzzy median fragility about 33.3% faster, with errors less than 1%.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mechanical stress and displacement on the jaws during the simulated bilateral clenching task on the three-dimensional finite element model of the dentated skull with unilateral molar loss. For this study, the computed tomography(G.E.8800 Quick, USA) was used to scan the total length of human skull in the frontal plane at 2.0mm intervals. The fully assembled finite element model consists of the articular disc, maxilla, mandible, teeth, periodontal ligament and cranium. The FE model was used to simulate the bilateral clenching in intercuspal position. The loading condition was the force of the masseter muscle exerted on the mandible as reported by Korioth et al. degrees of freedom of the zygomatic region where the masseter muscle is attached were fixed as restraints. In order to reflect the actual action of the muscles force, the displacement of the region was attached where the muscle is connected to the temporal bone and restraint conditions were given values identical to values at the attachment region of the masticatory muscle but with the opposite direction of the reaction from when the muscle force is acted on the mandible. Although the mandible generally has higher displacement and von Mises stress than the maxilla, its mandibular corpus on the molar-loss side has a higher stress and displacement than the molar-presence side. Because the displacement and von Mises Stress was the highest on the lateral surface of mandibular corpus with molar loss, the stress level of the condyle on the molar-loss side is greater than that of the molar-presence side, which in turn caused the symphysis of the mandible to bend. In conclusion, the unilateral posterior bite collapse with molar loss under para-functional activities such as bruxism and clenching can affect the stress concentration on the condyle and mandibular corpus. It is therefore necessary to consider the biomechanical function of dento-skeleton under masticatory force while designing the occlusal scheme of restoration on alveolar bone with the posterior collapse.

  • On August 4, 2020, 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a storage warehouse at the Port of Beirut exploded. This explosion is said to be the largest ammonium nitrate explosion ever. By applying the TNT equivalency method, TNT equivalent amount corresponding to the explosion energy of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate was calculated, and it is found to be 856 tons. Overpressure and impulse were calculated in a range up to 3600 m from the blast using the Kingery-Bulmash explosion parameter calculator tool. As the distance from the explosion center increases, the overpressure and impulse decrease exponentially, but the overpressure decreases more significantly, showing that overpressure is more affected by distance than the impact. As a result of applying the damage criteria to evaluate the effects of overpressure and impulse on the structure, the critical distances at which partial collapse, major damage, and minor damage to the structure occur are found to be approximately 500, 800, and 2200 m from the center of the explosion, respectively. The probit function was applied to evaluate the probability of damage to structures and human body. The points where the probability of collapse, major damage, minor damage, and breakage of window-panes to structures are greater than 50% are found to be approximately 500, 810, 2200, and 3200 m, respectively. For people within 200 m from the center of the explosion, the probability of death due to lung damage is more than 99%, and the 50% probability of eardrum rupture is approximately 300 m. The points with a 100% probability of death due to skull rupture and whole body impact due to whole body displacement are evaluated to be 300 and 100 m, respectively.

  • Wind and flood damage caused by typhoons causes a lot of damage to the Korean Peninsula every year. In order to minimize damage, a preliminary analysis of damage estimation and evacuation routes is required for rapid decision-making. This study attempted to develop an analysis module that can provide necessary information according to the disaster stage. For use in the preparation stage, A function to check past typhoon routes and past damage information similar to typhoon routes heading north, a function to extract isolated dangerous areas, and a function to extract reservoir collapse areas were developed. For use in the early stages of response and recovery, a function to extract the expected flooding range considering the current flooding depth, a function to analyze expected damage information on population, buildings, farmland, and a function to provide evacuation information were included. In addition, an automated web map creation method was proposed to express the analysis results. The analysis function was developed and modularized based on Python open source, and the web display function was implemented based on JavaScript. The tools developed in this study are expected to be efficiently used for rapid decision-making in the early stages of monitoring against storm and flood damage.

  • One of the important things in the full mouth reconstruction is the determination of therapeutic position. Centric jaw relation is used as a therapeutic position for the full mouth reconstruction. There are several techniques associated with recording this position. Five clinically acceptable techniques are as follows: 1) Swallowing or free closure, 2) Chin point guidance, 3) Bimanual method 4) Myo-monitor technique, 5) Anterior deprogrammer. Centric relation obtained utilizing the anterior acrylic resin platform in this case. Another important thing in full mouth reconstruction is provisional restoration. Provisional restorations are an excellent diagnostic instrument, especially in full remain esthetics, phonetics, function, parafunction, and dysfunction after evaluation and acceptance through clinical trial with the provisional restorations should be accurately transferred to the final restorations to ensure the same clinical success. Especially, anterior guidance should be accurately transferred to the final restorations. An accurate anterior guidance is critical for optimal esthetics, phonetics, comfort, function, stress minimization, and longevity of teeth and restorations. To record optimum anterior guidance, customized anterior guide table is used in this case. Considering previously mentioned points, we did successive treatment. And it resulted in a better situation esthetically and functionally. Followings are what we cared in treating a patient in this case. 1) Accurate centric relation recording 2) Accurate transference of anterior guidance to the final restorations.

  • Structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections have significant potential for application in offshore oil and gas production systems because of their property that combines insulation performance with structural strength in an integrated way. Such cross-sections comprise inner and outer thin walled pipes with the annulus between them fully filled by a selectable thick filler material to impart an appropriate combination of properties. Structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections can exhibit several different collapse mechanisms and the basis of the preferential occurrence of one over others is of interest. This paper presents an elastic analyses of a structural pipe-in-pipe cross-section when subjected to external hydrostatic pressure. It formulates and solves the static and elastic buckling problem using the variational principle of minimum potential energy. The paper also investigates a simplified formulation of the problem where the outer pipe and its contact with the filler material is considered as a 'pipe on an elastic foundation'. Results are presented to show the variation of elastic buckling pressure with the relative elastic modulus of the filler and pipe materials, the filler thickness and the thicknesses of the inner and outer pipes. The range of applicability of the simplified 'pipe on an elastic foundation' analysis is also presented. A brief review of the types of materials that could be used as the filler is combined with the results of the analysis to draw conclusions about elastic buckling behaviour of structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections.

  • This paper provides prediction of ultimate longitudinal strengths of hull girder of a VLCC considering probabilistic damage extents due to collision and grounding accidents based on IMO Guideline(2003). The probability density functions of damage extents are expressed as a function of nondimensional damage variables. The accumulated probability levels of 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% are taken into account for the damage extent estimation. The ultimate strengths have been calculated using in-house software UMADS (Ultimate Moment Analysis of Damaged Ships) which is based on the progressive collapse method. Damage indices are provided for all heeling angles due to any possible flooding of compartments from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ which represent from sagging to hogging conditions, respectively. The analysis results reveal that minimum damage indices show different values according to heeling angles and damage levels.

  • The goal of this paper is to investigate structural integrity factors of RMI(reflective metal insulation) to confirm the design requirements in nuclear power plant. Currently, a glass wool insulation is using now, but it will gradually be replaced with the reflective metal insulation maded by stainless steel plates. The main function of an insulation is to minimize a heat loss of vessel and pipes in RCS(reactor coolant system). It has to maintain structural a integrity in nuclear power plant life duration. In this study, the structural integrity analysis was carried out both multi-plate and outer shell plate by using a static analysis and experimental test. First, inner multi-plate has a self support structure for being air space. Because the effect of total static weight in multi-layer plate is low, a plate collapse possibility is not high. Considering optimum thin plate pressing process, it has to pre-check the basic physical properties. Second, the outer segment thickness and stiffener shape are verified by the numerical static analysis, and sample test for both type of panel and cylindrical pipe model.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid voltage controller based on a hierarchical control structure for implementation in the Jeju power system. The hybrid voltage controller utilizes the coordination of various reactive power devices such as generators, switched shunt devices and LTC to regulate the pilot voltage of an area or zone. The reactive power source can be classified into two groups based on action characteristics, namely continuous and discrete. The controller, which regulates the pilot bus voltage, reflects these characteristics in the coordination of the two types of reactive power source. However, the continuous type source like generators is a more important source than the discrete type for an emergency state such as a voltage collapse, thereby requiring a more reactive power reserve of the continuous type to be utilized in the coordination in order to regulate the pilot bus voltage. Results show that the hybrid controller, when compared to conventional methods, has a considerable improvement in performance when adopted to control the pilot bus voltage of the Jeju island system.
