MOF-Derived FeCo-Based Layered Double Hydroxides for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

  • Exploring earth-abundant, highly effective and stable electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting is urgent and essential to the development of hydrogen (H2) energy technology. Iron-cobalt layered double hydroxide (FeCo-LDH) has been widely used as an electrocatalystfor OER due to its facile synthesis, tunable components, and low cost. However, LDH synthesized by the traditional hydrothermal method tends to easily agglomerate, resulting in an unstable structure that can change or dissolve in an alkaline solution. Therefore, studying the real active phase is highly significant in the design of electrochemical electrode materials. Here, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as template precursors to derive FeCo-LDH from different iron sources. Iron salts with different anions have a significant impact on the morphology and charge transfer properties of the resulting materials. FeCo-LDH synthesized from iron sulfate solution (FeCo-LDH-SO4) exhibits a hybrid structure of nanosheets and nanowires, quite different from other electrocatalysts that were synthesized from iron chloride and iron nitrate solutions. The final FeCo-LDH-SO4 had an overpotential of 247 mV with a low Tafel-slope of 60.6 mV dec-1 at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and delivered a long-term stability of 40 h for the OER. This work provides an innovative and feasible strategy to construct efficient electrocatalysts.

Expression, Purification, Crystallization and Preliminary X-Ray Crystallographic Analysis of CnrX from Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34

  • The nickel and cobalt resistance of Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 is mediated by the CnrCBA efflux pump encoded by the cnrYHXCBAT metal resistance determinant. The products of the three genes cnrYXH transcriptionally regulate expression of cnr. CnrY and CnrX are membrane-bound proteins, probably functioning as anti-sigma factors, whereas CnrH is a cnr-specific extracytoplasmic functions (ECF) sigma factor. The periplasmic domain of CnrX (residues 29-148) was cloned as a N-terminal His-tagged protein, expressed in Escherichia coli, and purified using affinity chromatography and gel filtration. The molecular mass was estimated to be about 13.6kDa by size exclusion chromatography, corresponding to a monomer. The tetragonal bipyramid crystals were obtained by mixing an equal volume of protein in 50mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.5, 1% glycerol, 100mM NaCl, 1mM DTT, and the reservoir solution of 15% w/v PEG 2000, 100mM lithium chloride at 277K in 2-4 days using hanging drop vapor diffusion. The protein concentration was 24mg/ml. The crystal that diffracted to $2.42{\AA}$ resolution belongs to space group $P4_1\;or\;P4_3$ with unit cell parameters of $a=b=32.14{\AA},\;c=195.31{\AA},\;{\alpha}={\beta}={\gamma}=90^{\circ}$, with one molecule of CnrX in the asymmetric unit.

Predictive value of cobalt chloride solution for hypohidrosis with topiramate (약물 유발 소한증에서 cobalt chloride solution의 임상적 유용성)

  • Purpose : The aims of this study were to verify the incidence of hypohidrosis and to determine the predictive value of noninvasive indicator test ($Neurocheck^{TM}$) for sweating after administration of topiramate in newly diagnosed pediatric epileptic patients. Methods : A total of 46 epileptic patients (22 boys; 24 girls) on topiramate treatment were evaluated in this study at the Department of Pediatrics, Chonbuk National University Hospital, from October 2004 to July 2005. We measured sweating functions using a noninvasive sweating test ($Neurocheck^{TM}$) before topiramate medication, and after 3 months when topiramate reached its target dosage. We performed a direct questionnaire survey for the hypohidrosis related symptoms during topiramate treatment. Results : The mean age was $7.8{\pm}3.2year$. The mean dosage of topiramate was $4.5{\pm}0.8mg/kg/day$. Among the patients, there were 40 complex partial seizures, one simple partial seizure, two partial seizures with secondarily generalization, two generalized seizures, and one Lennox-Gastaut syndrome case. Of the 46 epileptic patients, 17 patients (37.0 percent) experienced hypohidrosis and hypohidrosis related symptoms, 12 (26.1 percent) had facial flushing, four (8.7 percent) had heat intolerance, one (2.2 percent) had lethargy, but no one had anhidrosis. Among the 17 patients, the mild group numbered 12 and the severe group totalled five. Hypohidrosis by $Neurocheck^{TM}$ was diagnosed in 16 patients. The overall measures of agreement between $Neurocheck^{TM}$ and the survey was 76.5 percent. The specificity of this test was 89.7 percent. Patients who showed a time delay after medication, especially over 3 minutes, were seen only in the severe group. Conclusion : $Neurocheck^{TM}$ could be clinically useful to detect and predict topiramate induced hypohidrosis in pediatric epileptic patients. We recommend that patients who show a delay over 3 minutes in $Neurocheck^{TM}$ test after topiramate initiation should be monitored for hypohydrosis.

Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Zn1-xCoxO Thin Films Grown by Sol-Gel Process (Sol-Gel 법으로 제작한 Zn1-xCoxO 박박의 미세조직 및 자기적 특성)

  • Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O (x = 0.05 - 0.20) films were grown on Coming 7059 glass by sol-gel process. A homogeneous and stable Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O sol was prepared by dissolving zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(CH$_{3}$COO)$_{2}$$\cdot$2H$_{2}$O), cobalt acetate tetrahydrate ((CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$$\cdot$CHOH) and aluminium chloride hexahydrate (AlCl$_{3}$ $\cdot$ 6H$_{2}$O) as solute in solution of isopropanol ((CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$$\cdot$CHOH) and monoethanolamine (MEA:H$_{2}$NCH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$OH). The films grown by spin coating method were postheated in air at 650°C for 1 h and annealed in the condition of vacuum (5 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ Torr) at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and investigated the nature of c-axis preferred orientation and physical properties with different Co concentrations. Znl_xCOxO thin films with different Co concentrations were well oriented along the c-axis, but especially a highly c-axis oriented Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin film was grown at 10 at$\%$ Co concentration. The transmittance spectra showed that Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films occur typical d-d transitions and sp-d exchange interaction became activated with increasing Co concentration. The electrical resistivity of the films at 10 at$\%$ Co had the lowest value due to the highest c-axis orientation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and alternating gradient magnetometer analyses indicated that no Co metal cluster was formed, and the ferromagnetic properties appeared, respectively. The characteristics of the electrical resistivity and room temperature ferromagnetism of Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films suggested the possibility for the application to dilute magnetic semiconductors.

Solvent Extraction Separation of Co(II) and Ni(II) from Weak Hydrochloric Acid Solution with Ionic Liquids Synthesized from Organophosphorus Acids (유기인산계 추출제로 합성한 이온성액체에 의한 묽은 염산용액에서 코발트(II)와 니켈(II)의 추출분리)

  • In order to investigate the separation of Co(II) and Ni(II) by ionic liquids from weak hydrochloric acid solutions, extraction experiments were performed by changing the type and concentration of ionic liquids and the initial pH of the aqueous phase. Two kinds of ionic liquids based on Aliquat 336 were employed in this work; one was synthesized by reacting organophosphorus acids(D2EHPA, PC88A, Cyanex 272, Cyanex 301) with Aliquat 336 and the other was prepared by exchanging the chloride ion of Aliquat 336 with SCN-. The three types of ionic liquids (ALi-D2, ALi-PC, and ALi-CY272) showed better extraction of Co(II) than Ni(II), and the equilibrium pH was higher than the initial pH. In the case of ALi-CY301, the selectivity of Co(II) and Ni(II) depended on the extraction conditions. In addition, the effect of the addition of TBP to the ionic liquid on the extraction of two metals was also investigated. Employment of ALi-SCN as an extractant resulted in selective extraction of Co(II) and complete separation of the two metal ions was possible.
