  • The polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) initiated by cobalt (II) nitrate in tetrahydrofuran (THF) has been studied. From the results of kinetic studies, the overall polymerization rate (Rp) could be expressed as following; $R_p=k\;[cobalt(Ⅱ)\;nitrate]^{0.5}\;[MMA]^{1.5}$ By considering the effects of chelating agent on the polymerization rate, it could be assumed that the monomer, MMA might form a coordination complex with cobalt(II) nitrate. In the presence of radical inhibitor hydroquinone, the inhibition time was observed. And the apparent overall activation energy was calculated to be 14.0 kcal/mole.

  • A tripledecker sandwichcomplex, bis(${\eta}^5$-cyclopentadienyl)-${\mu}$-(${\eta}^6$-2,3-dialkyl-1,4-dimethyl-1,4-dibora-2,5-cyclohexadiene)dicobalt 1 was synthesized as a starting material. By the reaction of compound 1 with the excess 3-hexyne two kinds of sandwichcomplexes, cyclopentadienyl(${\eta}^6$-2,3-dialkyl-1,4-dimethyl-1,4-dibora-2,5-cyclohexadiene)cobalt 2 and cyclopentadienyl(${\eta}^6$-hexaethyl benzene)cobalt 3 were separated. The complex 3 was decomposed during purifying at RT to give a cyclization product of 3-hexyne, hexaethyl benzene.

  • The Reaction of S-methyl-S-cysteine(L-Smc) with racemic $s-cis-[Co(demba)Cl_2]-1$ (Hydmedba = $NN'-dimethylethylenediamine-NN'-di-\alpha-butyric$, acid) yields ${\Delta}$-s-cis-[Co(dmedba)(L-Smc)] 2 with N, O-chelation. Oxidation of sulfur of 2 with $H_2O_2$ in a 1 : 1 mole ratio gives ${\Delta}$-s-cis[Co(dmedba)(L-S(O)mc)] 3 having an uncoordinated sulfenate group. Oxidation of sulfur of L-Sm with $H_2O_2in$ a 1: 1 mole ratio produces S-methyl-L-cysteinesulfenate (L-S(O)me) 5. Direct reaction of 1 with 5 in basic medium gives an N.O-chelated ${\Delta}$s-cis[Co(dmedba)(L-S(O)mc)-N.O], which turmed out be same as obtained by oxidation of 2, while an N, S-chelated ${\Delta}$-s-cis-[Co(dmedba)(S-S(O)mc)-N,O] complex 4 is obtained in acidic medium from the reaction of 1 with 5. This is one of the rare $[$Co^{III}$(N_2O_2-type$ ligand)(amino acid)] type complex preparations, where the reaction conditions determine which mode of N, O and N, S caelation modes is favored.

  • In nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities the removal of cobalt from radioactive liquid waste is needed to reduce the radioactivity concentration in effluents. In liquid wastes containing strong organic complexing agents such as EDTA cobalt removal can be problematic due to the high stability of the Co-EDTA complex. In this study, the removal of cobalt from NaNO3 solutions using antimony oxide (Sb2O3) synthesized from potassium hexahydroxoantimonate was investigated in the absence and presence of EDTA. The uptake studies on the ion exchange material were conducted both in the dark (absence of UV-light) and under UV-C irradiation. Ca2+ or Ni2+ were included in the experiments as competing cations to test the selectivity of the ion exchanger. Results show that UV-C irradiation noticeably enhances the cobalt sorption efficiency on the antimony oxide. It was shown that nickel decreased the sorption of cobalt to a higher extent than calcium. Finally, the sorption data collected for Co2+ on antimony oxide was modeled using six different isotherm models. The Sips model was found to be the most suitable model to describe the sorption process. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model was further used to calculate the adsorption energy, which was found to be 6.2 kJ mol-1.

  • Tetradentate Schiff base cobalt(II) complex; Co(SND) and Co(SOPD) were synthesized, and these complexes were allowed to react with dry oxygen to form oxygen adducts cobalt(III) complexes such as $[Co(SND)(Py)]_2O_2$ and $[Co(SOPD)(Py)]_2O_2$ in pyridine. These complexes have been identified by IR specta, T.G.A., magnetic susceptibilities measurements and elemental analysis. It has been found that the oxygen adducts coblat(III) complexes have hexacoordinated octahedral configuration with tetradentate Schiff base cobalt(II), pyridine and oxygen, and the mole ratio of oxygen to cobalt(II) complexes are 1;2. The redox reaction processes of $Co(SND)(Py)_2$ and $Co(SOPD)(Py)_2$ complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP pyridine. The result of redox reaction processes of Co(III)/Co(II) and Co(II)/Co(I) for $Co(SND)(Py)_2$ and $Co(SOPD)(Py)_2$ complexes are reversible or quasi reversible process but oxygen adducts complexes are irreversible processes. Redox process for oxygen of oxygen adducts complexes was quasi reversible and redox range of potential was $E_{pc}\;=\;-0.96{\sim}-1.03V$ and $E_{pa}\;=\;-0.78{\sim}-0.80V.$

  • In order to predict the dynamic behaviors of uranium and cobalt in a fixed bed at various influent pH values of liquid waste, the adsorption system is regarded as a multi-component adsorption between each ionic species in the solution. Langmuir isotherm parameters of each species were extracted by incorporating equilibrium data with the solution chemistry of the uranium and cobalt using IAST. Prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental data, except for a high concentration and pH. Although there was some limitations in predicting the cobalt adsorption, this method may be useful in analyzing a complex adsorption system where various kinds of ionic species exist in a solution.

  • Cobalt oxygen carrier complex N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalycylideneiminato)cobalt(II), Co(3MeOsalen) was prepared at $25{\circ}C$. UV and visible absorption spectra of the complex and hydrazobenzene were studied in non-aqueous solvent methanol in the range of wavelength 200-600 nm. The oxidation of hydrazobenzene by oxygen in non-aqueous solvent is catalysed by Co(3MeOsalen). In the presence of triphenylphosphine($PPh_3$), the rate decreases in methanol. This is presumably attributable to the coordination of $PPh_3$ to the Co(3MeOsalen), resulting in the catallytically inactive compound. The initial rates of the oxidation of hydrazobenzene with the ligand triphenylphosphine were measured by the theoretical values of the rates, Rate=$k_1+k_2K_1[P]/1+K_1[P]+K_1K_2[P]^2$. This fact would be a poorer σ-donor ligand than methanol.
