Flows of water in the environment (e.g. in a river or estuary) generally occur in complex conditions. This complexity can hinder a general understanding of flows and their related sedimentary processes, such as erosion and deposition. To gain insight in simplified, controlled conditions, hydraulic flumes are a popular type of laboratory research equipment. Linear flumes use pumps to recirculation water. This isn't appropriate for the investigation of cohesive sediments as pumps can break fragile cohesive sediment flocs. To overcome this limitation, the rotating annular flume (RAF) was developed. While not having pumps, a side-effect is that unwanted secondary circulations can occur. To counteract this, the top and bottom lid rotate in opposite directions. Furthermore, a larger flume is considered better as it has less curvature and secondary circulation. While only a few RAFs exist, they are important for theoretical research which often underlies numerical models. Many of the first-generation of RAFs have come into disrepair. As new measurement techniques and models become available, there is still a need to research cohesive sediment erosion and deposition in facilities such as a RAF. New RAFs also can have the advantage of being automatic instead of manually operated, thus improving data quality. To further advance our understanding of cohesive sediment erosion and deposition processes, a large, automatic RAF (1.72 m radius, 0.495 m channel depth, 0.275 m channel width) has been constructed at the Hydraulic Laboratory at Chungnam National University (CNU), Korea. The RAF has the ability to simulate both unidirectional (river) and bidirectional (tide) flows with supporting instrumentation for measuring turbulence, bed shear stress, suspended sediment concentraiton, floc size, bed level, and bed density. Here we present the current status and future prospect of the CNU RAF. In the future, calibration of the rotation rate with bed shear stress and experiments with unidirectional and bidirectional flow using cohesive kaolinite are expected. Preliminary results indicate that the CNU RAF is a valuable tool for fundamental cohesive sediment transport research.

In this study, a series of deposition tests have been performed using an annular flume in order to estimate depositional parameter of natural sediments. The sediment of Masan Port has been collected for deposition tests, and total 18 deposition tests have been carried out on different bed shear stress respectively but with the same initial concentration. As the results, the minimum bed shear stress ${\tau}_{bmin}$, standard deviation ${\sigma}1$ and time scale parameter $({\tau}_b^*-1)_{50}$ are found to be $0.10N/m^2$, 0.54 and 0.87 respectively. Through comparing with results from previous studies for other sediments, the results of this study are shown to be good enough to verify.
This study aims to investigate the settling velocity of aggregates of cohesive sediment (floc) and its relationship with sediment size, density and fractal dimension. A system of commercial camera and macro-lens is used for the experiment. Through the image-analysis technique, the image taken by the camera system is analyzed. For the experiment, kaolinite and a natural sediment sampled at Lake Apopka in Florida have been tested. From this study, it is known that kaolinite and Lake Apopka sediments show different behaviors mainly depending on the organic matter content. Samples of kaolinite with less organic contents show a more definite trend to follow a fractal theory and relatively strong relationships between the settling velocity, density, fractal dimension and floc size compared to the Lake Apopka sediments rich in organics.
In order to find out the condition of flow in sewer pipes, this study investigated the characteristics of tractive force of sewage flow estimated using actual measured values of water level, velocity, and flowrate in sewers located at uppermost portion in a treatment area during dry weather periods. When the scene of sewage flow was taken by CCTV after cohesive and non-cohesive solids (tofu and sand) were put on the sewer invert, it was found that the solids could be flushed without significant interruption. In sewer with slope of 0.00319, the frequency exceeding the minimum tractive force of sewage during a weekday was zero, while it was 10 per day with slope of 0.00603. During the week of the field observation, the event to exceed the minimum tractive force occurred once, suggesting that sewer odor would potentially increase. Maximum tractive force in sewer with steep slope was 2.9-3.1 N/㎡, but with gentle slope it decreased to 1.6-1.7N/㎡. It was also observed that the interval of time maintained below the criterion of minimum tractive force increased, during weekends compared to weekdays and for the sewage including non-cohesive particles which could enter combined sewers during a storm period. This study found that the sewer sediments formed by direct feces input into sewers, through sewer pipes which were designed meeting the standard sewer design criteria, could be flushed without staying as deposited solids state for a long time.
In this study, a series of deposition tests have been conducted on saltwater condition(salinity 32 %o) using an annular flume, in order to estimate depositional properties of kaolinite sediments and to analyze the effect of the initial concentration on them. Total 37 deposition tests have been carried out in three different initial concentrations (1000, 5000, 15000 ppm) with varying the bed shear stress. From these test results, minimum shear stress (or critical shear stress for deposition; ${\tau}_{bmin}$) and the deposition rate parameters (${\sigma}_1,\;({\tau}^*_b-1)_{50},\;{\sigma}_2,\;t_{50}$) for kaolinite sediments have been quantified, and the effects of the initial concentration and salinity on depositional properties of cohesive sediments have been analyzed qualitatively. As the results, ${\tau}_{bmin},\;{\sigma}_1\;and\;({\tau}^*_b-1)_{50}$ are found to be 0.147, 0.74 and $0.65N/m^2$ respectively. Through comparing with results from previous studies, the performance of this study and tests results are shown to be good enough to verify.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the settling property for fine-cohesive sediments in Keum Estuary and to evaluate the spatial variation by analyzing and comparing the local and seasonal variation of the settling properties in Keum Estuary with that of the settling properties in the other sites. After the spatial variation of physico-chemical properties such grain size distribution, the percentage of organic contents, mineralogical composition etc is investigated through experiments and analyses, interrelation between the physico-chemical properties and settling velocities and effect that the physico-chemical properties have on the quantitative variation of settling velocities were also analyzed in this study. Experimental results of settling tests shows that settling velocities of Keum Estuary mud vary in the range of two orders of magnitude (from 0.01 to 1mm/sec) over the corresponding concentration range of 0.1 to 80 g/L, and a feature of settling velocity profile is quite different in quantity as compared to those of previous studies with mud of other regions: Saemankuem, Tampa Bay, Sevem Estuary and lake Okeechobee. However, their local and seasonal variabilities within Keum Estuary appear to be insignificant.

This paper is to understand the settling properties of cohesive sediments under effects of ions in turbulent flow. The experiments were conducted using a miniature annular flume(mini flume) with a free water surface. Silica was used as sediment of experiment. The suspended concentrations were measured by using a CCD-Camera. Settling of silica($SiO_2$) was allowed to occur under various shear stresses in a concentration of 7g/L. At condition of pH 4.2 and high NaCl concentration, the floc size D of silica was larger than D at condition of pH6.8 with the bed shear stress increasing. The settling velocity $W_s$ of silica was higher at condition of 10g NaCl/L than $W_s$ at condition of pH4.2. Comparison of measured concentration-time curves and concentration-time curves calculated by this study showed similar tendency in flow under effects of ions.
This study investigated the flow characteristics in an annular flume with a free water surface using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter(ADV) in the laboratory. The flow was driven by the rotation of the inner cylinder in a way designed not to interfere with flocculation of cohesive sediments. The effect of the inner cylinder for the longitudinal velocities showed highest near the moving boundary and decreased towards the outer wall. At the lower longitudinal velocity, there was a peak in turbulent kinetic energy near the bed, whereas it moved upward to with increasing of the velocity. The longitudinal velocities estimated using the power law were in good agreement with the measured values than the values predicted by the log-law with roughness lengths. The average friction velocities evaluated by Reynolds shear stress were smaller than the values calculated using the log-law and power law when increasing the longitudinal velocity.
