The Coanda effect is noticeable when a jet stream is applied tangential to a curved surface since then the jet stream remains attached to the surface beyond the point where flow separates otherwise and results in augmentation of circulation and lift. Numerous experimental and numerical studies have been performed in various fields of aerodynamics to exploit the Coanda effect and many of them found to be useful. It can be speculated that the Coanda effect may have practical application to the field of marine hydrodynamics as well since various control surfaces are being used to control behaviors of ships and offshore structures. In the present study, the Coanda effect has been applied to a horn type rudder and a series of numerical computations and model experiments are performed to find the practical applicability. The results indicate that the Coanda jet increases the lift coefficient of the rudder as much as 52% at the momentum coefficient $C_j$ = 0.1 and the rudder angle ${\alpha}=10^{\circ}$.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.

A multi-objective design exploration for a three-element airfoil consisted of a slat, a main wing, and a flap was carried out. The lift curve improvement is important to design high-lift system, thus design has to be performed with considered multi-angle. The objective functions considered here are to maximize the lift coefficient at landing and near stall conditions simultaneously. Kriging surrogate model which was constructed based on several sample designs is introduced. The solution space was explored based on the maximization of Expected Improvement (EI) value corresponding to objective functions on the Krigingmodels. The improvement of the model and the exploration of the optimum can be advanced at the same time by maximizing EI value. In this study, a total of 90 sample points are evaluated using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation(RANS) for the construction of the Kriging model. In order to obtain the information of the design space, two data mining techniques are applied to design result. One is functional Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) which can show quantitative information and the other is Self-Organizing Map(SOM) which can show qualitative information.
Laminar flow over a cube near a plane wall is numerically investigated in order to understand the effects of the cube-wall gap on the flow characteristics as well as the drag and lift coefficients. The main focus is placed on the three-dimensional vortical structures and its relation to the lift force applied on the cube. Numerical simulations are performed for the Reynolds numbers between 100 and 300, covering several different flow regimes. Without a wall nearby, the flow at Re=100 is planar symmetric with no vortical structure in the wake. However, when the wall is located close to the cube, a pair of streamwise vortices is induced behind the cube. At Re=250, the wall strengthens the existing streamwise vortices and elongates them in the streamwise direction. As a result, the lift coefficients at Re=100 and 250 increase as the cube-wall gap decreases. On the other hand, without a wall, vortex shedding takes place at Re=300 in the form of a hairpin vortex whose strength changes in time. The head of hairpin vortex or loop vortex, which is closely related to the lift force, seems to disappear due to the nearby wall. Therefore, unlike at Re=100 and 250, the lift coefficient tends to decrease more or less as the cube approaches the wall.
Aerodynamic characteristics of cross section shape is an important parameter for the wind response and structural stability of long span bridges. Numerical simulation methods have been introduced to estimate the aerodynamic characteristics for more detailed flow analysis and cost saving in place of existing wind tunnel experiment. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation and large eddy simulation( LES) technique were used to estimate lift, drag and moment coefficients of four cross sections. The Strouhal numbers were also determined by the fast Fourier transform of time series of the lift coefficient. The values from simulations and references were in a good agreement with average difference of 16.7% in coefficients and 8.5% in the Strouhal numbers. The success of the simulations is expected to attribute to the practical use of numerical estimation in construction engineering and wind load analysis.

The Coanda effect is the phenomenon of a fluid jet to stay attached to a curved surface; when a jet stream is applied tangentially to a convex surface, lift force is generated by increase in the circulation. The Coanda effect has great potential to be applied practically applied to marine hydrodynamics where various lifting surfaces are being widely used to control the behavior of ships and offshore structures. In the present study, Numerical simulations and corresponding experiments were performed to ascertain the applicability of the Coanda effect to a horn-type rudder. It was found that the Coanda jet increases the lift coefficient of the rudder by as much as 52% at a jet momentum coefficient of 0.1 and rudder angle of $10^{\circ}$.
Wind tunnel experiments were performed to study the wind loads on an inclined flat plate with and without a guide plate. Highly turbulent flow, which corresponded to free-stream turbulence intensity on the flat roof of low-rise buildings, was produced by a turbulence generation grid at the inlet of the test section. The test model could represent a typical solar collector panel of a solar water heater. There are up-stream movements of the separation bubble and side-edge vortices, more intense fluctuating pressure and a higher bending moment in the turbulent flow. A guide plate would result in higher lift coefficient, particularly with an increased projected area ratio of a guide plate to an inclined flat plate. The value of lift coefficient is considerably lower with increased free-stream turbulent intensity.

A new feedback control law is proposed and tested for suppressing the vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. The lift coefficient ( $C_{L}$) is employed as a feedback control signal and the control forcing is given by a rotational oscillation of the cylinder. The influence of the feedback transfer function on the $C_{L}$ reduction is examined. The main rationale of the feedback control is that a feedback control forcing is imposed at a phase which is located outside the range of lock-on. By applying the feedback control law, $C_{L}$ is reduced significantly. Furthermore, the reduction mechanism of $C_{L}$ is analyzed by showing the vortex formation modes with respect to the forcing phase.e.ase.e.
A simple Couette flow velocity profile with an appropriate correlation for the free terminal rise velocity of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid can produce reliable results for the trajectories of small spherical air bubbles in a low-viscosity liquid (water) provided the liquid remains under uniform shear flow. Comparison of the model adopted in this paper with published results has been accomplished. Based on this study it has also been found that the lift coefficient in water is higher than its typical value in a high-viscosity liquid and therefore a modified correlation for the lift coefficient in a uniform shear flow of water within the regime of the $E\ddot{o}tv\ddot{o}s$ number $0.305{\leq}Eo{\leq}1.22$ is also presented.

In this study, aerodynmaic characteristics of the notch-back and fast-backpassenger vehicle models(1/10~1/12 acale) attached with winglets were experimentally investigated in a low speed wind tunnel. For various positions(X/L). tilted angles($\beta$) of a winglet, the aerodynamic forces on the vehicle model and rear-surface pressures were measured at various flow speeds. Also a flow of model surface was visualized by tuft method. The experimental results showed that winglets effect aerodynamic characteristics of vehicle models. A maximum of 3% reduction in lift coefficient was achieved with winglets at $\alpha$=-30$^{\circ}$. A maximum of 10% reduction in drag coefficient was achieved for a model with winglets and a rear-spoiler.
