Background: This study investigated the effects of acupuncture at Sobu (HT8) and Haenggan (LR2) on scopolamine-induced, cognitively impaired rats. Methods: Scopolamine-treated Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups; normal, control, HT8, LR2, HT8 + LR2 and sham group. Cognitive impairment was induced by scopolamine, in control, and then in HT8, LR2, HT8 + LR2 and sham groups. Acupuncture treatment was performed at HT8, LR2, HT8 + LR2, and a random acupoint, respectively, every other day for 2 weeks. After each treatment, behavior change was observed and the rats were sacrificed. The change in brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activity was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction. Results: Latency time to target in Morris Water-Maze test for the HT8 + LR2 group showed a significant decrease compared with control (p<0.05). Target crossing times and time zone ratios in Morris Water-Maze test for HT8 + LR2 group showed a significant increase compared with control (p<0.01). In the Y-Maze test the HT8 + LR2 group showed a significant increase compared with control (p<0.05). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, in the HT8 + LR2 group, showed a significantly increased level compared with control (p<0.05). Neural activity of acetylcholine esterase in HT8 + LR2 group showed a significant decrease compared with the control group (p<0.01), choline acetyltransferase activity in the HT8 + LR2 group showed a significant increase compared with control (p<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture at HT8 + LR2 restored scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment, suggesting acupuncture could be an alternative to improve cognitive function.
Context : Oriental medicine deals with mind cardinally and effectiveness of CBT on weight control is well-known. but there is no well-structured psychotherapy for weight control like CBT in Oriental medicine so far. Therefore It is necessary to develop new cognitive program based on the theory of Oriental medical. Objective: This study examined whether Yangsung program based on new cognitive weight regulation model is effective on weight loss, self esteem and self control. Design and setting: 44 women were assigned randomly to 2 groups; experimental group(n=24) and control group(n=10). experimental group had 11 sessions consisted of cognitive therapy, meditation, general diet and exercise education. Control group had personal interview with general diet and exercise education and ear acupuncture once a week for two months. All subjects were weighed and evaluated with Rosenberg self esteem scale, and three factor eating questionnaires at the beginning of the program and at the end of the program. Result: Experimental group reported significant changes of weight, self esteem, restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger(p<0.01). Compared with control group, more significant(p<0.05) Weight reduction and self-esteem enhancement were reported in experimental group than control group. There is no significant difference between two groups in changes of restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger.

The pre-test ego integrity score was 41.39 in the experimental group and 39.55 in the control group. The post-test ego integrity score was 57.95 in the experimental group and 51.41 in the control group. The later ego integrity score was 55.88 in the experimental group and 42.15 in the control group. Cognitive function, depression, and ego integrity showed significant differences according to group (p<.05), time (p<.001), and interaction between group and time (p<.01). Conclusion: The digital group reminiscence program was found to be effective in improving cognitive function and ego integrity and reducing depression in elderly patients with mild dementia. Further research is needed to explore the effects of repetitive digital group recall programs based on the progress, course, age, and communication level of dementia.
Traffic management is a highly beneficial mechanism for satisfying quality-of-service requirements and overcoming the resource scarcity problems in networks. This paper introduces an optimal connection admission control mechanism to decrease the packet loss ratio and end-to-end delay in cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs). This mechanism admits data flows based on the value of information sent by the sensor nodes, the network state, and the estimated required resources of the data flows. The number of required channels of each data flow is estimated using a proposed formula that is inspired by a graph coloring approach. The proposed admission control mechanism is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process and a linear programming problem is derived to obtain the optimal admission control policy for obtaining the maximum reward. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism outperforms a recently proposed admission control mechanism in CRSNs.

In order for humans and robots to interact in daily life, robots need to understand human speech and link it to their actions. This paper proposes a hierarchical behavior model for robot action control using natural language commands. The model, which consists of episodes, primitive actions and atomic functions, uses a sentential cognitive system that includes multiple modules for perception, action, reasoning and memory. Human speech commands are translated to sentences with a natural language processor that are syntactically parsed. A semantic parsing procedure was applied to human speech by analyzing the verbs and phrases of the sentences and linking them to the cognitive information. The cognitive system performed according to the hierarchical behavior model, which consists of episodes, primitive actions and atomic functions, which are implemented in the system. In the experiments, a possible episode, "Water the pot," was tested and its feasibility was evaluated.

We propose a distributed medium access control protocol for cognitive radio networks to opportunistically utilize multiple channels. Under the proposed protocol, cognitive radio nodes forecast and rank channel availability observing primary users' activities on the channels for a period of time by time series analyzing using smoothing models for seasonal data by Winters' method. The proposed approach protects primary users, mitigates channel access delay, and increases network performance. We analyze the optimal time to sense channels to avoid conflict with the primary users. We simulate and compare the proposed protocol with the existing protocol. The results show that the proposed approach utilizes channels more efficiently.
Objectives : In order to explore effects of board-game therapy for cognitive rehabilitation in patients with schizophrenia, we investigated the change of executive cognitive function over a 2-month period of board-game therapy in patients with schizophrenia. Methods : Two groups of chronic schizophrenic inpatients were participated in this study. One group(n=21) were treated with board-game therapy for 2 months and the other control group(n=19) were not treated. For the evaluation of the executive cognitive function, a Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST) was administered before and after the introduction of the board-game therapy. PANSS score change was also evaluated. Result : At the beginning of this study, there was no significant difference in performance of cognitive function tests, demographical data or clinical severity between both patient groups. After 2 months of treatment with the board-game therapy, the board-game therapy group showed significant improvements of executive cognitive function without any significant change of their schizophrenic symptoms. On the contrary, there was no change in control group. Conclusion : This study showed that a board-game therapy is effective for the enhancement of executive cognitive function in patients with chronic schizophrenia. A board-game therapy could be introduced with ease into psychiatric fields, such as inpatients' or outpatients' clinic wards and day hospital. Our result indicates that the board-game therapy is a promising tool for the enhancement of cognitive function, especially executive cognitive function and helpful for cognitive rehabilitation for schizophrenic patients.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: It is known that the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the brain could regulate cognitive functions as well as blood pressure. Inhibition of RAS for the improvement of cognitive function may be a new strategy, but studies so far have mostly reported on the effects of RAS inhibition by drugs, and there is no research on cognitive improvement through RAS inhibition of food ingredients. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of curcumin on blood pressure and cognitive function and its related mechanism in spontaneously hypertensive rat/Izm (SHR/Izm). MATERIALS/METHODS: Six-week-old SHR/Izm rats were divided into 5 groups: control group (CON), scopolamine group (SCO, drug for inducing cognitive deficits), positive control (SCO and tacrine [TAC]), curcumin 100 group (CUR100, SCO + Cur 100 mg/kg), and curcumin 200 group (CUR200, SCO + Cur 200 mg/kg). Changes in blood pressure, RAS, cholinergic system, and cognitive function were compared before and after cognitive impairment. RESULTS: The SCO group showed increased blood pressure and significantly reduced cognitive function based on the y-maze and passive avoidance test. Curcumin treatments significantly improved blood pressure and cognitive function compared with the SCO group. In both the CUR100 and CUR200 groups, the mRNA expressions of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin II receptor type1 (AT1), as well as the concentrations of angiotensin II (Ang II) in brain tissue were significantly decreased. The mRNA expression of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) and acetylcholine (ACh) content was significantly increased, compared with the SCO group. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of curcumin improved blood pressure and cognitive function in SCO-induced hypertensive mice, indicating that the cholinergic system was improved by suppressing RAS and AT1 receptor expression and increasing the mAChR expression.
Cognitive-behavioral approach can be clinically applied to coping with stress, because cognitions are playing a central mediating role in the occurances of stress and stress reactions. In other words, cognitive distortions can be associated with causing and/or maintaining psychopathology. The goal of cognitive-behavioral approach is to help the patients identify and alter cognitive distortions and maladaptive assumptions. This approach is aimed not at curing but rather at helping the patients to develop better coping strategies to deal with their life and work. The cognitive-behavioral techniques often used in this approach include problem solving, hypothesis-testing, self-monitoring, cognitive challenges, generating alternatives to automatic cognitive distortions, self-instruction, attribution and reattribution, and techniques to control or suppress thoughts. This approach is considered to be helpful for treatment and prevention of psychiatric disorders including psychosomatic disorders, in which stress can greatly affect their onset and course.

Cognitive radio has been recently proposed to dynamically access unused-spectrum. Since the spectrum availability for opportunistic access is determined by spectrum sensing, sensing is identified as one of the most crucial issues of cognitive radio networks. The PHY-layer sensing, as a part of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio, concerns the sensing mechanism to determine channel to be sensed and to access. One of the important issues in the PHY-layer sensing control is to find an available sensing period and trade-off between spectrum sensing and data transmission. In this paper, we show the relationship between spectrum sensing and data transmission according to the sensing period. We analyze and propose the new scheme to evaluate optimal sensing period.
