  • Adhesion between rubber compound and copper-film-coated steel plate (abbreviated hereafter as copper film plate) with different thicknesses of copper film was investigated. Two different methods were employed for the preparation of the copper film plates: a substitution plating of preelectroplated zinc with copper ion and a vacuum sputtering of copper on steel plate. Adhesion strength of the copper film plates with rubber compounds was largely dependent upon the thickness of copper film, regardless of their preparation methods. The copper film plates with thinner thickness than 75 nm showed high adhesion comparable to brass, while those with thicker copper film showed poor adhesion due to excessive growth of copper sulfide at adhesion interface.

  • The specimen for laser hardening have been carried out using SM45C which is coated with black paint or graphite for better absorption. Segmented mirror was used in order to produce a square beam ($10{\times}10mm$) at the surface with a homegeneous intensity distribution across the beam. $CO_2$-Laser power was changed from 2kW to 4kW and transfer velocity was varied from 0.1m/min to 2.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth of SM45C steel are 790Hv and 1.5mm by laser hardening. When the surface of specimens was melted during laser hardening. the surface hardness of SM45C steel was decreased. The surface hardness of 2 layer coated specimen(black paint: $15.4{\mu}m$, graphite coating: $9.5{\mu}m$) was increased than that of 1 layer coated specimen. It is desirable to prepare 2 or more coating layer on the steel surface in order to sufficient case depth and hardness in laser hardening. The graphite coating on the specimen surface was obtained more uniform temperature distribution than black paint coating in laser hardening process.

  • The stainless steel mesh coated with poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel was fabricated and applied for the separation of water and oil. The stainless steel mesh was immersed in aqueous poly (acrylic acid) solution, and then irradiated by radiation to introduce poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel on the surface of mesh by crosslinking. It was possible to separate oil and water from mixtures of oil/water effectively using the hydrogel-coated mesh. The effect of irradiation dose, coating thickness, size of mesh on the separation efficiency was examined.

  • As the supply of eco-friendly vehicles increases, the application rate of hot stamping components is rising to reduce vehicle weight and improve safety. Although Al-Si coated steel sheets are commonly used in hot stamping processes, their manufacturing costs are elevated due to process patents and royalties. Various hot stamping studies have been conducted to reduce these production costs. In this study, we derived a process control method for suppressing the oxide layer of hot stamping parts using uncoated boron steel sheets. Firstly, hat-shaped parts were hot stamped under atmospheric conditions to analyze the tendency of oxide layer formation by location. Then, the Gleeble system was used to observe oxide layer formation based on oxygen content under various atmospheric conditions. Finally, the oxide layer thickness was quantitatively measured using SEM images.

  • Steels have excellent mechanical properties and weldability. They are also economically producible. Thus, they are widely applied in various industries. However, they have a disadvantage in that rust can occur after a certain period of time. To compensate for this, Zn, which has excellent sacrificial corrosion resistance, can be coated on steels. With global zinc consumption increasing at the current rate, depletion is expected in the near future. Recently, POSCO has developed innovative Al-Zn-Si alloy coated steel sheets with better corrosion resistance than Zn coating. In this study, corrosion resistance, weldability, friction characteristics, and so on were evaluated compared to GI steel sheets to evaluate their applicability to automotive steel sheets. It showed excellent corrosion resistance even at a lower coating weight compared to GI steel sheet. It was also excellent in terms of galling and welding LME. Its spot welding life, electrodeposition coating, and bendability were equally excellent. This is presumed to be related to the formation of the Al-Zn-Si alloy phase at the interface of the coating layer.

  • In this study, fundamental experiment was conducted with various strength of UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) by $CO_2$ laser. And then, butt and lap joint laser welding with boron alloyed steel and Al-Si coated boron alloy steel have been done by changing laser beam feature, existence of gap and existence of coating layer to know welding characteristics of those materials. As a result, in case of fundamental experiment with various strength steel, hardening was found in the weld metal of all tested materials and softening was found at the heat affected zone of SGAFC 1180. In case of laser butt welding of UHSS, mechanical properties was improved by using small laser beam diameter and Al-Si coating layer caused fracture of weld metal. In case of laser lap welding of UHSS, Al-Si coating layer resulted in formation of intermetallic compound at the fusion boundary where fracture occurred. Al-Si coating layer caused lowering mechanical properties of weld metal.

  • Hot-dipped Al-Mg-Si coatings to alternate Zn and Zn alloy coatings for steel were examined on metallographic structure, corrosion resistance, sacrificial ability, formation and growth of inter-metallic compounds, and mechanical properties. Near the eutectic composition of quasi-binary system of Al-$Mg_2Si$, very fine eutectic structure of ${\alpha}$-Al and $Mg_2Si$ was obtained and it showed excellent corrosion resistivity and sacrificial ability for a steel in sodium chloride solutions. Formation and growth of Al-Fe inter-metallic compounds at the interface of substrate steel and coated layer was suppressed by addition of Si. The inter-metallic compounds layer was usually brittle, however, the coating layer did not peel off as long as the thickness of the inter-metallic compounds layer was small enough. During sacrificial protection of a steel, amount of hydrogen into the steel was more than ten times smaller than that of Zn coated steel, suggesting to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Al-Mg-Si coating is expected to apply for several kinds of high strength steels.

  • PosMAC® is a brand of Zn-Mg-Al hot-dip coated steel sheet developed by POSCO. PosMAC® can form dense surface oxides in corrosive environments, providing advanced corrosion resistance compared to traditional Zn coatings such as GI and GA. PosMAC® 3.0 is available for construction and solar energy systems in severe outdoor environments. PosMAC®1.5 has better surface quality. It is suitable for automotive and home appliances. Compared to GI and GA, PosMAC® shows significantly less weight reduction due to corrosion, even with a lower coating thickness. Thin coating of PosMAC® provides advanced quality and productivity in arc welding applications due to its less generation of Zn fume and spatters. In repeated friction tests, PosMAC® showed lower surface friction coefficient than conventional coatings such as GA, GI, and lubricant film coated GA. Industrial demand for PosMAC® steel is expected to increase in the near future due to benefits of anti-corrosion and robust application performance of PosMAC® steel.

  • Continuous wave CO$_{2}$laser beam welding and formability of zinc coated steel shets were investigated. First, optimal welding condition could be obtained in but welding by using the data for heat input and welding velocity. The highest value of Erichsen test is 79.3% compare to that of base matel. Secondly, Formability of laser welds was investigated by using ball punch tester. Finally, the forming results of butt-welded sheets showed that the joing design was important to apply the laser welded blank in the automotive production.
